I'd say that was a captains performance from barry today. Great to see a clean sheet also as we've not had too many this season. All round great performance and if we stay where we are it looks like the intertoto cup is our route to europe. |

| Wait for the inevitable posts quoting they said the man utd was just 1 game, well so is this and it still won't win us anything. Great result though especially after Boltons performance against Arsenal, I like old Barry and we should give him the role he enjoys. |

Didn't manage to get to the game but sounds like we played well and got the result we wanted. Keep this up for Derby and Blues and we should be well on our way to intertoto. Finally a clean sheet and Gabi on the scoresheet. |

Was a good game. But we got a bit shaky at the start of the second half. Top players; Petrov Bouma Barry Petrov cleaned up our mistakes and was constantly creating good passes and cutting down Bolton's attacks. Bouma showed great skill going forward and a lot of commitment when tackling also. Barry was his sensible self, with good choice of passes, and two brilliant crosses for his assists. His goals were good too. |

At times Villa played some excellent football. The move ending in Barry's superb run and cross and Gabby's finish was as good as anything from Villa all year. Barry as good a game as he's had all year, and the formation really played to his strengths, and Young's as well. Ashley was pure quality, and Petrov was quite good, with 3 or 4 excellent outlet passes at least. Wouldn't mind seeing more of this setup. Carson...he needs to see a shrink. All at sea on a couple corners. Defense again shaky at times, trying to get too clever and not just getting the ball out. Why do we always seem to clear the ball into other Villa players in the box, keeping it alive? But all in all, very satisfying to return to winning ways, and Villa never really looked all that bothered. Hoping the lads can kick on from here. |

easily barry's best game all season and deserved his assists and goals. it's what we've been missing for a while now, especially the previous few games!! in fact, young deserves a special mention with petrov and NRC just behind. probably the best collective performance from our midfield unit this season. the only negative.... carson's flapping gives me the jitters. overall very relieved to get a decent result to get the confidence back!!! |

A convincing win is what was needed here, we got that and everything is rosie again!!!!! Hmmmmm.... Not really in my eyes I'm afraid! MON should be made to explain why this slump happened, why we are so short on numbers, why we have to put up with glaringly obvious managerial errors - the types of things that are so smack you in the face obviously going to cause problems during the course of a season, but yet not put right even when armed with "substantial funds" and nearly 4 months worth of transfer time and 2 years worth of planning and research (into players)! Yes I'm still banging on about our lack of quality, numbers and ideas! One game does not change my stance on the situation down at Villa Park. Okay great - we won one game, if we lose next week it means nothing! The result today is what I EXPECT, and I EXPECT the same against Derby! I'm not gonna sit here and arse lick because we beat a team who are being relagated! If our ambition is anything like as high as what the club are claiming it to be I "DONT EXPECT" mid-season slumps due to "lack of players" and "fatigue". This summer is the defining transfer window for MON, if he cant find, attract & buy the players we so desperately need for a push for a mere Uefa Cup place then what does that say about our club and our manager? |

The only area we looked weak was during corners and Carson was being scruffy. Mellberg also had a bit of an incident but played well for the rest of the match |

| I EXPECT some people didn't read mon's comments on the slump recently. he SAID the buck basically stops with him. He DIDN'T blame lack of players or fatigue because he SAID that shouldn't be a problem because the players are only playing one game a week. It was a lack of form, which whether we like it or not happens.yes if we had a bigger squad the players could have been rotated when the form dropped but mon trusted these players and didn't feel forced to panic and buy squad fillers.(hes spent the best part of 2 years getting rid of dead wood) It was better yesterday and a game we should be winning and did. If you EXPECT too much too soon you will ultimately be dissapointed. improvements are there to be seen from two seasons ago and from last season. the summer is vital if we are to push on next season and progress at the same rate. great things don't happen over night. i agree signings need to be made in the summer, and questions will be asked if they are not. i dont feel like we've missed out this season yet. but next season is massive. up the villa. get behind the lads. be proud. be claret and blue. |

Baby steps guys, baby steps! OK Bolton (going down) 4-0 is a decent result and ofcourse there needs to be a massive influx of key players over the summer but just look at the table guys really! - We're not doing so bad. If you forget about the key (millions of $$$$ consistantly available) top four, the ever inconsistent Everton (be up for relegation next season) and Portsmouth (complete fluke) then the table's looking pretty damn good! :-) Too many Pessemists hanging around this 'ere blog!! Top five next season - Bring it on!! Up the Villa (from a constant fan down under in New Zealand) |

| Good performance by the boys, which we EXPECT obviously (seems to be the in thing now to emphasis this word) just like i EXPECT taglor rolling in with the usual cynical view. I agree with a couple of things mj had to say, especially about the 2 years of shipping out dead wood. Chrisoden and Taglor, whilst your posts reek of pure frustration, they also come from the passion of being long time supporters of the Villa, and we are all in the same boat ofcourse. Randy loves MON especially keeping the wages at a very sustainable level but it makes sense for Randy for us to break into european football because its more $$$$$$. This summer will tell us the intent anyway...Until then lets have a few more wins and get up around the 60 point mark and beyond |

But my comment also has no frustration in it, I'm no lover of barry but yesterday he did a captains job and grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck. So i applaud that same with the rest of team, only disappointing or frustrating thing from yesterday was our set-piece marking and carson flapping two corners. |

One of our best performances of the season. My ratings: Carson 6, Bouma 7, Laursen 7, Mellberg 7, Reo-Coker 6, Petrov 8, BARRY 10, Young 9, Agbonlahor 8, Carew 7, Harewood 8. |

Villavilla, i have to say Agbonlahor was only deserving of a 6. He scored a goal, but his first touch was poor on many occasions, and he dawdled on the ball too often and gave the ball away. Carson, NRC and Agbonlahor were all 'okay' the rest were solid. Oh and well done to Zat Knight for hitting himself in the face, twice! |

Great performance, barry, petrov and young were the best players on the field by a mile. We have to play this diamond formation with petrov as a holding midfielder and young in a free-role, we wouldve given anyone a good game yesterday UTV |

| We're not World beaters now as much as we weren't an awful team before this game. The limitations in the squad remain as well as the desperate need to add 7/8 quality players to the existing group. Over to MON and his scouts, this summer's either the turning point or another sleepy chapter in Villa's recent history. |

We are going to make Europe!!! Everton's remaining fixtures: @ Birmingham, Chelsea, ASTON VILLA(all depends on this match),@ Arsenal, Newcastle. If we win our remaining 5 games, which is very possible with the schedule we have, we will accumulate 15 points. 15 52 = 67 pts. If everton lose to Chelsea, Arsenal, and US while winning the other two games they will add 6 pts to their now 60, equaling 66. we will be able to pass everton as long as we win all these remaing 5(that we should win) pompey are still a point ahead of us with a game in hand, but if they win the FA cup it wont matter!!! |

@ Leroy: Finally someone with some intelligence rather than the usual responses you get on here from the "go and support small heath" merchants! When you put it like that "shipping out dead wood" I suppose MON has had a lot of his time taken up selling/assesing who is expendable rather than buying! But now surely (I say this in hope more than anything) MON finds himself with a whole summer (well a month or so) to buy players! I agree with the figures people are coming out with 8-10 new players is what's needed for next season, but the big question is can he pull it off in one window??? This summer is the biggest test MON will have faced as our manager - and also one of the most exciting! I hope he can get the players in but I'm not holing my breath (coz I'm sick of having my hopes built up and us ending up with Zat Knight). Anyway Leroy, cheers for the feedback, I'll lay off MON for a while (or until August 31st anyway!) and hope the final push for europe is successful - but again I'm not holding my breath! |

The difference today was quite simply that the midfield played. Barry had his best match since God knows when and it showed. The additional space allowed by Bolton in midfield played to Petrov's strengths. Young was back in form and Bouma was outstanding; Laurson was better as well. On the debit side Carson was nowhere near in control of his area and the defense looks rocky at set pieces as a result. On this evidence if we didn't know him we wouldn't rate Cahill but I still think he is proving to be a big miss. Knight's uncertainty is putting too much pressure on Laursen. |

Doesn't matter if Pompey win the cup or not as far as intertoto is concerned as they haven't applied this season. I think Everton may be beyond us so it's refreshing to know that our current position would get us into Europe, albeit at the expense of the summer holidays. Hopefully that won't matter either as we'll have signed a hatful of players to give the lads a well deserved break. UTV! |

| Europefornextseason let's not start getting carried away, Bolton almost beat Arsenal and Everton are a class team who have grinded out results all season. We still have to play Everton and Blues which are both hard games, we should win all of those games but look at the run we just had before the Bolton game. I would love it if we could finish finish fifth but the chances are pretty slim of overtaking Everton at this point, predicting that they will lose the 3 of their last 5 games is a little optimistic. |

@ Woodinho; I wont be holding my breath either, but i think were about to find out (this summer) what Uncle Randys true intentions are. We are only a few, ok probably several, signings away from being a legitimate contender, but is Randy going to push things through or is he going to play this extremely upsetting and frustrating budget game that anchors us in this ever increasing group of mid table dwellers? I think the biggest sign will be in the first week or two (of the transfer window) i hope MON has his targets set and follows through early, but again i wont be holding my breath.....At least we can all (hopefully) look forward to a few more goals in the next couple of weeks and then hopefully we dont tighten up for the big one at Everton... |

| Rumour has it, is that Martin O'neil will bid to try and sign Van Der Vaart in the summer. Wilfred Bouma is supposed to have been talking to Van Der Vaart about a possible move and telling him all about the club. Now if this rumour is true and its turns out in the summer that O'neil will try and sign Vaart then that would be a massive signing for the club and a step in the right direction, well a leap lol. Because the Van Der Vaart's of this world is what Villa needs to improve, move forward and progress. Also i would love to see Bentley, Santa Cruz, Kranjcar, Robinson, Nelson, Bridge and a few squad players come in to bulk up the numbers |
