Aston Villa beat Reading and remain in sixth place
Written by Damian
Sunday, 24 February 2008

Goals from Webcam Ashley and Marlon Harewood won it for us today and confirmed 6th place for us, level on points with Liverpool in fourth.

Barry missed a penalty in the first half after knocking the ball a good foot wide of the left stick but right on half time Young was given the ball with plenty of space in the box to smash it home.

Harewood replaced Shaun Maloney mid way through the second half and he scored on the counter attack as Reading seemed to just push more and more people forward during the second half.

Overall it was a solid display. We dealt with almost everything Reading threw at us and did it professionally. They scored from a free kick with pretty much the last touch of the game, in what some might say was something Carson should have dealt with, but it's three points and well deserved.

On the upside, after my Arsenal bets lost yesterday I put a tenner on Liverpool, Portsmouth, Wigan, Manchester United and us to win - it pays £131.52 - so my figure to the right is getting better.

I've also had a fiver today on Bolton and Aberdeen which would pay £59.06 and a fiver on Aberdeen, Osasuna and Real Valladolid which would pay out £90.56 - so by the end of the day I could be in very positive figures.

I'm not sure if there is a match report coming or not for this, but if you have a mini one, you can use the comment form below or pop into the forum.

I'm glad to see another win against an opponent that Villa should beat. How did Maloney play?

Job done. We needed the 3 points today.

It's a shame about the penalty miss and the late goal conceded, as we'd have only been 1 goal behind Everton on goal difference, but we're closing that gap slowly but surely.

Now let's hope for a Chelski win in the cup today.

i dont understand what you've posted but i was referring to my arsenal bets yesterday

but seeing as you're so quick to jump on something when you see a mistake (published for less than 3 minutes when you send in your comment) yes i do complain when commercial sites make mistakes - this is a blog - it's not the official club website - which is still crap, it's a blog - and if this blog wants to make a mistake, it has permission

in defence for TheGreatDando he did post so quickly after initially publishing that he got my first draft - without any links or spelling errors so it did initially say after arsenal lost - but by the time his comment was published it was fixed

yeah but is it a blog about damian or the villa, really not interested in betting just the villa, c'mon 3 points!

decent performance loving some of the solid tacklin goin on (bouma davies coker). harewood excellent goal, starting to like him alot. Altho a shocking miss ala gary parker stylee.

would like to see gabby keep his mouth quiet. had a go at both carew and harewood, which they clearly didn't appreciate.

Happy days tho, expected a top 8 finish but europe in any capacity would be friggin excellent

loved to see the Hare score. MON has brought a new optimism in, one where we should be walking away with 3 points to the likes of Reading. Thought Hunt for them had a great game for the first 70 mins and was worried he was going to score. Did not see anything off Doyle today and wasn't we linked with him?

Overall 3 points deserved.

Release the Hare and he will score( stole that line from my old man)

good performance. front 4 looked v dangerous and Marlon when he came on. fancy us to get something away at Arsenal.
Only negative was Carsons performance again. spilled far to many balls and just doesnt look confident at all. lack of concentration for their goal as well.

I might be going too far but i think that performance had a quality about it that shows our desire to move on. True, the pressure was on Reading to win, and it's also just the type of game that could have seen us draw/lose and slip back only to slug it out it with ManC/Portsmouth.

However, we created a shed load of chances. The WHOLE team defended well - including our midfield/forward. All this set piece talk they keep mentioning on Sky is utter crap, we do have real skill and quality about our play. Bouma and Harewood, Carew look fitter and faster than ever (investment in B.Heath facilities now paying dividends!). I think the whole team is improving in its standard of football at a more consistent and confident level. No, bad first half, good second today. We want to stay with those competing for a top four place and show that we can face that pressure, jut like we did today.

gutted spurs have just won. they are in Europe and if the Mancs and Chelski draw each other in the semis of the facup we have to finish 5th just to get Uefa.

Excellent result. The sort of game you have to be able to go and win, and Villa showed they were up for it.

Going to be a very tight 11 games to the end. Getting a result at Arsenal would be massive, obviously.

MON is going to have a difficult decision with Harewood. He's making a very good case for himself. I'm happy to see him keep coming off the bench to change games in our favor, but at the rate he's scoring now, Gabby has to feel some pressure. Be interesting to see the side MON puts out at the Emirates. A fresh Harewood, full of attitude, coming on with 20mins or so really does present a problem to defenders who've been coping with Villa's pace all day. Not saying he doesn't deserve a start now, but like most everyone else, I wonder if he would be as effective in the starting 11. Only one way to find out, of course.

Good performance from the boys, disappointed with Barry's performance mister consistant, not so consistant. But still can't have a good game every game. Upset Salifou didnt come on and that oneil didnt give that reading player a right hook.

We looked good today...not sure whether that was because Reading lacked the quality to hold on to the ball, but we popped it around nicely. I was particularly pleased with Craig Gardner...sure he's not the defender that will keep tight and not get beaten easily, but played some nice balls today, kept the ball on the deck and got the ball down the wing nicely. Mellberg gives us greater security but nothing much in attack. Carew was ever infuriating as always. At times he looks immmense and pracitcally indepsensible, and at others, just frustratingly slow and lacking any kind of touch. And of course, the Hare. I think he's been fantastic for us, happily getting on with his job and actually providing a lot of quality off the bench. Is he deserving of a first team spot? I'm not sure. He's got a lot of attributes, but are those attributes better served as an impact player? It seems so.

I thought Hunt was a long-haired s**tbag. Possibly a c**t. Good thing Salifou didn't come on or else we would have won 37 million - nil.

Scarewood was freakily good other than his glaring miss. Gabby was welcomed back and did us proud with his crazy telepathic link with Ash.

Big John had a decent game, plays well with everyone that lad. Wilf did alright on the left again, Gardner proved to be useful on the right but my main concerns lie in Davies' bed. He did well keeping them out but threw a lot away, bit shaky that man. Yeah he's only 22 but he was easily rocked by the sub-par Reading attack.

Ash played his role, l'al Shawn did well until Marlon came on. Nice to see MoN switch the impact players. Still think Gabby needs a final quarter running role though. Leave him lone man with Carew behind him and we're set.

Reo worked hard, I'm not going to mention Barry because he was that AVERAGE and missed a pen. I want to see Osbourne rock our midfield. If Gardner can't get a midfield spot then Isaiah must have something going for him. Salifou, Delfouneso and Forrester are the future!

I thought we were pretty brilliant today. Enjoyed the game alot more than the cup final with the stupid spuds winning. Gret goal from Ashley, and super sub Marlon getting on the score sheet!

Carson? Shoulda held that last free kick but I do like the guy just dont know about paying like over the odds for him..

The defence, I thought were fantastic, Gardner useful at right back nd played some good stuff. Davies & Lauren, solid. Bouma some good tackles.

Maloney did well for the time he played. Coker, thought he went quiet for some of the second half. Gareth, some nice passes nd thought he was alright & Ashley, great as usual.

Good to see Gabby back in action, played well today. Carew is infuriating, I mean is he quick or is he slow? Really inconsistent.

I do like the looks of Isaiah Osbourne though I reckon he could be good, and wonder if we have any chance of seeing Delfounso anytime this season?

Anyways up the Villa...

Centre mid play-making?

Nothing worth while happened through the middle. Full backs feed wings or the boys up front. What was that Barry performance all about? He didn't seem to want the ball.

Barry was terrible today, not just the penalty either. Silly back pass almost cost us a goal. Carson has terrible positioning for a keeper, i say hes not a keeper, send him back to Liverpool. Gardener tried hard but he got caught out many times by players on a very average Reading outfit. It infuriates me to no end that we dont have a legitimate right back, still....Carew was a man amongst boys again, Reo Coker looked quite strong, not the most accurate passer though! Massive game again this week, get in there boys!

why not cadbury?

Great result and probably our best attacking performance of the season. 21 shots on goal away from home - enough said. The front four were class and Reo-Coker seems to have improved his passing bigtime. John Carew was absolutely awesome.

On the negative side though, stupid chelsea have made our route to europe so much harder. Gardner, whilst being ok, lacks the pace to make the bigtime. Carson was very very poor - should have saved the goal, is as timid as a mouse, 0 communication and cant hold on to the ball. I dont think we should sign him.

Good solid performance, keep it up lads! Carson looked very dodgy yesterday and has done on quite a few occasions recently. I know it looks like we will probably sign him at the end of the season, but M.O.N should keep his options open and keep an eye out for keepers that maybe on the market if Carson doesn't end up at Villa. Does anyone remember Steve Mandanda, who was on trial at Villa? He's turned out to be a very good keeper at Marseille. Carson should not be the 'be all and end all' in terms of signing a keeper.

Great to see Marlon grabbing a goal and what a great finish it was too!

Carson is a donkey, just from watching the clip posted on this page you see how many times he spills the ball, on another day with a better team that could have cost us another couple of goals. He's no better that Stuart Taylor who I would personally like to see in the side and given a chance, I would think a fair few strikers would fancy themselves again Carson with free kicks, he is clueless with his positioning.

On another note, we looked so much better without Petrov, and were a threat going forward all match. I t seems like there are a few players on the fringe being readied for a chance in midfield. I think come summer he's going to have a look at the right and left side of midfield and obviously the right back. I hope we can bag a better keeper though as Carson's not doing us any favors. Great to see Marlon getting a goal, I can see him playing in that super sub role for a while, it's working and Solskjaer made a career out of that at Man Utd. Other positives were Gabby, seems like a rest did him good, Ashley Young was fantastic and I also thought Carew had a good game.

Very impressed with the forward line and should have scored more goals. Terrible penalty miss by barry but gladly it didn't cost us the game.
I also think Carson should have done better with the Shorey freekick and whilst i believe age is on his side, i still think 10 mill would be better spent elsewhere, 5 mill would be a fair price for the player.

I dont want MON to sign Carson, he would be a complete waste if money. Taylor is a better keeper than him and should get a run in the team..

How Bullard can score a fk down the center of the goal, and then shorey's s**te freekick yesterday goes in, along with all the handling mishaps during the game!

Send him back to Anfield...

Besides that, good performance, p**sed myself laughing a Harewoods shot that hit the corner flag and then a great fininsh for his goal...

Deserves a starting spot... why isnt routledge on the bench? He's surely fit enough for 15-20 mins as a sub?

carson has had a few mistakes but he is young, and the freekick at the weekend as a quite good freekick in my opinion, i dont think carson is worth anywhere near 10mil more along the lines of 4-5mil, but if were to pay 10mil for him id rather buy Green from west ham, as he would fit with MO'N type of player and in my opinion should be england number 1, but i have a funny feeling that we are going to sign robinson

Damian, are you still keen on getting Barry out of centre mid?I'm suprised you weren't flagging this one up after Sunday.

I thought, other than the Carson issue and Gardner's positional play, that this was the major issue from Sunday. We need a playmaker who constantly wants the ball and can see where it needs to go next. NRC needs someone easy to give it to.

What is wrong with signing carson this lad has got years ahead of him and could be our keeper for the next ten years if not longer to find a goalkeeper as young as him with the same experince and class will be difficult i say sign him just because he has got years and years ahead of him

I think Barry's performance was average but I wouldn't say it was terrible. Yeah he missed a pen and almost cost us a goal which, on paper, is a bad performance, but I still wouldn't say he was particularly bad. Wasn't his usual self though, I'll admit that.. I'm just thankful we don't have players like Nicky Hunt. Or big-gob James Harper..

I don't mind Reading as a football side, but I really think they will go down this season. I'd much rather Fulham and Bolton went down with Derby because they are awful to watch, but judging by yesterdays performance - and to say they were at home as well - they were definite Championship material.

I've seen Harewood play like that before at West Ham. He seems to have one good game and will then do nothing for the next five, so let's not expect much against Arsenal.

Liverpool 1-0 down at half time (draw 2-2), Newcastle 1-0 (win 4-1) forget fulham and blackburn. What's MON's secret? MARLON!!!, he has been quality (apart from the spurs game)he has scored three goals in something like 210 minutes so that's a goal a game if he had played 70 minutes. I have'nt seen someone come off the bench and play with that desire for a long time. IMO he deserves to start with carew against arsenal with gabby on the right. I think marlon may turn out to be a snip if he continues this form, he a typical MON signing and I think routledge could be the same! Well done Marlon! Well done Villa!

Villa_rules. The problem with Carson is simple. he is a very poor keeper. He cant hold onto any ball, always taking 2 attaempts, he gives very little confidence to the back 4 and his positioning is terrible.
I am sorry but signing him for 10 million wont happen. MON has surely seen his performances and wont pay that. IMO Taylor is a better keeper anyway.
