I'm convinced they've got a matrix of responses based on results so expect to see a few rare ones this week as we've not had back to back wins for a season.
Take today for example. We beat Charlton on Saturday, a team that was on a steeper decline than us prior to the match at Villa Park and all of a sudden Gavin 'Smiler' McCann is 'the man'.
He had a good game sitting in front of the back four - this does not make him the man.
The man is Milan Baros - he is the only Villa player to play like he had a real idea of what was going on around him every time I've seen him play this season - I'll give it until February before we've taken that from him or he has left in the January transfer window.
I must confess to not reading the article yet and I may get several emails in saying it was about something else but from experience it can really only be one of a few players or David O'Leary that is bigging Smiler up.
Roy Aitken does all the post match interviews now because David O'Leary has had a cold for the past two weekends but he loves talking to the two Villa Park journalists during the week so my money would be on him.
Smiler is a decent player but Aston Villa need and deserve better than a player that spends most of the time on his arse from either tackling or failing to tackle a player.
Gavin McCann is a workhorse and that is possibly why we find ourselves in a workhorse position - apologies if this shatters a few illusions a few of you had about Gavin McCann.
The Premiership isn't about crunching tackles anymore it's about staying on your feet and tracking back with the man and although he is trying to do it he's not very good at it and reverts to form.
We need a creative player in the middle of the park to play alongside our very own Frank Lampard.
If anyone disagrees with that I'd really like to hear your views. Email me at damian@astonvilla.biz.
