My Aston Villa season review: Just praise and a confident feeling for next season
Written by Damian

It's easy to get annoyed when we lose to Fulham. It's also very easy when you've won three on the bounce and scored fifteen goals, to get carried away.

What's also very easy, is to forget about what is happening at Aston Villa Football Club, which is why it's nice to use the little search box on the site and look back every now and then.

Back in June, I posted my season preview, a little early I know, but it wasn't based on anything other than Martin O'Neill. I'm posting my season review today, because regardless of what happens this weekend, I'm ultimately a happy Aston Villa fan.

On Sunday afternoon I could be very frustrated or I could be overly confident for next season, but on Monday I know this is how I'm going to feel, so rather than wait I'm putting it up now.I've also got a long lunch planned where I intend to wax lyrical about Aston Villa.

We've moved in the right direction this season and we've moved forward by turning those draws into wins. We've moved forward in exactly the manner in which a professional team should do and if we can continue the development, which I expect us to, next season will be better than this.

Watching some of the players has also excited me. I'm really looking forward to Curtis Davies next season and hope he comes through his injury with no problems. He has looked commanding and composed and as long as Martin Laursen can continue I've got a very good feeling about their partnership next season.

I think we've been better defensively this season and I think we'll be even better next season and a lot of that is down to Martin Laursen.

I've got to mention Martin Laursen because I never thought we'd see him play this much after his horror start and for me he's turned out to be one of the best central defenders in the league.

Ashley Young, my player of the season, is a wonder to watch and I can see him getting better and better. If we can get another, just like him on the other side for next season, I can see us really terrorising defences.

We've also got the likes of Gardner and Gabby who are going to get better. I'm a big fan of Gardner and while I've felt frustrated with Gabby at times this season, I don't think it's helped that he couldn't get a rest and if Martin O'Neill brings someone else in during the summer, it's going to mean more competition for Gabby, but I think it's going to make him a better player.

My goal of the season, not for the build up but for the delight in watching it go in, is Petrov's goal against Derby. Others will have their own goal of the season, but it really was spectacular and I still watch it every now and then on YouTube.

Most will probably say their game of the season is one of the victories against Birmingham City but for me it was the Chelsea match in London.

We were robbed of the three points that day but I just remember thinking after the match, that we'd turned a corner and I felt a real pride in supporting Aston Villa. We were turning defeats into draws and against the top teams.

But the overriding factor in why we've done so well this season is down to Martin O'Neill. I referred to him in my season preview as the biggest single influencing factor in Aston Villa developing and I stand by that.

I stand by it, because the most important thing needed to develop this team is consistency and while Martin O'Neill has and will continue to frustrate us with his transfer dealings, it's all part of a bigger plan, that we can really only take guesses at.

Big things at big teams are going to change in the next few years and we are ideally placed to take advantage. Arsène Wenger has managed Arsenal since 1996 and he won't be there forever. Liverpool change managers every few years, which is why they're not competing for the league and Sir Alex Ferguson, after 22 years, is coming to the end of his reign at Manchester United.

Martin O'Neill has ten years on Sir Alex and over the next two or three seasons he's going to bring Champions League football to Aston Villa. You can already see the changes, or what I like to call, the Martin O'Neill effect at Aston Villa.

Back in June, I predicted we'd finish sixth and I've got a feeling we will and next season I can see us getting better, simply because of that Martin O'Neill effect.

So, please forgive me my occasional moan this season, it was done in the moment. Overall, I'm a very happy and confident Aston Villa fan. I'm looking forward to the summer, feeling quite strange because we're not going to see some players in claret and blue next season but really looking forward to next season, with renewed optimism, not just for next season, but the future of Aston Villa.

I couldnt agree more....

It's very easy to get frustrated when we slip up and over excited when we win a few matches but I would have taken 5/6th all day at the start of the season !!

The club is changing and that is what I am happy about....were going in the right direction.

lets get some early signings this summer and show the premier league we mean business. take a leaf out of spurs book, they have signed a quality player early on to show their own players (Berbatov in particular) that they are looking to compete and move to the next level...

that was a good read i disagree with one thing, player of the year mine is Laursen after all he went through to come back and play like he did this season was just great, but as you say its just opinion and i respect your choice, ashley has been great to watch aswell.

Great post.

I hope we signal our intent and prove to everyone, including Barry, that we are set to challenge and compete with the big four with some excellent and quality additions to the team- not only for the first team but for the squad too.

Nice post. We are doing as well as can be expected.

Just hope RL has the ambition as MoN. I am sure he has.

Off the subject but why not try to get Scholes on a 1 year contract???

Also is it true that if P'mouth win the cup that there may be an extra place?

I won't be at the game tomorrow, but farewell GB. You did us proud.

It will depend on the signings and I am hopeful. I would like to see Damian Duff come in to run the line. He can play on either wing, good crossing, go past players, score goals and and defend back. He seems to have recovered from 18 months of injury now so lets get him.

Well said, Damian. It's been a great season and there are more to come. As you say, Villa are well positioned to take on the top four during inevitable changes, and I'm looking forward to a new golden age for the Villa.

We will get three points and Europe this weekend, too, I believe.

100% agree with the entire post. My best moment of the season was after our second half comeback vs Newcastle. I remember the feeling of belief and excitement after the match, we were equal with Liverpool and still had the transfer window ahead.........So frustrating...I think you also make a good point when you say " i think most of us would agree we're going in the right direction, its just we all like the banter over the details". Spot on. We have a solid foundation now and a good platform to launch our assault on the top four. Might be a good time also to say a little thank you Damian, Doc, Chris and anyone else who has contributed to easily the best Villa site out there. Much appreciated fellas

OK, You win...I suppose I'm happy Damian. They say, 'What you ain't had you don't miss' Well we ain't had a cup or europe for some time it feels like we never had it, so yes if it all goes 'pearshaped' at the weekend I'll be a right moody get Sunday night, but Monday morning we'll all be looking at what new faces are coming in and looking towards next year...then guess what....The joys, heartaches and the ups and downs start all over againt. By the way, jsut something I found on YouTube, click this link, very funny. UP THE VILLA

yes we are going in the right direction,we have proved we are a match for the so called top teams we have either drawn with them or beaten them this season except man u we need more of the same type of players sitting on our bench as what we have in our first team just to make us that little bit stronger and if a certain player is having a so called off day we have a ready replacement but will we spend millions mmm i,m not so sure and i,m not sure we will have to as long as mon can keep finding players like ashley young, many of us slated harewood but we have to give him his due hes a real trier and maybe he let him self down by trying to hard some times and maybe he will be a great asset next season and before anyone starts moaning i would like mon to keep the wage bill down and dont go stupid i would like to know how many fans earn 40 to 50 grand just for a few hours work a week many wish they could earn 50quid an hour.... prediction for next season 4th and thats without bankrupting the club like many wish they would

Here's my season review, MON has cost us 4th place and when we lose against w ham....come on, you know we will...cost us Europe, this season was for the fu*king taking for a Championship League place, his lack of desire and no ambition to spend money in January has cost us big time, Can anybody please defend his choice of not getting a RB..ok, a RB is not going to win us many games but IMO that position has cost us at least 5 or 6 points, and with those points we would be in Europe. If we don't get europe o'neill has fcuked it up,IMO we should get rid of this mupet and get in a manager that will spend big, MON has absolutley no pulling power abroad to get in big name players...and before you twats talk about Celtic and the UEFA Final your talking shi*.. spend big on the next manager, id'e rather have Sven personally...By the way how many games has our ONLY January signing started....hmmmm fcuking ZERO

MoN's been terrific, setting up the club for the big push. Routledge was a cheap gamble, I think you need to judge him after next season, it was always going to take time to get his confidence back.

Taylor10, you may want to switch clubs. Try Chelsea or Man U. It's OK to switch allegiances if you're still in school, nobody will hold it against you.
