Stupid statement of the week: It's today or tomorrow
Written by Damian

I'm not going to talk about the impending transfer of Gary Cahill to Bolton or God forbid any other team, or the rumoured interest in Spurs right back Pascal Chimbonda. I'm also not going to talk about us getting a fourth goalkeeper.

It doesn't matter which players come in - Martin O'Neill will get in who he wants to get in and he'll be doing it for whatever reason - long term or short term.

O'Neill will bring someone in to do a job; look at the Chris Sutton and Didier Agathe transfers as examples. They were never brought in for the future, simply to do a short term job. Look at Ashley Young and Nigel Reo-Coker; they were brought in as part of the bigger picture.

Martin O'Neill is fully aware of what is achievable this season and while it may be ahead of schedule he'll want to finish in a European spot if possible and he's working 20 hour days trying to get everything to fall into place.

What we do know, is that Martin O'Neill makes average players good and good players great so if we end up with two or three average players, they should become good and if we end up with a good player or two - hell, they could turn out to be great.

Imagine if we get the perceived superstar player - imagine what Martin O'Neill could do for him!

Anyway - they'll be talk today about why Richard FitzGerald has left. We don't know the reasons yet and if I was Richard FitzGerald I'd be putting my family on a flight and going for a few weeks holiday in South America or somewhere warm this time of year. I think we're going to have to let the dust settle before we find out about this.

Most important thing right now is the game this weekend. We need three points at Fulham and I've got every confidence in our squad - especially after watching Fulham last night. The icing on the cake would be that superstar player though.

Thank you Damian. I was much happier to read this than another stupid Guzan, Chimbonda, Routledge, and more than anything a stupid Cahill rumor. Sick of those. I do however, like seeing the optimism that I try to radiate off of myself. Should be an exciting two days! Cheers.

at last a rational voice amongst all the doom and gloom. why do people forget how excited we all were when mon took over and if you were told we would be fifth in the league then you would have thought it was crazy talk. mon is a great motivator and always gets the best out of players. so come on villa remember the odreary years. mon will sign players who share his vision for the future and want to wear the claret and blue with pride. utv. smilies/smiley.gif

Reo-Joker is not the future. Can't Tackle, can't Pass what does he do?

jinksy .. we'll have to agree to disagree on the reo-coker thing

at 23 (i think) years old, he's still got a lot of development to come and he's only going to get better .. i know i harp on about this but when he has a real attacking and creative midfielder in the middle with him - we'll see him kick on

It is a silly statement to say imagine if Matin O`neil gets a star player and what he can do with him.

Martin O`Neil never buys star names because he cant handle them ,just like George Graham used to buy relatively less known but harder working individuals.

Martin O`Neil is not big enough manager to buy star names..Woodgate is the latest example of it..No matter what he achieves and how greater levels O`Neil can take Villa he will never have the charm and personality to attract those big names.

You give choice to any big player to sign for similar teams like Newcastle,Spurs,Villa,Man City or Everton ,big name player will chose Spurs and Newcastle ahead of the others anytime ,all down to their glorified media suppport and in Spurs case also their manager.

Martin O`Neil will go and get some decent or good player and get the very best out of him, just like lesser fashionable of second tier teams Everton,Villa and alike..thats what he is extremely good at and why should he change it?

Appreciate what he is doing..Villa wont get a better man in charge.

Think you guys will be on a winner with routledge. He was desperatly unlucky to have played only three games for us. O'neil will turn him into a great player. He led the stats for most assist the year before he came to Spurs and with the early injury, ( in his first game I think) never got a chance under dickhead Jol.

Think you have a real diamond in the making here guys. With the brilliance of o'neil you might just have a legend on your hands.

Great little player....wish he had more of a chance at the lane.

Good luck to him. Well done on your season so far. coys.

why do villa constantly seem to be buying players who cant get into the teams that we are competing with? first it was west ham now it will be spurs - we should be buying hutton not chimbonda, spurs will no doubt buy a world class winger whilst we opt for routledge
i can see how he'll balance the team but surely there are better options

Routledge is an OK player, skillfull but doesnt run,he just goes past people but cant run with the ball.

He did not get a chance under Jol because in his first game he was injured and Lennon took his place and Lennon never looked back since while Routledge could not be bothered to work hard and get better to win his place back..instead, off he went to be a sub at Fulham.

Martin O`Neil will make something out of him but in all fairness looking at Spurs team in terms of not their league position but individual quality Routledge wont even make the reserve side.

Not a bad player..and it seems like Spurs are about to sign Downing.

KennyM thanks for the heads up. I think it's safe to say he will become a Villa player but why everyones moaning about this guy because he's not starting for Spurs is beyond me. He was always going to struggle to establish himself with Lennon, who I rate highly. But I'll be honest I have never seen this guy play but MON must see something in him and I'm personally hoping he'll give us some extra width.

Totally agree with you Brett. We seem to just take players who can't get on teams that are below us in the league.

Actually mate, Reo-Joker has the best completed tackles/attempted tackles ratio in the Premiership. He might not be too good at passing, but he's bleedin good at tackling.

Ivor, Henrik Larrson was not a big player? Check your facts mate and let's see O'Neils record speaks for itself, I take it you are a Tottenham fan, take a look up at 5th pal where all those non star players live. Berbatov's going to Man Utd at the end of the season and you'll be mid table
