Posting about the new right back for next season and the fact we need at least two of them got me to thinking about how many players we need for next season and it's actually surprised me quite a bit.

I reckon we need at least ten new players if we're to kick on and compete with the likes of Liverpool and Everton and probably Spurs.

Mellberg, Sorensen and Moore are off, so that's four if you count the two right backs. Berger is probably gone, Curtis Davies is going to be out for a while and with Carson only on loan, something has to happen in those two positions too.

Those seven players would pretty much mean we'd be breaking even on numbers, so you've got to fancy those players are in the bag or at the very least lined up. It's not as if this will be coming as a surprise to anyone at the club.

But we've also got to look at strengthening and kicking on and to do that, in my opinion, we need a new striker, a central midfielder, cover for Bouma and another winger that can adapt and play on both sides.

When you look at it that way, the number ten isn't actually that big a number, but it is going to mean a lot of work for Martin O'Neill as soon as the season comes to an end. Or does it mean, that we now need someone at the club to go get these players based on a list provided by Martin O'Neill?

I won't go into that, or how that should work just yet, but some would say it's becoming clear that Martin O'Neill can't do everything - a possible reason why Richard FitzGerald left maybe?

Anyway, to the players we need. We can't continue to play with Barry and Reo Coker in the middle of the park. We need an attacking central midfielder of real quality. It has to happen if we're to move forward because we're too easy to break down at the moment.

I'm not sure which one will lose out but look at the top four; they've all got midfielders in double figures already and I know I'm stating the obvious but Reo Coker and Barry will never get it as defensive midfielders.

To the strikers. I want Gabby to prove me wrong about putting him on the bench but he's had 32 chances this season and only scored seven times.

Now, you could say that the chances haven't been created for Gabby but they have and you've also got to ask your strikers to create there own sometimes, especially with his pace. He has had all season and while we're all hoping for it to happen, if it doesn't, can we afford to waste another season with 16 goals from 57 appearances (goals and appearances combined for Carew and Gabby).

I want Gabby to prove me wrong on this, I really do, but I'm also all for going out and buying the fire-power and consistency. We've also been here before, remember Vassell?

Carew has scored nine from 25 this season and on that form you'd expect him to get fourteen a season. For his role that's a pretty impressive return and if he could stay injury free you might even hope he could get close to 20; pretty impressive for a big man.

An additional winger is also important but you're probably thinking I'm getting greedy. However, I've got a feeling Maloney is off this summer, back to Scotland, so a replacement for him will also be very important and expected.

Anyway, six to break even, eight to beef up and ten or more to kick on. One thing is sure, it has to happen this summer and it can't all happen in the last week; expect signings quite possibly days after the season is over.

So the question is, how many players do you think will be coming in next season?

everyone is getting on gabbys back for not scoring many goals, but this is only his second season as a pro, look at rooneys first 2 seasons at everton 67 games - 15 goals, gabbys is 76 games - 17 goals, quite a similar record.

He scored : 9 goals in 34 matches in his last season at Everton 11 goals in 29 matches in his first season at Man Utd It wasn't until his 4th prem season that he started bagging 14 goals in the premiership so i think this is a totally unfair weight being put on Gabby. He does have potential but let's not weigh him down with it. He's not the same player as rooney, he's a different sort altogether. In my opinion, i think in the future he has more goals in him than the pie eater.

On the topic of ownership and the possible money issue... Owner Randy Lerner has tons of cash. He pours millions and millions and millions into his Cleveland Browns NFL team. I'd know, I live 40 minutes from there. However, the Browns are HEAVILY supported by a rabbidly loyal fanbase who squirts rediculous sums of money for their tickets. If there's not an enormous following for Villa, and their attendence is quite a bit lower than the top clubs, I can see the wise-spending Lerner being frugal. I tend to believe the issue is more Mr. O'Neill and his tendency to be frugal and staunchly dedicated to acquiring only quality.
