Joao Pereira plays for Portuguese side Sporting Clube de Braga and you guessed it; he's a right back. We've now been linked to every right back in Portugal.
Rumours have it, with just over a month to our first competitive game, we're going to move on to Spain and then probably back to France again before possibly Italy.
I have no recollection of seeing this player this season and I did watch a few games from the Portuguese league, mostly because we've been banging the drum about two or three Portuguese defenders that we've heard whispers about.
There isn't even a photo on his Wikipedia page, but we are told he's 24 years old and played for Gil Vicente Futebol Clube and SL Benfica.
In other speculation, we're linked once again to James Milner. Now, it's not that AI don't think he's a good player, he's very okay, it's that I think it's about time we went for a player or two that isn't one of those we're going to say 'Martin O'Neill will get the best out of him'.
I know Martin O'Neill makes average players good and good players very good, but can't we go for the 'very good' players for a change and stop looking for the prospects?
Still, I can't see this happening. Ashley prefers the left, as does Milner from memory, so unless he was purchased to play on the right I can't see it happening and certainly not at the money Newcastle are suggesting.
The other speculation today is mostly that we're interested in David Bentley and that the other deal will go through very soon. I hope it does, because as it stands only 52.4% would welcome him at Villa Park next season and this figure will get smaller and smaller if the sale doesn't go through soon.
Anyway, that's it for the moment. Don't forget, you can order the new Aston Villa shirt from here and if you order it now, you get a free bag, wallet and right back in the post at the same time.
I must however, offer up a public warning, if you're thinking about ordering the shirt. The rumour doing the rounds is it's one of those tight fitting tops, much like Pompey had this season.
If you're built like a young Stallone, this won't be a problem for you, but if like me you're carrying a few extra winter pounds, then it might be a good idea to wait a few weeks until we're shown the first images for sure.
It's not that I don't like, it's that I'm fully aware I can't be wearing one of those without a good few weeks in the gym first and I'm not doing that, just to wear a shirt.

I'm glad it's not just me who thinks Milner is very average, and we could do better.
As far as I remember, Milner ususally played on the right
I think it would be a decent signing - add some balance to Ashley on the left - plus Bentley has come out and said he wants "top four". Given that Barry - our captain - is leaving us for the same reasons, I feel the chances of us getting players of any quality are now significantly undermined....
JG
he did play on the right for us, as well as the left, but like i said above, from memory i think he prefers the left and when you look at his profile on the newcastle web site, it does go some way to confirming that he prefers that
A very promising left sided midfielder cum winger(taken from that link that Damian gave)
Im sure that should be come, not cum(someone must have had sex on the brain when writing that!! Lol
I actually thoguht that when I read it .. but it does work:
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/cum
Im starting to have my doubts about Bentley - he clearly thinks he's the finished article and think he can make it a the top. While I think he is very good, i think he has a lot to learn. I don't like overly confident players.
Milner would be a decent signing, noting more than that.
As for the Joao Pereira guy, i dont know anything about him but any recognised right back would be welcome :)
lmao Damian!
you do make me chuckle :)
Well when Barry came out and said he wanted Villa to match his ambitions, Bentley was the kind of player he meant... So if Barry goes there is no chance Bentley will sign for us..! Also what player in the £15 mill bracket will come to us when they see we have sold our best player and captain..? I'm sure bentley would love to play with Barry, coker, and Young every week what a midfield that would be... But in reality Barry is off now, and wouldnt be suprised if Young does what bentley is doing now next summer.
I think we've been there and done it in terms of Milner, I think we're better than him now... If we're moving backwards then why dont we go the full hog and sign Nobby Solano now that he's been released by West Ham??
I'd like to see us get £18-£20m for Barry and with that money i'd pull out all the stops to get One from Quaresma, Diego, Van Der Vaart or Andrei Arshavin.
With the exception of Quaresma I would be confident of getting the rest individually for under £20m. They all have more ability than GB.
I want Reo-Coker to be captain next season, I think his best game for us was at Anfield when he wore the armband.. Barry cant be captain after asking to leave.
If MON makes average players good and good players very good, why hasnt he done that with Salifou,Knight and with Petrov
bentley wants to play champions league footbal, so i guess that rules him out comin to us. unless mon can give him the gift of the gab an persuade him to join us. the whole buyin british record should help our case, as he moaned about the lack of chances english youngsters get. how ironic wud it be if he joined the spanish armada or the russian revoloution?
Milner would probably do a decent job for Villa but as Damian says surely we can look for better.
Would he be an exciting signing - NO
Does he have as much potential as Lennon, SWP or Bentley - NO
Can he take us forward - NO
Can he help us challenge for the top 4 - NO
As for the portugeese rb - well anyone would be good at this stage. Wouldn't stump up for Bosingwa last year and now he plays for Chelsea. Miguel or Nelson would be my preferences - identify the top priority, find out how much their clubs want and pay it!
Do villa have any scouts that dont simply just watch match of the day and read Shoot magazine as MoN's signings suggest?
if the rumours are true...i'm definitely going to have to go retro this year to cater for my protruding abdomen
Get all 3. Bentley said he wants Champions League OR Europe. Man U don't want him, Chelsea the same especially with Scolari at the helm and Arsenal have a distinctly non British policy. Penniless Liverpool are his only option and personally can't see it happening. We will need both Milner and Bentley, both of which can switch wings as well as Young. If that happens, you might see Mr Barry have a change of heart. And i totally disagree, if he performs a u-turn i'll support him 100%. We'll have the finest midfield outside the top 2.
Im going to disagree with most here. I think Milner would be a great signing. I think he is better than average, but more importantly i think he could be very good in two or three years. It would be great to see Ashley and Milner swapping sides throughout matches and having a dinamic midfield.
Suprised to here you Damien go on about going and getting a great players instead of a promising players, as surely you can see O'Neil is building a great team for in two to three seasons. (Too play in the Champions League)
Why is there so much impatience. (we have done nothing since the European Cup and now are on the wright way)
I don't know why - just don't see Bentley in a Villa shirt next season.
Milner, though solid and hard working, would be a good squad player, but can't see him being a 25 games plus a season regular choice player - especially at the price the geordies are pouting.
Our priorities I believe are all defensive - we scored plenty of goals last season and even Barry excepted, I think we'll get plenty next.
Goalkeeper, 2 right backs, cental defender and cover for Bouma (no Barry anymore) are MON's first tasks surely.
Then I would tempt Wigan with an offer for Koumas - very underdated, always looks class, scores goals, good leader in midfield, good engine, MON type of player, would come to VP and none of the top 4 would compete for him
I think milner would be a quality signing, was by far our best player few seasons back and has been a very exciting player at newcastle. i thnk with him on right wing and young on left we would be veryy good in midfield. bently will not come to us, full stop, he wants champ league.
The Portuguese language version of João Pereira's wikipedia page has a little more on him:
-Born in a problem neighbourhood, chose football as a career to get him out.
-Normally a right back, but likes to get forward to help the attack using his pace.
-He is known for playing with his heart on his sleeve, 'fighting for the collective victory with all his might.' (!)
My Portuguese is getting rusty after time spent in Brazil a few years ago, but I hope that helps :)
Any right winger would be an improvement on last season, where we basically didn't have one.
So, the likes of Milner would move us forward - perhaps just not quite as far forward as we'd like. There's a lot of hype around Bentley - he's better than Milner, but not 'twice the price' better.
Coopsvilla nailed it. Have patience everyone. MON doesn't do his business in public if he can help it. We're building and in the middle of a five year plan. Milner works his guts out for 90mins every week. Remember why we liked him so much? He would make us even more threatening - he'd do as much as Bentley for us and would do it more often, more consistently and at less than half the price.
This year we'll be in a fight for fourth with Everton, Liverpool (spit) and Spurs or Man City. Gaz Baz might wish he'd stayed cos he'd be in Europe again the following year!
Let's tap up Gerard to join GazBaz at VP
Given that we need so many players, we can't afford to buy both van Der Vaart and Bentley. They would cost a combined 30 million. So I see two options: (1) Sidwell and Bentley or (2) van Der Vaart and Milner.
I choose option 2.
How about Anton Ferdinand? The "MON Effect" is bound to set him straight. He and Davies for the future would be solid as. Im excited about the possibility of Milner, but only because nothing else is happening........
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE SIGN SOME ONE (RIGHT BACK,CENTRE HALF,STRIKER,RIGHT MID,CENTRE MID,GOAL KEEPER,BALL BOY)MY EYES ARE BLEEDING FROM ALL THE CRAP IN THE PAPERS (BIRMINGHAM MAIL) :'(
shabba is completely correct!!! Quaresma, Deigo or Van Der Vaart r the perfect sollution!!! at last sumbody has agreed wiv what i say! legend m8 =)
I agree with Pete2222, Bentley is quoted as saying champions league OR europe. With MON's reputation of getting the best out of players and the fact Villa are moving in the right direction means we must have a chance if none of the top 4 make an offer. Arsenal won't buy him back, doubt Scolari even heard of him, Liverpool got no money and he wouldn't get into Man Utds team. Milner is a very good player and amuch better prospect than the older SWP or the inconsistant Lennon. Let's show some ambition -buy both & have proper competition for places!
same here jace the ace we need to sign somebody! just get bentley idont care anymore!
p.s. put CRACK at the end of your message if you like pizza!
I agree with the questioning by eoin1981 when he says about the scouts at Villa. I'm not impressed and don't see the fans getting value for money from them. I don't know who they're but I'd like them to prove me wrong.
Betley would be great for the Villa and even though he does think he's better than what he really is - He's got promise and I think this should be a main target.
I disagree with alot of you - Milner is a good player he's just been at a very poor team. If he did come though he would only be a squad member as Young is no1 all the way - If he did go down the other flank it could be interesting.
I know very little about this player from Portugal but will speak to some people on e-mail and find out soon.
Agree with KEEF as well - Go for both
Have we been linked with any Central Defenders? I like the thought of Laursen and Curtis which started to look good. Knight is a good squad player but that's it. So I still think we need one or two in that position as well.
My God.... Koumas, Anton Ferdinand..? The MON effect only goes so far.!!!
Leroy, Cookiemonster.. You should be ashamed.!
Milner could be a good player in a villa shirt,he played well when we had him on loan.
We need a right-back who can play right-back and wants to play right-back.How long has it been since we've had a player like that!?(who we have not loaned)But are we going to get a player like that in this window? Just wait and find out i say.
Lets hope soon!! 8)
Barry is going-we're only haggling over the price. Hope Carson features in the deal.
I would have Milner and Bentley. We were far too weak down the right side last season. Milner was a class act when Newcastle came visiting last season, in fact he was their only act- never let his head drop, laid on Owen's goal and looked dangerous [yes, I know, on the left wing]all game. Bentley wasn't so convincing for Rovers when they were here but Capello obviously rates him so he must have something and he's looked OK on MOTD most times.
It'll be interesting to see if MONs done anything with Salifou and Routledge.
I agree though that full backs are a priority.
Barry was a left back/centre vback before MON came along and made him into a midfield general.
No reason why he can't do that again. Milner is a possibility.
He could replace Barry in the England midfield - sweet irony eh!
It would be good to also sign Lennon and Huddlestone. Bentley is a big head like Pennant. Derbyshire would be a better signing from Blackburn.
I'd like to also see Delfueneso, Bannan, Clarke and Forester given a chance in pre-season.
You never know - we may have 2/3 or even 4 first team players in our own ranks. After all Agbonolahor, Barry (£20m!), Gardener, Moore(4m), Cahill(£4m), Ridgewell(4m), Whittingham(1m), Davies(£4m) and Osbourne have come through in the past.
Not bad business either if and when they move on!
MON has a long term plan to build a team - Just like Cloughie his mentor did.
Talent from Euro2008 -
That Bannon impressed me .... The two young lads up front looked good as well. I've not seen Clarke play but I've heard good things
I for one am getting sick of all the different links, we all know nothing will happen until O'neill gets back from his very badly timed jolly boys outing to the Euro's with Hansen and co.
One thing is for sure we have to sign BIG and have got to start doing it now if mr O'neill was here and had signed the likes of Bentley and a couple more big players by now maybe Gareth Barry wouldnt be asking to leave as we would be showing the rest of the Premier league we mean business and that Liverpool will be caught next season.
If all this money is available then why on earth are we not out spending it on these players? I personally believe we will spend around £10-£12M on 4 or 5 average players that will be on the fringes just as we always do.
Come on Villa please prove me wrong!
Arshavin would be quality, fast and can pass/finish. Right sided attacking mid/winger
We need to sign van der vaart replace barry. we need a miguel at least at right back, realistically need 2.Riise would be good cover for bouma and the left hand side of the midfield. Milner or Bentley ideally both add good competition and much need quality. We need a centre half someone along lines of ledley king. Goalkeeper we need 2 my choices would be Guzman and Friedel possibly Robinson. Upfront i feel we could cope with nathan delfounso coming through however Henry would definately put the cat among the pigeons in top 4 and signal villa's intent on gate crashing it. finally central midfielder possibly would look at huddlestone definately one for the future and is available. please give me feedback on what you feel about my ideas.
even an offical enquiry about a players availability will do for now anything to see where we are goin next season
BANNAN IS A LITTLE STAR JUST LIKE A SMALL VERSION OF BARRY BROOKSIDE BUT NEEDS TO PUT MOOR WEIGHT ON,IM SURE HE WILL BE ON THE BENCH NEXT YEAR, HE RAN THE MF AGAINST CHELSEA FOR THE YOUTH SIDE. ANY WAY FORGET MILNER GO FOR BENTLEY WITH HES FANTASTIC DELIVERY ON THE RIGHT AND YOUNGS ON THE LEFT CAREW WILL BE TOP GOAL GETTER.
Hospurs sign Dos Santos from Barca..we sign 0!!
On ya bike AV!!!
