Four Aston Villa players in the England squad
Written by Damian

Ashley Young, Gareth Barry, Scott Carson and Gabriel Agbonlahor are all named in the provisional England squad of thirty to face France next week.

It's another provisional squad and on Saturday evening it will be reduced to 23, despite a large chunk of these players playing on Sunday.

There were rumours this morning that Barry was in with a chance of captaining England and while we'll not know for sure until the final 23 is named, I'd quite fancy that going to John Terry or fat Frank.

Beckham has clearly promised something to the FA because he is also named in the squad and will probably get a few minutes to reach his 100th cap. Overall I think he deserves it but it would have been better had he got it on merit.

Let's hope they all get a proper run out this time and that it's a good game, that England win.

Keepers: David James (Portsmouth), Scott Carson (Aston Villa), Chris Kirkland (Wigan Athletic)

Defenders: Wayne Bridge (Chelsea), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), David Wheater (Middlesbrough), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), Matthew Upson (West Ham United), Jonathan Woodgate (Tottenham Hotspur), Glen Johnson (Portsmouth), John Terry (Chelsea), Wes Brown (Manchester United), Joleon Lescott (Everton)

Midfielders: Gareth Barry (Aston Villa), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), David Beckham (LA Galaxy), Jermaine Jenas (Tottenham Hotspur), Owen Hargreaves (Manchester United), Joe Cole (Chelsea), Ashley Young (Aston Villa), Stewart Downing (Middlesbrough), Shaun Wright-Phillips (Chelsea), David Bentley (Blackburn Rovers)

Strikers: Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Gabriel Agbonlahor (Aston Villa), Michael Owen (Newcastle United), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Peter Crouch (Liverpool), Jermain Defoe (Portsmouth).

Wahoo. Shame it isn't 5 with Curtis out but that's football. Is John Terry official Captain of England? Or will this just be for the France game? I'm surprised to see Gabby still in there with his 0 goals in 3 months but i suppose England are lacking in-form strikers at the moment. Young and Barry to start. Carson to be replacement for James and Gabby for a 45 minute sub.

Can you post up the whole England squad?

you have to hope that 4 will make the final squad. carson will as there are only 3 keepers, barry and young will and agbonlahor made the cut last time before injury. lets hope young starts as he will be a much better player at england level than bentley. the pace and his trickery make all the difference against the crap teams. look at j. cole who has tonnes of skill andhas been one of englands best players in recent time.

funny that the mirror think barry is a contender but you never know. they say he is going to try captains out!!

good for the club - but capello clearly doesnt pick on form - scott carson has been abysmal since the last england game.

I think England are Missing the sheer brilliance and miner's touch of Moustapha Salifou. Give him a couple more years of lighting up the prem with his magestic play and he will be able to play for our glorious nation. 3 lions on the shirt!

7 to be dropped...

Downing... average
Wheater
Upson
Owen
Hargreaves
Crouch?... barely played recently

really not sure on a 7th!... I really hope Gabby gets his chance. He's been poor for us for a while now but he's got goals in him. Think he may do better in an England shirt. We're not too creative though the middle, everything is either long ball getting knocked down by Carew, or balls from the wing. I just think he'd benefit from a better service.

Also, Young has to play. Bentley is over-rated and too slow for the wing and Wright-philips can't deliver a final ball. For me you have to start with Joe Cole and Young. Young can put in a quality ball from either wing and set pieces. I honestly believe he should be one of the first names on the England team sheet. If he only gets 3 minutes again i'll be angry.

And three of the selections clearly out of form. Barry is having his worst spell ever for the Club, Carson has been average and Gabby seems to have lost his touch completely.

Would be good to see Ashley play with some quality midfield ball supplied. A little taster of next season when we get our midfield maestro in.

"Villa_Rules" what are you on about? how does Gabby not deserve a chance to play for his country? He's had a couple of bad games don't over react. And as for people saying he should be dropped in the next game is just stupid, keep getting on at him and were loose him cuz he'll f**k off to Man u and be brilliant while were still be hovering in midtable cheering on Harewood.

I can see where villa_rules is coming from on gabby, I suppose on current form you probably wouldn't pick him but he deserves his chance over the season, and I think that apart from rooney, england are in the s**t for strikers anyway cos crouch ain't the answer, andy johnson is crap and owen has lost it now. which probably only leaves gabby and defoe.

i seen kevin keagan speeding down the coventry road the other night, apparently he will do anything for 3 points

our players going out on international duty is wrong in my opinion we have a small enough squad as it is and with 4 of our players possibly playing if one of them pick up an injury we are screwed (except for carson)

gabby is lucky to get a call up i agree with villa rules. i reckon its prob just because he missed out last time.
he has only scored what 6 goals this season guys and has played virtually every game.
if owen, defoe, rooney, crouch, even johnson had played that many prem games they would all have nearer 20 than 6.
