Wasn't going to talk about it: Wayne Routledge leaving Spurs for Villa
Written by Damian
Wednesday, 30 January 2008

It's still speculation, until the club confirm it, but Sky Sports understand that Wayne Routledge is having a medical at Villa today and if they think that, they're probably spot on.

In fact, we'll probably see him in the shirt on Sky Sports before we do on the club site - but I'm walking away from that now.

Routledge began his career at Crystal Palace and on his debut scored after one minute. This probably alerted Spurs who signed the youngster but unfortunately he broke his foot on his debut and has only played a handful of games for Spurs in three years.

He has spent time on loan at Fulham and Portsmouth and at 23 years old is exactly what Martin O'Neill likes to buy. Let's hope, if this rumour is true, Martin O'Neill can develop this player, like I mentioned earlier.

We know nothing about length of contract or possible fee but no doubt one of you will comment on it later if it turns out to be true.

I beleive he may turn out to be a decent acquisition. He'll be pretty cheap and if MON can get the best out of him then he may well turn out to be a decent signing. He'll never be another Ashley Young tough.

He was pretty highly though of when at Palace but he went to the players graveyard that is Spurs so he could be anything and O'Neil will bring the best out of him if theres anything there

Routledge is not another Ashley Young..Ashley Young is a tryer,if he fails he will go back and try again,Routledge is more static player,he is not so mobile and if he gives the ball away he will give up and you wont see him rest of the game.

Harry Redknapp is a wheeler dealer and if he did not want to sign the boy then i dont think he is up to scratch.

Routledge is a Championship player.Premiership defences are too quick for him..He is not that quick unlike some individuals suggest.

He needs a lot of fitness work, motivation, confidence boosting which makes me think if Martin O`Neil cant do no one else can.Besides i think he is very cheap and well worth the risk,if it comes of Villa have a bargain,if not they can get their money back from a championship club anytime.

Good luck to the boy.

Paul is right - MON took Steve Guppy from Non-league football to the England team.

No doubt that Routledge has potential, it's just whether he can reach it or not. MON is the best man to do it.

I might be on my own here but I'm quite pleased about this one, I've spoke before about how un-ballanced I feel our midfield is so this signing is a step in the right direction to sorting that issue out!

The lad has got some pace and much quicker feet than Ash Young (although not half the player), he'll cause problems and more than likely create a similar buzz when on the ball as Ash Young.

He'll need encouragement from us though as I'm led to beleive he is a confidence player, so lets all get behind the kid and see what he acan do!

Welcome abourd Wayne.

We all agree that we desperately need some width on the right of midfield, and Routledge will supply it. A sensible, rather than stunning signing - but at least the areas that need patching up are being addressed.

Joke!!, What the hell has happened to all this money we have got. He couldn't make it at Spurs,Pompey and Fulham. Why do we always go for failures,Zat Knight couldn't do the job at Fulham so we have him. I really really hope Wayne Routledge proves me wrong, doubt it though. Come on Martin get the cheque book out, i don't believe theres nobody out there, every player has his price. We are in a strong league position and i would hate to see all this good work go down the pan if we don't bolster the side, have injuries and fail to qualify for Europe by a single point, that in my eyes would be unforgivable.

Everyone still reckons we can sign anyone cos we're in a good position, nonsense, we have no guarantees at this club and before we can get the real top players we have to show we can maintain ourselves in europe for them to come.

We are still in the transitional stage, we aren't there yet!!

Routledge would be good in my opinion, natural wide man and he's the type of player MON buys, he'll do well for us cos MON will tell him what he needs to be told.

Good shout on the Guppy to England, who would of said when MON took over that within 2 years we would expect to see 4 Villa players in the next England Squad!!

Seen on another post that someone was slating why we're aparantly looking at Brad Guzon, Carson not definately signing and Sorenson off in the summer, that could leave only Taylor!

He'll be an interesting addition to the squad in a position where we're severely lacking. If MON can get the best out of him great; if not, it won't be a big loss.

On the other hand, I agree with Damian, let's five him a chance. Even though he may not be a signing that anyone was anticipating, I hope he does well if he comes in. We do need a proper right winger..

Routledge had promised to break into the big time but fell out of favour due to injury and change of management. He is only 23, MON is only starting the second season of reconstruction! I would bet this guy will be taken under the wing, given the AVFC NEW ETHOS, and encouraged to believe he can suceed as a player in the top flight.

Remember this is a five year plan and it took Fergie four years to win anything when he arrived at OT.

Routledge will be a good signing, when playing for Palace he supplied 8 assists, basically creating all the hype about andy johnson as apart from all those penalties he scored a lot of his other goals thanks to wayne's right boot. He's far quicker than petrov and will give us a threat on both flanks. He'll be cheap and he only got ousted from spurs team due to him getting injured and so lennon brought in and seemingly wont be dropped despite having a fairly quiet second season. Acute business from MON mark my words.
