You just have to love Martin O'Neill
Written by Damian

I've said for a long time, even been criticised for it, that you don't need European football to attract quality players.

Sure it helps and it's part of the package, but it's as much about selling a vision, about getting the player to buy into the plans for the club than just been able to offer European football.

Well, Martin O'Neill seems to know this and he's saying absolutely all the right things at the moment, which makes me believe even more than ever that this is going to be a good summer.

Yesterday was a good day to listen to Martin O'Neill and his plans.

"Obviously being involved in Europe - even at Intertoto level - helps immensely. But in truth I've thought a lot about this and I think the Premier League itself is a massive lure for the continental players.

"Obviously it helps if there's European football and of course the ultimate is Champions League. But the Premier League and a side like ourselves with a reputation of being up and coming and attack minded should be enough of a draw."

I'm not saying that it wouldn't be easier if we were playing Champions League football every season, it would be, but there is still enough quality out there and the Premier League is a draw.

We should also not forget that the name Aston Villa is also a draw for players. Top that up with what Martin O'Neill has said, a wealthy owner and let's not forget Martin O'Neill's reputation, then it really isn't that hard to imagine some exciting players coming this summer.

I should add that last season I got excited because we were told things were going to happen and it didn't happen, so I shouldn't be getting this excited, seeing as we've been told nothing, but all the evidence points to real quality coming in.

Now, I'm no lawyer, so don't ask me to tell you or list why I think this, but if I were a judge, my verdict would be that an exciting summer is coming up and that Martin O'Neill knows it.

I dont get why everyones that if we dont spend big its going to be a disappointment. weve improved from 11th or summit to 5th/6th. and bar a few REALLY bad results we could almost be pushing for a 4th place. the only weakness in side really is our right side. and thats only 2 players we need. hardly spending biiiig.

how many players are leaving this summer .. i'm counting 5 that we know of, so if martin o'neill is going to add with quality, thats five just to break even from this season - and we do need more than this season - shown by some of the performances when some (not all) could have done with a rest ..

he's got a point, but it's surely a fact that aston villa knocking on the door of the very top teams, fighting for european competition is a better draw than the aston villa MON inherited that was close to being relegated the season before??

we've now got two seasons under our belt of demonstrating what we're about, it's no longer just words to convince people of our intentions. actions speak louder than words as our club keep telling us.

out:
sorensen, carson, mellberg, berger(twat), moore, and i'd let harewood and knight go if any decent offers come in.

this is the sort of summer we need if we really want champions league football....but i think it will prove virtually impossible without securing european football.

Every recent transfer window I've been excitedly tuning-in and logging-on to discover the latest news regarding big name transfers to Villa Park; and every time I've been disappointed as all the rumours and fictitious sightings of big players being seen at the ground turn out to be exactly that - fictitious. Let's accept something - It is VERY difficult to attract big names to Villa Park - perhaps because we are not in London or Manchester?

So this time let's all keep calm, don't get too carried away and most of all - only believe it when it happens!

I to think the MoN will spend this summer, and that he will bring in a couple of (2 maybe 3) quality players, RB, Forward, RW and the rest of the players coming in will be good squad players (no not Carr)

We can attract hungry players who want to be part of something rather than bit players. Very few can command starting places week in week out at the Top4. They'll get it at Villa and some players relish that, these are the players MoN wants, and he wants quality ones.

UTV

--- Bring on last night of the transfer window when we finally sign some dodgy lad from Scotland, and go into the season a few players short....... no, no, not gonna hapen... ---

To be honest, I think i'd rather see Barry go, I know he's a massive part of our squad but given the possibilities of transfers in and where next season may take us, I think we could survive. Judging by past comments he's made and recent performances, I think he'd prefer to try something new and he's my backing all the way.

BTW, I think this whole 'challenge the big 4' talk is a little over zealous. One thing at a time gentlemen.

Lets face it we will be having at least 5 signings this summer. Recplacing Ollie, Barry, Berger, Carew (yes he's off!), Harewood and some of the other 'second string' as they say. A oouple may come in from the youth side? Has anyone noticed how many free transfers are emerging this summer! Just realised how many and theres one or two that are decent. Anyway theres gonna be at least 5 new faces. Can't guarantee big names, but having a couple of big hitters will keep those turnstile figures up. MON, Crough ain't a big name, cos once he's left Liverpool Capello ain't gunna touch him with abarge pole, so stay clear. I think the best value for money mentioned uoto now has actually been The Bosnich as our new goalie...he's mint! Night, night.....gunna bed now!

Without Europe any club can only sign a certain quality of player. I remember his time last year most clubs were signing Van der Vaart and Snjeider. Who did Villa end up with NRC!!

Villa reserves got done over 3-0 by Liverpool Reserves tonight. We should have played Barry and told him to play sh*te. Rafa would be thinking twice about buying him then!

I'll keep the faith but I'll be honest I can't see any "world class signings" coming soon. I expect a few more zat knights and reo lol coker types to join. Nothing wrong with that if they strengthen the squad.

Shame we can't put a counter bid in on Gerrard the yanky owners might be daft enough to release him for significant fundssmilies/cheesy.gif

Got to disagree with u damian. Aston villa and especially Birmingham is not a nig draw for players from abroad and nor is MON. He is respected in Britain but not on the continent really - they havent a clue what he did with leicester, just think he won a few trophies with celtic as any manager would. Ramos for example is a far bigger draw than oneil

I like MON a hell of a lot and there's no doubt he has a way with words and a gift when it comes to man-management. Having however only ever seen him at clubs where the budget's tight and the expectations are somehow limited (i.e. beat Rangers as the rest of the league's crap), the jury's still out on whether he can handle a squad with real ambition and the odd ego. A great manager's able to do that and after Wycombe, Leicester and - to a degree - the Celtic bubbles of limited expectations and talent restrictions (i.e. Scotland) I'm curious to see if MON finally goes for players who can take us forward but that - inevitably - may also have the odd primadonna strop, prissy queens as many footballers are these days. In my book and after the right back saga, the jury's still well and truly out.

yeh i agree the mon factor isvery over rated, its a sky sports issue. and again birmingham isnt the most dazzling city to draw in a young fella from spain. if we want big names $$$ is the only thing that will matter, just like at newcastle.

obv a right back will come in, and a goal keeper and i would not be suprised if it (depressingly) is scott carson, if we dont get guzan this time round, but i think we will. a central midfielder with potential and flair, and an inadequate replcement replacement for barry. a central defender to replace ollie, o halloran u from reserves when he recovers, and a small nippy forward to play off carew. possibly another winger will come in, and if he does he will be quality, and there are already a surplus of squad fillers for that position.

there may be a few weak signings if and when the following leave; sorenson, carson, ollie, osbourne, barry, berger, maloney, moore.

either way it wont be mesmorising, maybe one or two of real quality.
certainly wont be coming fourth anyway, though it would be niiiiiice.

O'Neill is fantastic manager to work with no doubt, and I'm sure players from the UK would give a limb to work with him, but I don't think his reputation really spans the continent. I can't imagine a young up-and-coming Spanish or Italian talent being drawn to Aston Villa because of Martin O'Neill, chances are most of them have never heard of him.

interesting that Liverpool offered £10million for Gareth Barry, the same price they want for Scott Carson - A note to Gareth that Liverpool value him the same as their RESERVE goalie!

Maybe Randy Lerner should do the simple thing and hand control of the club over to Taglor. He is clearly a rationalist with a vision, we must follow his lead.

In fact any football fan should control the club, since they always seem to think they know best :]

It's just ever so simple isn't it. Talk to a person, give them a contract, play them.

You have no idea.

let the the manager let barry go at a price that is decent enough to allow us acquire the services of christian poulsen and mauro zarate (the blues won't afford him in the championship.

I really like the direction the club is going in and I really like MON and think he is the right man for the job, however I still can't see us going for the sort of players we are being linked with.
I would love to be wrong and I hope my words are rammed down my throat but I see us losing 5 players, we might get another Ashley Young style signing but then I am expecting more of a Bullard than Ballack coming into the club. I expect some decidedly average signings however I do think we will probably be in a similar position next year.

As a club we appear to have a mental block about going up that next peg. We need consistancy and that is the key. I think we are a better club than Everton (que abuse from Everton fans) and we should consistantly be finishing above them!

I think the right side needs sorting out obviously. Swcheinstieger (if thats spelt right, cant be arsed to check) would add great quality to our right midfield if we could get him as would Bosingwa or nelson to the right back. Then i would say another centre back to replace olof and incase Curtis Davies gets another knock, then i think Zoltan Gera would be a great signing, he could really help us with rotation for a cup run, as would the two leicester kids we've been linked with. Barry would be important to keep hold of and maybe another striker coz i think Gabby still needs some competition to get his act together.
Still, i cant wait to see whos coming, i know it'll probably be a let down but i cant help but be exited

we could spend millions just like newcastle have done but where has it got them, we all want class players at villa park but what is far more important is a football team playing as one. but to do this we need to have players sitting on the bench just as good as the players on the pitch or if not better dont be suprised if we dont use 1 or 2 more youth team players nxt season if not just to ease them in to the first team but just to make up the numers as well so i cannot see mon spending more then 20 million on at least 4 new players also if the rumours are true about barry wanting to leave unless we sign big name players we will be saying bye bye barry.
