What is football all about?

David O'Leary said something recently that I've only just read and it has got me thinking about football and the recent talk about entertaining people.

He said on the official website "For me, in general, people are becoming too cautious. Yes it's a results industry. Yes you can get the sack by it - but you can be over cautious. You've got to entertain. It's an entertainment industry as well."

I might be criticised for this but football isn't about entertainment for me. I don't watch it to be entertained. I don't play it to entertain others. I watch and play football to win.

I don't think the sport of football is in the entertainment industry but I do think that everything around it is.

From match day hospitality to watching a match at the local pub.

Even how the match is broadcast these days is all about entertainment.

The most important thing for me is seeing Aston Villa win. I believe they will win more matches if they play a slower more controlled game which ultimately will make it more enjoyable for me to watch so to some extent it could be considered entertainment.

However if they win every game by hoofing the ball as they do now I won't complain as that is the ultimate desire.

If I want entertainment I'll go to the theatre, watch a movie or go to a concert - I wont be going to Villa Park and I've never thought of football in that way before.

So, just to clarify. Football isn't about entertaining it's about winning. Am I right or did something happen that I missed?
