I got a lot of stick from West Ham fans after the 4-0 defeat earlier in the season, mainly because I predicted a victory but also because it was a great result for them and they were enjoying the moment - probably thinking that it wouldn't last forever. That was when I had what little belief or maybe we should call it hope, I had left in David O'Leary and his strongest side.
This Saturday is going to be quite different. I have no confidence in David O'Leary but every confidence in the players. West Ham are looking like they could have had their fun and are now starting to go backwards - they have only one point from a possible 15 in the Premiership whereas Villa have 8 from a possible 15 (not the bet form but much better than the Hammers). If we win on Saturday we'll go ahead of West Ham and they could drop into the bottom half - this is an important match for Aston Villa and I know that the players know this. Liam Ridgewell hasn't played the last two games despite being fit so it goes a long way to suggesting that David O'Leary doesn't see him in his plans or he doesn't think he's ready otherwise he wouldn't be playing a fullback in his position. It would be nice to see Ridgewell play especially as we've just paid out ?350,000 for him because he has being playing and because that money went to West Ham. Mellberg and Milner have both commented on needing a result and one headline even uses the word 'revenge'. My heart says Villa victory but my head says draw and I don't know which one to follow this morning so I'm going with my heart and a 1-0. West Ham will stay up this season, they deserve to but I can see them starting to decline. Next season will be different and they should starting spending some of that money they must have in the bank and we could see a very different team next year.
