If our club captain wants to behave like this then I think we should make him rot in the reserves for 2 years. He is under contract so he can't just decide to leave. The club must first accept an offer. Carrick and Hargreaves went for £20 million. Why should we accept any less? I thought Barry was more professional than this but clearly he is no better than the likes of Ronaldo. |

If this is actually quoted from Gareth Barry then firstly i'm shocked that he would come out with such a thing while under contract getting paid tens of thousands a week, while fans who get paid minimum wage have to save to go to matches, and quite obviously the underlying current of his tone is that he wants a pay-rise. Greedy f*ck. Secondly IF what he says is true, then Martin O'Neill has alot to answer for. I love MO'N but this isnt good enough, Barry has several points about calling him back if he says he is going to, atleast sharing some info about summer targets with the player but most of all i am royally p*ssed off about his Euro excursion. First off - whilst I believe that Barry has been a good servant to the club and always gave 100% - I am not one who thinks he is god and certainly believe that he can be replaced. In fact due to the iinflated price of british players - I believe the transfer fee that we will recieve will enable us to buy a vastly superior player - thats my opinion. The main point about his comments though is that it reflects terribly on MoN, Lerner, Villa's management and ambition. Before the summer - all comments from everyone at the club were 'number one priority is keeping barry.......we need lots of quality in the transfer market'. Now from Barrys comments - Villa have done absolutely nothing to keep him and couldn't tell the most infleuntial player at a club their transfer targets!! This is a massive summer for Villa and MoN is off at the european championships. He should not have a bloody minute to spare. If during next season we hear the 'small squad' excuse or the 'we are doing briallient CONSIDERING the players we have' argument - i will be physically sick. The squad size and squad quality are 1million percent the responsibility of MoN and Lerner and its probably the most important aspect of their job. All I ask is the club that I love for the first time in 25years, and with the best opportunity in that timeframe, to show some ambition. I hope that by the start or next season (three weeks away) things will have changed but right now it pains me to say it but all indications are that we accept mediocrity and are being led by media spindoctors whose words speak louder than their actions. |

Agree with the rest, if he wanted more money he wouldn't have promised half his testimonial to charity, he IS shifting the blame. He has 2 years left on his contract and where does he get off thinking he needs to be clued up on who the club are trying to get in? Who interviewed him and is he quoted on this? Barry is playing with fire if he has said this, not sure what Lerner and MON reaction will be but I would not expect either, especially Lerner to sit back and accept these type of comments. In the worlds of these sort of people comments can backfire on either the person who said it or the paper that have made it up. |

It's really disappointing to see GB turn to the press in this fashion. It doesn't really matter how many years of loyal service or how much respect he's shown the club upto now, it's ending his career at villa in this fashion that most people will remember when we talk about him in the future. I say let him go, but only for the price we want, or let him rot in the reserves also. I'm usually an optimistic fan, but I'm getting anxious. Here's my take on it. Gareth Barry is a decent. tidy midfielder- but is no world beater! I don't think much of his loyalty, Villa have been good to him and, on the other occasion when he was targeted by Prem rivals, again he said he'd like to leave. But more importantly, if what Barry says is true then MON and co really do have some questions to face. MON should not be p*ssing around on BBC when our squad is so, so desperately short of numbers and quality. With the exception of Young and Carew, MON has been a disgrace in the transfer market. Starting last season with no right back was a sackable offence in my opinion. And whilst our rivals keep making signings, he arses around on tv. I can't believe in the meeting with Barry- our captain- that he didnt even suggest some potential targets. Well, then again i can believe it because he probably doesn't have any because although he is a useful tactician I still think the guy is a total moron and my patience is really wearing thin. You've been at the club quite a long time Martin, its time to make some real progress. |

Well I agree that Barry is out of order but so is Martin O'Neill. He should make time for Barry so i am dissapointed in both. I think we should cash in on him now as I don't want any player at Villa if they aren't 100% commited. I think we should spend the money on Rafael van der Vaart. He is better than Barry and a similar type of player. I also think we should keep it english. I would go for Anton Ferdinand, Aaron Lennon, David Bentley and Peter Crouch. Villa have a very good reputation for having a young exciting english team and we should keep that going. UP THE VILLA!! |

Interestingly the same story is in the Mercury, when more than one paper has the story there is usually more truth to it. Gareth is forcing the issue as he is worried than Liverpool are stalling. Liverpool are being very clever, they have totally unsettled the player, we will have no choice but to sell him, and may be cut our losses. What we should focus on now is how we build for the future without both Garth and Olof. In these modern times you do not have to be a your desk to talk to players. He said he wanted to go so why would Villa try and offer him something. Poor old agent as well he showed that he doesn't have much of a business brain and will miss out on a lot of money. We all know that if a player wants a move, the player will go: the same applies to Arsenal with Adebayor and Wenger knows that. The "rot in the reserves" adagio is an old one and rarely happens, unless you are some low profile Championship player. MON may not be a pussy but he sure takes his time to do everything. I'd prefer him entirely focused on his job, given that the last 2 transfer windows have been a major anti-climax and we only get linked with other clubs' rejects or 18 year olds. |

I'm a window cleaner, we drove past barrys house on thursday as he lives in Ullenhall. There were numerous transporter lorries parked up on his drives, at first glance it looked like he was having things delivered, but when we drove past the second time, it was evident they weren't unloading but loading. This pretty much confirmed for me and my work mates that he was off. WOrst thing is, we had a mini discussion afterwards, none of us seemed all that bothered. Six months ago I'd have been irate, but I'm so far past caring now, that I can't wait to get shot of him. If someone who's supposed to be our leader and captain, wants out for a team that we'll probably be better than in the next few years then let him go. I'd be very suprised if he's a regular in the first team. Get whatever for him, make reo-coker the captain. Spend the money on someone, a great point above was sign diego, he'd cost 17-20 mil. If that's the case then I hope he becomes a bench warmer at Liverpool and we finish above them (which I strongly expect we will). I think MON viewed it as game over when he talked about it on MOD after a Euro game. He was clearly disappointed that he had been let down by Barry and who can blame him. Villa have made GB the player he is and MON has fine tuned GB into an England regular now he has managed to break into the ENGLAND PRIMA DONNAS SET Villa appear not to be the place to be seen so if he wants to go and hold hands with Steven Gerrard and sit on the bench next to that twat Rafa then let him go but not till we get £20m for him and if we dont get that sort of money would be great to see him see the rest of his contract out as a ball boy |

I have been reading all the commients others have been puting on this blog and while i agree that Barry is trying to force the issue and leave i still believe in some way that MON (God) as to have a good luck in the mirror. Why? well 1 when MON started he said he will geive everyone a chance and look to buy in January. 2 he did and brought in young and a couple others, he also said that we needed more small squad etd 3 season after summer nothing but said we needed players started season with no right back, he said dont worry wait until January i have plans he wanted quality not quanity, yet we got 1 player, who did not play. 4 new summer rumors gossip but yet zero, i dont mind him being on tv i think he talks with a clear understanding and he has a great sence of humor, yet we still have 0. i am worried really worried and this barry incident is as not helped, please martin or villa come out with a statement that will make a true villa fan understand what is going on this transfer gungle, we all understand it is difficult but we just dont see or here any news from the people that matters that is MON and Randy himself. |

He has been saying for weeks that he would discuss his future after his holiday which came after the trinidad game, that wasn't 7 weeks ago. was it? barry went to the notw and probably got paid for it nicely as well.
