Rumour of the day: Stephen Carr from Newcastle
Written by Damian

Right, with the transfer window opening up in a few days, I've decided to start a rumour of the day post where for one reason or another someone who is linked will get a mention.

I'll probably list all the other rumours from the day too, but for today only, I'm starting with just the one.

Not so long ago, I started titling my posts either good enough or not good enough for Aston Villa, with the player name and if I was still doing that I think it would be the latter for this particular player.

I liked him when he was at Spurs, because he liked to get forward, but he sold out to go to Newcastle and his game changed, which is hardly surprising because players change when you leave familiar surroundings.

But his game isn't going to change anymore, not at 31 years old, in fact he'll be 32 a few weeks after the season starts and well, his game is his game.

The likelihood of this rumour actually becoming something more than a rumour however, is going to get a surprising 'I wouldn't be surprised' or a three rating.

I wouldn't be surprised because he's the type of player that you might quite like in the squad in case your first choice right back, who I suspect will be with us soon, gets injured or is just not available, for whatever reason.

So, would you welcome Stephen Carr to Aston Villa as a squad player?

NO, i'd rather have someone younger from a lower league who could learn from our senior full back.

in the last 2-3 days weve been linked with beattie and carr. in the mean time man city get linked with ronaldinho and spurs with david villa. Speaks volumes to me

Must admit, it made me chuckle when I read that we were after Carr because we'd been priced out of the market for Boswinga (thought I'd mention the name for you Damien, just so you don't get stick for brining it up again).

It's a bit like saying you're going to buy a Ford Escort having been priced out of the market for a Bentley convertable.

But as a squad player he'd be fine, and like you Damien I wouldn't be at all surprised.

Was MoN at the Newcastle game in feb? Carr was one of their worst players and that's up against some pretty stiff competition.

Maybe as a squad player, but I would be far too worried that we would fail to sign anyone else and he'd end up as our regular right back. So as a precaution I'd say no.

Although one player doesn't make a team and one player can't be blamed for a trouncing ... I think Carr's performance against us at Villa Park this season is enough to say to us to keep well away!

Chimbonda will be the new right back ... watch this space!

UTV!

Carr s**te.......I also think Chimbonda will be a Villian, after MON has apparantly cooled his interest (wont pay) for Nelson.

Terrible player, anyone who gets realeased for not being good enough to be a member of a Newcastle Utd defence shouldn't be playing in the premier league anymore let alone for a club chasing for europe. I'd much rather see a young player from lower leagues such as Richard Stearman, who will be well cheap given that leicester just got relegated.

Rumours however of miguel for 8m which i reckon would be a steal, i've seen him many times for club and country and looks like he has it all.

old and now looking prone to injury. even as a back up option, would he be available when needed??

even for free, doesn't look good value.

there are a few right back seemingly avaiable this window...
chimbonda, ferrira/beletti chelsea, oshea/silvestre/brown now neville is back, eboue/hoyte. let alone the jonny foreigners.
I think that reading between the lines in MONs recent interviews he is going for it bigtime. comments like.
I have had a look for two seasons we need quality.....
We have just lacked that bit of quality when needed....
i will try to convince barry to stay after the end of the season...
We want to be challenging top 4 next season etc etc
If 80mn was avaiable when martin took charge and we know there must be some truth in this as it was part of ellis' negotiations then that figure must be something like 100mn with player sales and tv ticket sales etc. And i can honestly see us signing
nelson and chimbonda
van der vaart and the crout from bayern winger
defoe perhaps as his deal to pompey was a loan padolski

I think there will be three signings first from lower league. one is from bristol city the others leicester city. The leicester city one will involve one established youngster and one youth team player and we will have to go for a pre season friendly

No way, don't want Steve 'hand-ball' Carr but would gladly take his compatriot and also close to the exit door Steve Finnan as a squad playing right-back. I too think Chimbonda will be the first choice purchase

Just txt my mate who is a goerdie fan and asked him "what's stephen carr like?" the answer was nothing but "wank", I then replied "that bad?" he said "Yeah he's awful. They play midfielders at the back he's that bad"

Dont think I wanna think about this rumour any more!

We wont get Boswinga, Man U were also linked with him but the asking price was £23m.

Firstly, Stephen Carr has been a good professional for the republic, but if it were to come down to a choice between him and O'Shea, there is no comparison. Carr played some tidy football at Spurs but ever since his move to Newcastle ( which didn't go down too well with the Irish backroom setup) he looks a tired individual. O' Shea, if he could be enticed away from Utd, is a versatile player and has been seen more often than not in central midfield for Ireland. He add that bit of choice Villa are so desperately lacking in.

think derby have more chance of staying up than what we have of signing boswinga

If this is the right back that we have been waiting two years for then I will stop supporting villa and start watching paint dry instead. I would say comfortably the worst right back in the league, maybe we should bid for Titus also.

If spurs are supposedly in talks with Eto today - why are we even contemplating this rubbish player

i agree with signing younger players from lower leagues like richard stearman and joe mattock they are both first team players at leicester and r al ready to good for them at 17 and 20 mattock is already an england under 21 player and stearmans style of play will suit villa and he can slip into the right back position easily
