What a difference we have seen in Aston Villa in season two under Martin O'Neill.
The Northern Irishman has managed to notch at least 5 wins and 26 goals to our total from 2006/07 and with 2 games yet to play our goal difference currently sits 20 goals better off than last season too.
I have said in previous posts that we are not yet half-way through the 5 year plan to bring success to Villa Park but it is a vast improvement already.
The additions of Curtis Davies, Marlon Harewood and Nigel Reo-Coker have obviously played a good part in this success despite Martin O'Neill's decision not to buy a right back.
However, two of MON's other signings, Zat Knight and Scott Carson have come in for a lot of stick this season and rightly so on some occasions, but at least in the last few games, against albeit lower opposition we have seen a couple of clean sheets, hopefully we can get through the last two games with a similar record.
The other signings which Martin O'Neill has made are largely yet to be seen; Moustapha Salifou and Wayne Routledge have played a few minutes of first team football but Harry Forrester and Eric Lihaj are yet to make the step up to the first team with fellow youngster Nathan Delfouneso already making that move to the first squad in front of them.
Going into the last two games after drawing away to our main contenders for the 5th place spot and UEFA Cup we can be very confident that our team is firing on all cylinders at the moment. Seventeen goals in 4 games is one hell of an achievement, even against teams from the bottom three.
Bolton for instance have managed draws with Sporting Lisbon and Bayern Munich and wins over Atletico Madrid and Man United this season and Birmingham have managed to pick up points at Anfield and the Emirates as well as getting draws at home again to Arsenal and Everton in recent weeks.
We are most definitely moving in the right direction and with 6 points still to play for we have a home game against Wigan and a trip to West Ham to get them. With our goal difference so healthy we just need to win both and hope the blue half of Liverpool drop points at the Emirates or against King Kev's Newcastle.
All in all the 16 players who've started games this season have been great to watch and even scored at least 4 goals eight times this season the three games before Everton followed the 5-0 thrashing of Wrexham in the FA Cup, what felt like a 4-4 defeat at Spurs, the brilliant 4-0 at Ewood Park, the hugely entertaining 4-4 at Stamford Bridge and that 4-1 second half thrashing of Newcastle at Villa Park.
If we stick to the current formation with Ashley in his free 'go to the right, go to the left, just pop up wherever and get the ball' role (his words not mine) I think we're on to a winner and Europe next season.
With this though must come more signings like Ashley, with Mellberg gone and Luke Moore, Tommy Sorenson, Patrick Berger and Scott Carson almost certainly joining him out of the door we need to hopefully get into double figures with our transfers in this summer and with it some real quality.
This is MON's big window and I'm sure he'll pull it out of the bag for us, for now though I for one would like to sit back and enjoy some good football and a position in the league much better than last seasons 50 points in 11th place.

Villa have been extremely lucky to be where they are this season. In almost every game the deciding decision has gone in your favour. I know this because my best mates a vllian. I've seen opposition goals ruled out for offside when they were on, blatent opposition penalties not given and the opposite always happens in Villas favour. Even yesterday Everton should of had a penalty. Also for such a small squad you have not had a sinlge injury all season. 2 months ago things went pear shaped for a few weeks, your luck ran out and your season ended. I wish you well for the Intertoto at least but I wouldn't get too carried away cos reality is just around the corner.
nicky
if your position was one based on fact and not make-believe then you wouldn't get the slating you're about to get, possibly.
not had a single injury all season?
but you are right. reality is just round the corner but the league table doesn't lie
Well.. that wasn't a self-serving piece of non-claptrap that never made me want to retch.
Those grapes your choking down there a bit sour mate?
What a load of garbage, i take it Nicky is a bitter everton fan, or some kind of Blue muppet anyway.. We have been lucky with injuries and thats it, apart from that we have had some excellent results, played some blinding football, and absolutely battered alot of teams.. Yesterday was not a penalty as Petrov was moving his arm away from the ball, not towards it, i hate all these calls for hand ball recently, the fact is if someone blasts a ball towards your arm or hand its impossible to get out the way, then they put the 'Slow motion' on the replays and it looks like the player is doing a deliberate hand ball. GARBAGE..
Nicky - it isn't like referees don't make blatant mistakes when officiating other games now is it? Yes, we've had luck. But so has every other team at some point during the season.
Luck>Ability
Nicky, what a plonker u really are!
Not a single injury to Curtis Davies for a third of the season, Craig Gardner for the past three weeks, John Carew for a fair few weeks. All are part of the 16 starters that were mentioned plus Gabby, Mellberg, Barry et al have missed games here and there through injury.
You obviously can see that you are talking a load of old pony and the fact that you didn't have the balls (or ovaries, Nicky is a girls name) to state who you support shows that whoever it is that you support has there own shortcomings that you don't want slated.
There are only four teams that definately will finish above Villa and i bet my shirt that you don't support any of them, you're probably just a jealous Bluenose!
That is all.
'I know this because my best mates a villian' Priceless! ;D
what about villa bein the second highest goal scorers in the league behind man utd and the highest goal scorers away from home plus the 52% of our goals is from set pieces im sure not all that is luck im sure its just some hard work at the training ground.
Maybe you should try looking back over the season and see how many games I'm talking about. Yes refs get it wrong, but for whatever reason Villa are getting vital decisions every week. Take a look before you slate me. As for injuries, yes you've had a player out here or there but you haven't had a few out at the same time for any length of time. I know I'm right because every weekend I get onto my mate. I'm telling you. Before you slate me, at least one of you have a look back through the season so far.
All keepers make mistakes, just look at calamity James.
Carson will become world class!
yesterday we go 1-0 down but the fightin spirit from the lads was quality, thats not luck we keep fightin on to get points. the end of the day the league table doesnt lie mon has done wonders this year
nicky your a complete idiot, tell me how many teams go to chelsea and score 4 goals against them then tell me how many teams go to blackburn and score another 4 goals even the likes of man u and liverpool never got any where near, ok we had our little bit of so called luck with injuries or was this down to the training methods employed by mon,and is team, wake up nicky you might see a half decent team for once.
what about when we beat bolton 4-0, derby 6-0, blues 5-1 those wins cant be put down to refs in our favour. the luck has gone against us aswel like 1st game of the season we played liverpool and bout 5min to go gerrard popped up wiv a free kick to win and that shouldnt of really been a free kick.
barry must stay at villa park, its about time we let the manager and the rest of the world know this before we lose one of the best players we have had for a long time by offering him a contract he just cannot refuse and also a barry must stay day at the wigan match
Unfortunately Nicky you have been a bit niave to post something like you did on a Villa website and not expect to get some stick back.
Villa and Everton both have smaller than average squads and both teams have done well. However to suggest that the majority of our victories are down to luck is ridiculous. In fact if you look at yesterdays match, Neville was incredibly lucky with his goal as it Laursen and went in.
Then to try and qualify your statement by using 'my mate a Villa fan' is silly.
I have no problems with over fans posting on other fans sites if it is something that has any fact behind it, but that is the one thing your statement is lacking.
I am not going to flame, but just look back at what you wrote and what FACTUAL information do you have to back up your statement?
How about the extra time that got given to Arsenal when we were winning 1-0, arn't we just so lucky! ;D
i'll play devil's advocate for a moment and assume there's a nugget of truth in Nicky's claims... there's two explanations for a team to be "lucky' during the course of an entire season:
A) a huge conspiracy by referees to defraud the premier league and cheat aston villa up the table.
B) aston villa's approach to games, i.e. fair, positive and attacking will naturally lead to officials giving the benefit of the doubt here and there.
*IF* there was a nugget of truth i would say B myself, fortune favours the brave and you make your own luck in this world!!
however, the truth is that we've had luck go against us in equal measure - the difference these days is that it doesn't get our heads down and affect the result as it would in years past.
as for injuries, you can't legislate for the bad ones like curtis davies, but the fact we don't suffer from debilitating levels of niggling injuries in our small squad, like strains and pulls for instance, is testament to our world class training facilities IMO. again, you make your own "luck".
when you have the quality set up aston villa has these days you can manage a lot of things other teams leave up to "luck". evidently it leaves fans of our rivals jealous and us open to the silly accusations often aimed at the big four... thanks for stopping by an confirming what we all know.... aston villa are on their way to great things!!

Oh, I don't know chaps - I think we should all be very grateful to Nicky. Davies will be delighted to learn that his Achilles isn't actually ruptured... I mean, you'd think with all the physios who looked at it, they would have noticed a detail like that. But fortunately Nicky is here to set them straight. (And no doubt Carew will be relieved to hear that he's never really injured either - buck up and get back on the pitch, lad!)
Nicky, I just ask you take a look at the following website: LINK
This site gives results based on what it would have been had the referee got all decisions right. You will find that the Villa would have 5 points less than they currently do. Not exactly lucky decisions all year like you suggested eh?
Nicky is a wanker, Nicky is a wanker, la la la la, la la la la. Think that pretty much sums things up.
the season isnt even over and we havent taken everton over yet (which we will) and already everton fans(nicky i presume) are coming on here bitching and whining, i love it, the fact that they know we have a better squad, a better manager and a better future. but what else can they expect when they rely on a former blues player to score there goals.
LMAO, Leo thats priceless :D.
As far as luck goes it swings and roundabouts, anyone remember THAT free kick that gerrard scored on the opening day that robbed us of 1 pnt, the dubious ref in the man utd game that gave 2 red's, the blatant dive by ballack in our 4-4 draw at the bridge, that extra minute against arsenal in which bentder(sp?) equalised for the gooners and the most recent is the defelection off lausen to give everton the lead against us.
Thats only what i can remember off the top of my head so im sure there's more, but even looking at that table no team is that far from their current possition really.
Oh and Nicky, who do you support?
Lads can we all point and laugh at Everton
cause there gonna mess up 5th and gonna lose out to the
mighty villa.
Were all going on a European Tour!!!!!
UTV
Damian, you were dead right about Nick getting stick, so much that I forgot what the original article was about!
Do we remember the comments we made at the start of the season? After a VERY quiet transfer market in the summer we couldn't imagine chasing 5th place at this stage. 5th place FFS!! 5 - the magic number. Nicky don't lose that number. HA HA HA. UTV etc.....
Can I just say thanks to Nicky, this is the first article I've written and managed 25 comments without any critisism(constructive or otherwise).
Cheers Chris.
oh, was there an article on this page somewhere?? must have missed it!! ;)
well done primeminister not even any spelling mistakes ;D
Nice one Leo.. and I'm guessing that Nicky is a bitter Bluenose so she will see that based on the 'rightresult' website the Blues are even further into the brown stuff that is the relegation places.
Defintly a lot a players needed in his 2nd season has martin got it in him to sign 8 or 9 players tho i dont think so its defintly what we need

st
the best we can hope for is the same again next year!
sorry i am delighted with this season regardless of how it finishes tho!
I really shouldn't get involved in stuff like this as it's not good for the ticker and i shouldn't really be letting the opinions of Nicky get to me. But it has made me wonder why i feel as mad as i do about his/her comments.
And it's this...many Villa fans have replied and listed several occasions where we have been totally unlucky and lost out on valuable points.
Not once has Nicky backed his theory that we've been lucky in almost every game with any cold hard facts.
Can you please supply reference of all these occasions where Villa have been so lucky for all of us Villa fans to recall, because on the whole, i can't remember any.
Thats what's getting to me because I can't work out if Nicky is a nob/fanny, or if there is any substance to his/her arguement. I look forward to the comprehensive list.
UP THE VILLA ;) ;)
celtic_villain ur a bit pessimistic mate. i was thinkin more of a gk, 2 rbs, cover at cb bentley or van der vaart.
