Simply not good enough: Aston Villa 0 Sunderland 1
Written by Damian
Saturday, 22 March 2008

No one player is going to get the blame today, they all are and so is Martin O'Neill and if anyone tells me to 'keep the faith' or 'believe' in the comments section I think I'll go mad.

I'll go mad because today we were awful and it's not the first time; in fact it's becoming quite a habit.

To best sum it up, Marlon Harewood came on in the 57th minute and within ten minutes he'd had more chances than any other player in the previous hour.

I'm sure Doc will have something to say on this later but for now, I'm just going to sit back and wait to hear what poor excuses we hear on the club site.

It's not as if there hasn't been enough time to get them to play a different type of football or enough transfer windows to bring in players.

Things have to start changing soon because we're seeing too many long balls, too many hopeful balls and not enough development.

On the bright side, Blues lost and if Everton win later I'm £155 up on the day.

I'm struggling to get the comment system to sync up with actual comments posted. Please reload the page by holding down shift and refreshing in Firefox or just refreshing in Internet Explorer. Thank you.

The word pathetic springs to mind and the players have literally thrown away any slim chance they had of europe!if i hear them complain at the end of the season about not having europe then i will remind them of this game and the middlesborough one and tell them its their own fault cause they just werent up to it in the last eight games of the season!were guna get a battering next week!

carson at fault yes - only because he never came for it .. he hesitated for a split second which was all chopra needed

in teh 22nd he came out and drops the ball and again in the 39th he comes out and misses a corner

the one time you want him to come out - for their goal and he bottles it

Crap tactics, I am not paying money to millionaired for that sort of entertainment. Nearly end of season and I think we can start seeing where we are headed and that is long ball boring mid table crapdom. MON is a mickey mouse amateur who did well in the Scottish league, a zombie could do well managing celtic or rangers, he is tactically inept and the signings show his absolute lack of imagination or knowledge of world football.
MON signings, and this is after a season so it's fair game to ask questions from people being paid a lot of money from me and you.

HAREWOOD - AVERAGE AT BEST
KNIGHT- UTTER CRAP
MALONEY- CRAP
SALIFOU- WHO?
CARSON- CRAP
PETROV-UTTER CRAP
ROUTLEDGE-WHO?
DAVIES-AVERAGE
REO COKER-CRAP
CAREW 9 GOALS AVERAGE
YOUNG-GREAT
I TOLD YOU SO NO EUROPE AND MID TABLE CRAPDOM
All you keep the faith and 5 yar plan parrots shut up after today these millionaires are not worth the money to watch.
Get rid of MON and give us someone with guts otherwise after those signings who the hell are we getting in the summer . rah rah rah

there are two definitions at dictionary.com for 'fickle':

1. likely to change, esp. due to caprice, irresolution, or instability; casually changeable: fickle weather.
2. not constant or loyal in affections: a fickle lover.

and you post a comment about 'support'

who said anything anywhere about not supporting the club?

utterly embarrassing. but it doesnt surprise me. this bunch of players is pretty average and have been over achieving. oneil has let us down badly. the players he has brought in our abysmal with the exception of young. some might say also carew, but a oneil didnt even plan on signing him - was just offered him in the baros deal and b he only has 9 goals 3 of which came in one game against a joke outfit.
what has oneil really done for us in these 2 years. last year bottom half - this year prob 8th/9th. no cup runs at all. the smallest quad in the prem with no back up and pretty weak overall and spent lerners money horrifically.
this summer is his last chance - make the signings and get it right or its time for a chnage. he will be in his 3rd season. forget the 5 year plan - by the 3rd season a manager at a club like villa has to delivering something!!! at any other club oneil would be near the sack!!!

So what's gone wrong..? So much early year promise...Manager and Player of the Month Awards. Good results. Good football. But now we're left with a disastrous run into the end of the season. Is it down to tired players? Lack of quality? A small squad? No Bottle? Bad management? I'm so frustrated!! For me one thing is certain Martin O'Neill faces the biggest summer of his managerial career. If quality signings are not made (and we can all see we need first team players not back ups) then the game may be up on my fellow Irish man. I've just been listening to Irish Radio and there are a few callers looking for O'Neill's head. I don't agree...but the pressure is on. smilies/sad.gif

MON is totally to blame here. It was like watching Wimbeldon. Too many of our players simply not good enough technically. Both Full backs can barely run with the ball without falling over and as for our CM its a total joke. Im sick in the face of saying it that Barry is lost in there. By the way none of our players are English squad quality. I include Young in that comment as well. We have the most one trick winger in England. He never beats his man and always goes on the outside. Every FB in the country has his number now. And how the hell can he continue with Carson in goal.He was brutal again today. I wont even get started on our bench. 5 year plan my arse,i don't even trust this guy to have a RB in place for start of next season.

GOING DOWN VILLA PARK IS A JOKE, im glad it was sold out and i didnt watse my money to give then players, I was watchin it live, the goal came from harewood closing the ball down in their half really pressuring them, their guy just smacks it forward and catches knight slippin again 'F**k off back to fulham you twat' If carson STAYED ON HIS LINE, instead off comin half way then stoppin then coming, it would av been a draw, The man is simple a fool, where is TAYLOR at, why does mon not PLAY HAREWOOD FROM THE START is he stupid?
people need to stop goin on about mon being great and we should be happy, well im not F**kin happy

1 - He has won us Nothing
2 - He hasnt bought in any decent players
3 - We have near the same points as 7 other clubs
4 - He has sold better players than we have kept
5 - He Hasnt played harewood from the start
6 - He plays gabby and carew eveygame (it doesnt work)
7 - Same tactics every match
8 - 5 year plan Nonsense

Ashley young and gereth barry should be ashamed of their performance today it was a disgrace, watch motd and you'll see

Some people were getting too excited about Europe. Personally I'd rather watch entertaining games (like the 4-4s) win some 4-2, lose some 3-2 and finish 9th then playing boring root one football (like Everton) which can get you 6th if you dont bottle it when it really matters, but when you do it gets you 10th.

It's funny because I went to more games under DOL (dont get me wrong his football became spineless/gutless but I reckon if Lerner came in after DOL finished 6th, we would've finised in a UEFA place regularly). MON is charismatic but his football aint great and I cant be ar$ed anymore paying £35 (or in fact anything more than £15) to watch us hoof it into the box.

I doubt anyone agrees with me, but then not many Villa fans do.

I'm almost glad (almost) that we lost as maybe now people will see the club for what it is, a nice safe investment for an american billionaire who wil inject just enought cash to stay in the premiership and the black but no more as to achieve, I am thinking maybe ELLIS sold us out to an american as a cash cow that will mow proceed to milk us until dry of worth/ambition and entertainment.

Bottom line is if you don't pay the wages or get into Europe you wont attract the top players to your club. If you don't get the top players to play for your club you don't get into Europe. Does anyone see a pattern here? Chelsea spent big got the players and are now are perpetually in the champions league. 1. Either Villa have a LOAD of money to spend next year or we don't.
2. If we have a pot of it...has our manager Martin O'Neill got the ability to SPOT and BUY the quality we are lacking? I say SPOT as so far...it has been worrying.

So far he's only bought one decent prospect in YOUNG. Quality will cost so I hope MON is not afraid to spend BIG or it's middle of the road football and mid table for The Villa if that quality doesn't arrive. Big summer for you Martin... smilies/cool.gif

I had a bad feeling this was going to happen and it has. Our squad size has come back to bite us. MON i belive wants to sign the best players but they wont come as we are not in europe. He has let players go that are moaning about lack of first team football - cahill, davis, moore (all young upstarts in my opion) and bought people in who are cheap but will sit on the bench and work hard and be quiet- Knight, harewood, routledge. The problem is our team is based upon aggy and young and they have run out of ideas and become tired. None of the rest of the players are stepping up to the plate and taking the pressure off these guys.

We need to be patient and wait till the summer, last one was the first summer O'neil had and as such didnt have the league position to sell the club to players. However the only player i dislike is Knight, he a liability. If you watch 95% of our goals since davies got injured they are all due to knights mistakes.

Lastly we were always struggling to get into europe although it would be a bonus, pompey have a good side as do liverpool and everton.

It will be a real shame if the season fizzles out after so much good work. However, despite the debacle today I think it's pretty obvious that we're moving forward. The over achievement of this squad up until now has just raised expectations a wee bit too high .............for this season.

To retain any sense of credibility with the fans the manager and board must be united in the opinion that this summer is time for the "big push". We have simply come as far as we can with a squad that size and due to the amount of money washing around the Premiership the competition will be geeting hotter every year. It's "sh*t or bust" time.

MON is most definitely in a better position to sell the club to prospective signings this summer as the ground is full and the efforts of the players are not going unnoticed by the likes of Capello.

However this season ends i think we can all look forward to the brighter future that we were promised provided the necessary steps are taken - there's certainly no need to go calling for MON to be sacked or likening Randy L to Deadly Doug....yet.

I dont think its right to be starting to say sack o'neill, ive supported villa all my life and when we lose like we did today and put in such a s**t performance i get angry (my girlfriend can vouch for me on that one) but the way i see it MON has injected new life into the club, going forward we are good, scoring goals at will at the start of the season, although yes now they seem to be harder to come by. I read something in the paper today that said villa park has seen the 3rd most amount of goals this season, behind anfield and old trafford (i think), that is testament to the way MON has got us playing. However where we have been let down is by 2 of his signings, in carson and knight. I think i speak for 99% of villa fans when i say carson is shocking and is no where near premiership quality at this stage of his career let alone international quality, and in knight we have have the reincarnation of titus bramble. unfortunately these are 2 areas of the pitch where mistakes are punished. However i think all-in-all MON has done a great job and the issues addressed above thankfully can be put right in the summer. on september 1st feel free to start the bashing but until then lets see how he does in only his second summer at the club. he will spend the money. after todays performance he has no choice but too. hope that makes sense, im tired.

I still fully believe MON can bring us European Football. This season Europe appears to have slipped through our grasp, which rightly indicated can be attributable to MON's transfer policy, or his faith in the current squad. However i think he is a man who learns from his mistakes and can take this club to the level it belongs.

One thing I'm certain of is I don't want our club to end up like Newcastle, where not winning the league is failure so the the manager is out. As Utd, Arsenal and more comparably Everton have shown, stability builds success. UTV

All you "have faith in MON" monkeys can kiss my ass. I think we owe MON thanks for helping bring stability and hunger to the team once again, but for someone who's had success in lower leagues (which I include the SPL in) he just doesn't have what it takes to cut it in the top six in the Premier League and he doesn't have it in him to buy top class players. For all the good he has done, he has made just a few errors but I'm sorry to say they're all fatal (mainly the selling of too many players which has left the squad threadbare and poor inbound purchases). Where this is a risk for us now is that he's raised the profile of our best players (Barry, Young, Gabby) and a poor finish this season could see the big teams come in and take the best from us.

Sorry MON, thanks for your help but you've done all you can for villa now. Randy, time to get on the phone to Jose.

The standard of spelling and grammar on this messageboard is shocking. Why not go away, learn how to put a sentence together and come back with some new comments. Villa fans must be the biggest whingers in the Premier Lwague.

And I'm a season ticket holder so I get to hear them every home game.

Appalling!

Carson should not be part of the claret and blue next season send him back as soon as possible. Knight im not even going to waste my breath on him...Gardener is not a right back...Harewood needs to start...maloney what a poor little scottish guy...Ashkey "I only have one trick but I think Im like Ronaldo and France will never work me out" Young get on the training pitch and develop more to your armoury son...

I have been defending MON all season and fair play he came out and said he has to take responsibility for the teams performance but christ what the hell have we been playing over the past two weeks.

There is a man up north by the name of BENTLEY. Now tell Lerner to stop spending money on s**tty art get his cheque book out and make him the first 20million pound sighning over the summer. We paid nearly 10 million for webcam Ashley and Bentlry is by far more talented. If martin wnatsto keep his policy of english players well he is you man to "improve" the squad. Follow that by Miguel, Milner and Wes Brown and pay the f@@king wages. 60k a week? What is that type of money to a yank, who can donate 5million to an arts museam.

Oh and please sign a keeper and start the next game with Taylor..The likes of anderson, carrick, scholes, giggs, ronaldo, tevez and rooney have the potential to make Carson look like a right tit. Martin do him a favour and safe his blushes..

I could go on...but its 6 and half hours since the end of the game and im only now just calming down. Victory at Bolton Derby Everton anyone?? Hmmmm...I was thinking the same thing smilies/cry.gif

I cant even be arsed to be p**sed off about todays game. I have to say i really REALLY didnt expect that! It was nagging at the back of my head before the game that it might happen but i didn't think it would. WHAT A JOKE!
Some people may come on here saying "give mon time" or some bull like "keep the faith villa brothers" but its all b******s. Soon enough villa fans are gonna start making their voices heard about this. Too many times have we all seen this over the years, broken promises, players that dip out of form, crap cup runs and NO EUROPE>. This season is gonna end up a waste of time at this rate and that is insulting to the fans in so many ways.
What do we have to do to get the team inspired????
sell more season tickets????Sing louder when losing to relegation fodder???? buy another kit that doesn't actually exist????? all the money and effort we put in get thrown in our faces by being treated to a reo coker, carson,Zat knight showcase. And what the hell happened in January??? How predictable was all this going to be by only buying wayne bloody routledge. (apparently hes not confident at the moment......even though he was destined for championship football again until mon came in, bet he couldnt believe his luck. What does he need to be inspired??)
There is a whole world of talent out there, players like modric, Bentley, Bilyaletdinov, if blackburn can get santa cruz why cant we be treated to some players like that... for a change.
MON SORT IT OUT YOU JOKER (i love the guy and im not out for him but i fear hes losing the plot)
Oh and i know this is an old one but WHYYYY oh why did we ship off Cahill, he is already twice the player knight is and oh *%&£ it, whos listening anyway

MON is the best man manager in the league, but the worst man finder. Nobody could get more out of these players as they are so average and he has to carry the can for that as he bought the worst ones! I'd seriously consider a director of football as he doesn't have the transfer market knowledge neccesary to improve us.

It was dire, very dire but, this happens from time to time. I think we are better off than the last few years under o'Leary etc. What is bothering me now is the players we're being linked with. Jimmy Bullard for 3M anyone? Oh and a 17 year old who has just broke into Crystal Palaces first team. I really think the club ought to make a statement on how much is going to be invested next season for players, either we got money or we ain't.

i'm sure after coming on here and posting about poor spelling and grammar that the spelling mistake in your comment was on purpose

as for overreaction, i dont think it's an over reaction that people are p**sed off. this is 2 points from a possible 12 after THE CLUB started talking about european football

the club are setting expectations to sell tickets and not delilvering - the supporters have a right to be p**sed offe

on one hand we've got that krulak fella telling us to remember the five year plan and on the other hand we've got martin o'neill telling us there is no 5 year plan - who do we believe?

i've said this now since martin o'neill arrived but he's got long enough from me to make it right - lets just hoe the funds are provided to bring in real quality because the same type of player won't be accepted this summer by some
