Reality check Aston Villa

Many question why I don't think David O'Leary is a good manager and I use this website to try and answer as many people as possible but occasionally it needs to be re-answered because some still don't get it.

Ask most Leeds fans and they'll tell you exactly what I'm going to tell you now. He is tactically inept and although he played football when he was younger he doesn't know much about management - even George Graham said he wasn't ready.

He talks a great game to the TV for a season or two then you figure out it's all blarney. He does very little of that talking to the players on how to develop individual games but more importantly how to play as a team - it seems to be kick the ball long as often as possible and hope a chance is created.

Aston Villa have lost as many matches as they have won under David O'Leary and this season we have lost nearly twice as many as we have won - surely these two statistics should ring a few alarm bells?

In his first full season as a football manager he finished 3rd. His his next he finished 4th. In his third he finished 5th. When he joined Villa he took a team capable of finishing 6th to 6th. Then last year he finished 10th.

Notice a trend? This year I predict he will finish lower than 10th because that is what David O'Leary does.

He had a great Leeds team, developed by George Graham and Howard Wilkinson and he destroyed it. Players wouldn't talk to him - hell some of those players won't even play for him again despite Leeds accepting offers from Aston Villa.

Ultimately I don't care who is managing Aston Villa but I do care about the football that Aston Villa play. Good football leads to results which in turn brings success - ask Kevin MacDonald or Tony McAndrew!

Aston Villa run around a lot - we've all seen this and we've all been told from David O'Leary that they run around a lot and effort can not be faulted but that is mainly down to having to run around a lot. If you kick the ball 40 yards to nobody you have to run and there is even more running to get the ball back. Lot's of running around doesn't make good football - only tired players and when you don't sub them you're fighting a losing battle.

Control, passing, creating space, not diving in and losing your man or giving away a free kick and possibly most importantly possession are vital if you want to win games.

Aston Villa do none of these things well and for this one man has to take responsibility. He's had long enough to get the basics right.

He's spent enough money and brought in an entirely new team while throwing away some great potential.

It's the football that bothers me. At Leeds it got worse and it has gotten worse at Villa.

One draw at Newcastle isn't going to make me change my mind. The only thing that could do that is if I saw good football and five on the bounce victories - but that's something not even David O'Leary could talk his way into.

One thing is for sure and I'll bet my house on it; we'll win nothing under David O'Leary but with a different manager and the players we have success is a distinct possibility.

I want to see Aston Villa winning matches and I want success back at Villa Park. Under David O'Leary it will not happen.
