You won't find it on the official website, but Luke Young is on his way to Villa for talks

It's official and it's on the Middlesbrough official website, a fee has been agreed for Luke Young and he's on his way to Villa for talks.

Two words for those of you using the official website for the latest news: don't bother.

You won't find anything about this until and if he has signed for us, probably with a standard heading like every other signing.

Luke Young is a decent attacking full-back, I just have reservations about his tackling and general defending. But he will get forward and will give 100% for the whole game.

If he signs we will no longer be the only professional club in the world without a recognised full-back. Okay, I can't say that's definitely true but it's highly likely.

As Damian said this morning, it was rumoured we'd had bids accepted for Young and Shorey and now one has come to fruition.

We should know about Shorey before the weekend so it could be a good few days leading up to our UEFA Cup match in Iceland.

Luke, thats bit harsh - the club site is first with all the exclusive news

Okay, it's not harsh .. it is crap

I'd also hope for Shorey to be done today also and announced today or tomorrow

Like I said in the other article, if we're paying £5m that's a fair bit more than he's worth. I think the fact we're so desperate though it doesn't really matter.

its gonna take my a while to take to luke young, for the same reason as it will to sidwell, both players could have signed for us last season, both chose not to over better wages. now they sign for us and cost us an extra £7.5million.

he is a 29 year old right back we are spending £5 mill on...

you lot just want us to sign players... no full-back unless exceptional should be bought if they are 29 years old and for £5 mill...

just like no trashy striker should be bought for £4 mill leaving the fans of his old club laughing to death

It seems like a quick fix, he'll be ok for a few seasons, by which time we will need another first choice right back.

yes it is a fix, but hardly quick we have been waiting 2 years. the RB MoN wants is clearly unavailable this year, so we'll wait till next year for him. OOORrrr MoN will sign another RB aswell, and Young and Mr X (as i shall call him) will fight for the first choice right back slot

luke young as a back up ok good deal, if he's first choice wouldnt be to happy, not a bad defender but i think we need someone comfortable with a ball, and hes not that clever. hopefully martin has a younger more attacking rb lined up hoyte would be good. shorey would be a decent signing, when ive seen him for england looks quite comfortable on the ball good left foot and sounds like a good price! who works out these prices??

panchovilla
panchovilla Wrote: | 16.03BST | Aug 7, 2008

Shorey and Young good signings. Experience and a bit of quality - with Davies back alongside Laursen that is a seriously good defence. MON is delivering on his promises, we scored a lot last season but let too many goals in, tighten the defence and we will really challenge.

SwissVillan
SwissVillan Wrote: | 16.04BST | Aug 7, 2008

The one thing that puzzles me in all this is if MON really wanted Young why didn't he go out and get him this time last year? We could have picked him up from Charlton for £2.5m and it might have been the difference between 6th and 5th.

We still need another RB so I'm guessing we're going to go after a younger player, such as Hoyte, as cover.

Luke Young - decent player, 2 or 3 seasons in him, but is he THAT much better than Aaron Hughes???

Hairy H
Hairy H Wrote: | 16.11BST | Aug 7, 2008

If anyone comes on here saying MON takes his time and earmarks the right player etc... then I fear for their sanity, how long have we been waiting for a RB the quality of L young? I mean he is ok but not worth waiting a couple of seasons for, a bit dissapointing after being linked with so many exciting RB's

Nik
Nik Wrote: | 16.15BST | Aug 7, 2008

SwissVillan - did you ever watch Aaron Hughes. I saw him week in week out, he was poor at best. Beaten by every winger who visited VP time after time and was were most of the goals conceded came from. Luke Young, along with Downing, was Boro's most consistent performer and even looked good in a relegated charlton side. don't forget this is the guy who was Englands Number 2 right back until very recently. If MoN can work his powers on this guy who knows, he is 29 yes but he has the potential to be an extremely solid right back for us!

keef
keef Wrote: | 16.15BST | Aug 7, 2008

Can only assume that the RB that MON has been waiting to sign still isn't available. So he got short term replacement until he can get his first choice.

panchovilla
panchovilla Wrote: | 16.18BST | Aug 7, 2008

It's clear that Luke Young isn't MONs first choice. Last Season he was linked repeatedly with a couple of foreign names. It's probably the case this season that Young isn't his first choice hence the delays. I'm guessing he sees him and Shorey as building the overall quality of the team at the right price. His sights are probably set on some even better quality when we are establishing ourselves as a consistent top 6 club.

im a boro fan and Im very suprised to hear southgate has accepted a bid for young so close to the season opener. However i for one totally trust southgates ever increasing shrewdness in the transfer market. I know that williams/mcmahon etc have been impressing in pre-saeson so i presume that has had an influence on his decision. Good buy for vila, solid enough right back, good luck for the new season! got to ask the question if mon is willing and happy to sign young now why the heck did we go a whole season last year without a recognised right back when young was available and would have clearly come to us!!
Bizarre!!!
Dont get me wrong i am pleased we are going to sign some full backs but to me this raises even more questions over MON. As he could have had young a year ago he must have been way down the pecking order in mon's mind so i can only assume he missed out on numerous right back targets. why? this only emphasises to me he doesnt have the ability to sign quality players or the players he wants!

Dave, a supposedly well-informed guide at Birmingham Art Gallery, told me today that Thierry Henry is about to sign. I'm dubious at best.

As to the people questioning the price of five million for a 29 year-old right-back, who gives a crap? Liverpool are having to pay eighteen million for a wantaway 29 year-old Villa midfielder. Which is the better piece of business? I know who'll be more committed to the long-term cause, and his initials certainly aren't GB.

We are a team who finnished in the top 6 and are plying our trade in europe this year.Young and shory are the type of player that should be warming our bench.People just seem to be happy that we are signing someone at last, and while players are needed, the quality we are signing is sub-standard.

We were linked with Young last summer, so i watched him after he went to Middlesborough because of this and i was very happy we didnt buy him.

Where the fuck are these players that are taking the club forward?? and how can buying a second-rate 29 year-old full back be part of a 5 year plan, that by the way is entering its third yeer.

I'm sick of us buying "100%" players. It just means they're shit but they'll run they're bollocks off.I was all for whole heartedly putting my faith in MON this transfer window because i fealt he would bring in quality. But it seems so clear to me now that he failed to bring in the men he wanted and now he's just bringing in desperately needed bodies to fill positions he should have solved a year ago.To me this is a far bigger waste of money than throwing a few extra pound to a club to make sure we land the right player(David Bentlley).

I don't understand why people are slating the signing of Young. He's a good right back. There have also been zero indications to suggest he will be the only right back we're in for, and even if he is first choice will still be a good player for us.

Did you guys who think we've waited 2 years for him stop to wonder whether those first choice targets just aren't available to us no matter what MON may have tried?
