Darren Bent, a flag and Martin O'Neill off to Liverpool
Written by Damian

Everything apart form the flag is a rumour and if you didn't already know, the club did try their best at getting us all excited, the Holte End is going to have a pretty big flag to play with on match days.

It's a really lovely flag. It has squares, which seem to now be part of the branding on the website and I'm sure represent something from our history, the badge is on it and it's claret and blue. I'm sure everyone in the Holte End will have lots and lots of fun with it.

Away from news for a minute and it appears that Martin O'Neill is the favourite to take over from Rafa at Liverpool. Now, I don't want to take the Michael too much but they're only one place above us on the same points - why would a manager go to a club like that with owners who clearly have no idea?

Martin O'Neill isn't going to go to Liverpool with those two in charge. Put your money on Rafa getting the sack, which will be wrong in my opinion, sure, but not on Martin O'Neill taking over.

Lastly, Tottenham Hotspur's Darren Bent is the £10mn. summer target for Martin O'Neill according to FansFC.com. There are no quotes and I'm pretty certain it's made up. Someone woke up after having a dream about Darren Bent, which in itself is strange, then looked at which managers are likely to have money in the summer and he put two and two together to get nine.

Darren Bent is a good player, but I don't see Martin O'Neill going for him. I may be wrong, it has happened before, but I'd be very surprised if this happened.

If the DIC rumours were true, then there is a possibility that O'Neill is interested.

It obvious that nobody wants him to take the job but is it that much of an unattractive offer, I'm not so sure. The lure of Liverpool is still a Massive pull and if it comes up I would be a little worried. I think although the club is having somewhat of a crisis it's still a huge opportunity for any manager and it's even more attractive than the England job which seriously concerns me. In saying that the working relationship O'Neill has with Learner and the way the club is moving is certainly an extremely important reason to stay at Villa and I suspect that stability is the most attractive thing to O'Neill at the moment especially with regard to his personnel life. I think this rumor and O'Neill's reaction will only help push us into Europe, the England situation had a massive effect on the Moral of the team and I think this will be the same.

MON has put a firm structure in place at the villa and is still building on it, if he went to pool he'd have to do the same again the amount of dead wood they have there is incredible, Aurelio, Kuyt, Voronin, Pennant, Riise, Arbeloa, Itandje are all UEFA cup players, they don't belong at a big club like liverpool. MON would have to start from scratch with a board - Untrustworhty American types / Dubai INVESTMENT capital - that has no track record whereas at the villa MON and Lerner are building what is known in American sports as a DYNASTY!

I think its wishfull thinking to believe that the MONster would not be interested in managing Liverpool. Any manager with ambition would have to think seriously about rejecting Liverpool..

I would be very happy for Villa to sign Bent - a much better signing than Defoe would have been - in my opinion.

eoin - Liverpool fan ?. What ambition is in Liverpool that Villa can't match in a couple of years time ? Because from what i'm seeing Villa are alot more stable financially and have better board that's not constantly linked with selling. If any manager has ambition it's to take team and make them something great like Mon's doing at Villa.

MON wont go to Liverpool, he'll wait for the Man u job to come up and the day he leaves us we're finished!

Vijay I also think the only job MON would take is Man Utd and even though I'd hate to see it we're not finished without him.

Chrisodon said:

Course we're not finished without him he's just doing his job well that's all. There's plenty more fish in the sea. I Wouldn't want him to go but Villa were here before he was and WILL be here after he eventually leaves.

Chrisodon,
I was just trying to be realistic. Liverpool are a massive club, huge fan base, attract much more media attention and have a prestige associated with them that cannot be matched in the UK - and no I am not a fan!! Anybody with ambition to manage a top european side would have to think seriously about not taking a job that huge.
The MONster is doing an unbelievable job with Villa and long may it continue - but right now you cant say that its a bigger job than liverpool....
It can only be a compliment to Villa that he is linked with such positions. DOL anyone???

Chrisodon said:

I Wouldn't say they're a massive club, Massive is teams like man yoo, real madrid & ac milan. But they've got prestige i'll give you that any team that wins the european cup 5 times deserves a pat on the back, In terms of fans they're only bigger because of the Champions league and the press that's associated to it you've just got to look at celtic for that big fish small pond but known around the world. Liverpool have never been the club that alot people think they are title chasers and have a given right to win things, they've holed themselves in top 4 and now clubs below have more money and better players the pressures starting to tell on them.

"Bigger job" liverpool is a very very big job but not in the sense you mean. It will take years to sort it out and thats once the owners are sorted one way or another. Players need to go and some need to be brought in. Never really thought a worse management position could come up after the newcastle mess but once agian liverpool are about to top a league, the league of pantomime shows. Or is that the "i came fourth almost champions league" PS good luck for tonight, and keep way from MON, or my dog will get a right kicking smilies/wink.gif UTV

I'm gonna be bold - I don't think there is any job Martin O'Neill would take right now. Why would he want to replace Sir Alex? The only way is down. The only slight attraction in Liverpool is that they're under performing and he could sort them out.

But really, MON wants to prove himself by being at a club for the long term, making an average team great. There's 0% chance he would leave Villa for any other job. He proved that when he refused England.

VILLA82 said:

We wouldn't find a replacement as good as him thats for sure but i dont think he'll go to a club in the hands of owners they have, as big as Liverpool are. Fergie said it the other day, it's all about the people your woking for and with. MON will be a legend at Villa no doubt about that making an average team great again and for these reasons i think and hope he will stay. In MON we trust!

Mickey, I liked your flag as well. They just got no idea! Bent would come good under MON. I agree with PJ and others; why would MON leave so soon after starting a massive project? Also, look at the reported relationship with RL, would he be able to relate to 'Pools current or possible next owners in the same way? I would think that after majoR succcesses at Villa MON will end up at one of the super clubs on the continent; Barca, Real, Bayern or Madrid. Think like him: what's next?

I dont think martin would want to work for the deadly combernation of hicks parry and gillett.. Darren bent is not worth 10million all tho for 5million i reakon he would be worth it

I like the flag ok i wanted the one with the lion but this one will do i suppose lol

And yes i agree Rafa will get the sack if he loses the champions leauge game tonight then that will be the final straw expect to see torres and alonso to follow

Nothing to be gained by MON at Liverpool. I agree that he would only go to Utd and then only when he feels he has achieved what he wanted with us. Liverpool need to reevaluate who they think they are. They are now one of the chasing pack and at present not even the best of the chasers. Rafa is doing OK, he will be sacked this season because of misplaced expectation.
Will it help us if they lose tonight and he is sacked? Do we want them in the Champions League and preoccupied with that or out and in chaos?

Can't see MON going to Liverpool, maybe if Ellis was still in charge it would be different with compensation etc. Let Liverpool worry about Liverpool. A contentious point here, why would the union jack be seen as offensive??? Its the british flag and Villa are a british club what is your point flowershop boy, are you some tree hugging lily livered hippy by any chance??? Don't like the heat then get outta the kitchen!

The lion on the badge is the lion of St Andrew isn't it? I'm not scotish and it doesn't bother me, but I know lots of people don't like national symbols being used in football.
I for one liked Mickey boy's design but wouldn't want anyone offended by the flag.

I am an irish VILLA supporter and was merely trying to say that realistically MoN would be tempted by the Liverpool job - i am not saying he would take it. I also think it would be a better job than the united one!!! Whoever takes the united job next will have a poisoned chalice and be compared to fergie and live under his shadow - similar to when schmeichal left. Liverpool on the other hand are also a big club but in a bad state (similar to villa when MoN took over).
I also agree that the Villa flag should have no national symbols.

Finally, I live in sweden now and have seen a lot of Zlatan - lets sign him cause he is pure gold!!!

Don't understand all the stick the Liverpool board get. What have they done wrong, other than persist with Benitez? He's spent 50m on players this season. 17m on Mascherano!!!! Don't think MON will go there though.

I wouldn't say there is no chance at all of MON going to Anfield, but it would surprise me a little. He might have turned down England, but that is a totally different situation. Managing a national side is so much different to a club side. I agree with eoin, anyone would have to think carefully if given the offer of the Liverpool job. Fair enough we may be having a good season but we aren't as big as them.

The reason it would surprise me however, is that I think MON had his sights on staying at Villa Park for a while, giving enough time to build a UEFA Cup and Champions League. It all depends. I think there are probably more reasons for him to stay than to leave, all I'm saying is that I personally wouldn't blame him for at least considering it.

liverpool is a bigger job, not neccesarily better though, the owners are tools and the fans love rafa

the question is this - is challenging for the CL and the prem a better job than trying to break into the top 4? id rather have the relatively stress free villa job

dont get suckered in with these crap rumours like satch said he didnt take the england job and thats easy money dont forget we were in the s**t when he came in and now were flying he's building a future here weve got a billionaire chairman who spends his money on the team and buildings not chairmen that are in it for a quick buck like liverpools. on a lighter note i voted for the flag with the cups on it, but its gonna create a carnival atmos with a flag so i dont care which one they use, but why would anyone be offended by an english flag??? forgive me if im wrong but isnt villa an english club? its only politically correct idiots who think people are offended. i love my country and i love the villa forever. The problem Liverpool fans have with the board is the fact they approached Kilinsman whilst Rafa was still in charge and have re-financed Liverpool to buy the new stadium.
