It's up to you Mr O'Neill: Paul Robinson

Written by Damian

This rumour seems to be gathering pace and if reports are to be believed talks are planned for this week and I wouldn't be surprised if they were true.

We need a keeper and he needs a club. The top three plus Liverpool are sorted so we are the logical next step for him and let's not forget, he isn't actually as bad as a few mistakes make him out to be.

Also, if David James is anything to go by this lad has another ten season in him and if we use David James as the benchmark, this lad is only going to get better with age. To some extent, in goalkeeping parlance, he is still a prospect.

So, if the rumours are true and if he comes, I'd welcome him. He is vocal, or appears to be and you don't get to his level just with luck, you do need ability.

What do you think? Should Martin O'Neill bring Paul Robinson to the club? I think so, but it's just my opinion.

Definately has to get him, he's made a few mistakes but so had calamity and he's englands no.1 now.I really want him in nets, sidwell, bentley,a pacy right back, guzak or boruc, and a decent striker,I'd like gudjonsson or henry.Bring them in Messiah!!!!!!!!
Top 4 finish if we do even if whats his name leaves for the 2nd best team on merseyside.

Absolutely, 5mil would be good business for a keeper who is a decent. He's no world beater but i think he is up there as being one of the best in the country when he is confident. All keepers go through crisis of confidence, it's possible Cech may go through one soon.

He would be a very good signing. He's been rather unfairly treated considering the major mistake that gets replayed time and time again wasn't even his fault, it was just a bobble on the pitch. He's got something to prove, so he ticks the boxes, and has the ability to play for the top clubs. He's got ages left in the game, and European and international experience. For £5m, that'd be a steal.

I think that this transfer was on the cards as soon as he fell out with Ramos. Robbo had a poor season due to a rubbish defence. But with the keepers we have been linked with I think Robinson is a safe bet and for £5m is a steal. With a good defence in front of them he is a solid keeper

At least if Robbo does come I would welcome him and I could give him a shout getting the England number 1 shirt back.

Goalkeeping is all about confidence imo and Robbo certainly has had his destroyed since the last World Cup. However, if MoN can rebuild it for him and he has a good season with us then I dont see why he shouldn't be back in the England frame pretty soon. He could be the next David James (or even Robert Green) or the next Richard Wright - worth a punt tho'

Robinson is a class goalkeeper. anybody who has been watching premierleague football for the last few years will have seen that. Goal keepers always get stick if they make mistakes, then that stick lowers their confidance equaling more mistakes...All robbo needs is a fresh start, new team around him, new challenge and you will see the best of him again.
I also think he will jump at the chance for playing for villa, especialy with the chance to be watched by Capelo alot the time with all of our english talent in the team.

Get him MON!!!!!!

Robinson is a great goalie low on confidence. The messiah will fill the lad full of confidence and he will be back in the England team in no time.

Robinson has had a house in solihull for four years and i have a feeling he may be a villa fan..... who aint!

I was hoping the first signing would be announced today or friday (mon in austria/swiz tomorrow) but it looks like were a way off that so now im now resigned to the fact that we will have to wait til next week when the lads are back in training and the messiah is in his office on the blower!!!

Villan from Texas - how many games did Carson lose for us last season? What chances of Guzan, untried in the PL, losing us a few games next season. Robbo is quality, we need a couple of goalkeepers and Mon will give him all the confidence (and hopefully a diet not involving pies!!) he needs. Its also a cheap bet too. Robbo & Sidwell - good start! Confirmed by Friday i hope!

As for the bobble, has anyone asked Neville why he made a back pass aimed at the goal when he knew the state of the pitch??

re. Barry - I'm not discussing that anymore but I am saying Robinson is a fairly decent keeper and that we all have an opinion. None of us know for sure if he's good enough to get us top four (it is also about more than an individual player) but it's my opinion that him or Boruc could help us.

Darragh

I have to laugh at some people on here. They are arrogant enough to think that they know more about signing players than MON. Yes its very easy to turn around and say get Boruc for the nets, Miguel for right back etc. We can't spend a fortune in each position (we are not Chelsea). Ill put it to you like this, if we signed Robbo and used the extra money saved from signing a bigger goalie (Boruc/Carson etc) then used that to test blackburn for Bentley and ended up getting him, would you not be happy. MON has a plan and im sure he'll stick to it. Let him do his job and if we are seriously lacking come the start of the league then you can critisise. jeeeeesssss!

Your point seems to be that because he had a keeper last season who cost us points, we can afford a keeper this season who may cost us points. I thought we were trying to improve. And I never said that we should sign Carson. But even if we did sign him, he would inspure more confidence than Robinson. Carson was never as shocking for us last season as Robinson was when he played against us. Do you remember when he literally dropped a cross at his feet that allowed us to tap in?

My goodness. Let's throw Titus Bramble into the back line while we're at it.

Also, he could challenge Gabby's goal tally each season!

Everyone seems to think MON is a magician, but i believe this signing would be a huge mistake. There is a lot of keepers in the premierships better than him and a lot more internationally who Robinson couldn't lace up boots for. Why do Spurs want rid of him if he's any good? A good keeper should be priority number 1, and Robinson is not it
I hated him even when he was being a clown costing a team I don't like(Spurs) points as he was so clearly hopeless in goal, and always talked like a superstar

He reckons he's over it but, he trys too hard to not make a mistake and ends up dropping a clanger! He doesn't command his area with enough presence! He flaps at crosses or corners and he doesn't do particularily well in 1 on 1 situations!

not sure about robinson, cant see why we dont give taylor a chance with a good young number 2.and why do we insist on spurs rejects,is anyone concerned about a 3rd season without a RB.two players have caught MONS eye one is russian, but we cant afford him(and its not arshavin),and the other is croation i do believe.can we just sign 1 for the toto cup at least...
