No match report, just the result. A Kevin Phillips goal in the 22nd minute was all that separated these teams as Aston Villa put good the defeat from last year's competition.

No prizes for guessing the game lacked passion and any real direction from David O'Leary's team or that James Milner was the man they over relied on and was man of the match in my opinion.

A good performance from Steven Davis yet again and a goal from Gareth Barry in the last minute of the game that was given offside.

A happy night for Gavin McCann fans also as he came through the 90 minutes and looked back to full fitness.

Attendance was poor, I've not seen the official figures yet but it was embarrassing for a Premiership team.

Onto Monday now and Manchester City. A must win game for Aston Villa and more importantly David O'Leary.

Let's just hope there are no messages tonight about the result from the manager even though it was the right one and the only thing that really matters.

We'll leave it on an interesting statistic; every time we've beaten Burnley in this competition we've ended up in the final. Let's hope it's a good omen.
