Richard FitzGerald resigns as CEO of Aston Villa

Richard FitzGerald has resigned as Chief Executive Officer of Aston Villa Football Club.

Personally, I don't like this news and think that Mr FitzGerald was making strides in the right direction.

Mr FitzGerald joined in January last year and has made progress off the field and this will come as a shock for us supporters who were more than happy with what he was achieving.

We're not sure of the details yet so we're not going to speculate and we're not sure if he'll be staying on for any period of time or not.

We'll update this post with more news as we get it.

This is not good at all

Is he the person who is supposed to be making all the deals?

If the club announces that we have signed Routledge then I am going home to have a heart attack at the age of 23

lol @ MHeaven, don't worry mate I'm applying for the job and I will buy so many expensive players you won't believe it, we may go bankrupt but it will be fun.

ps all those saying better to be safe about who we buy and the right face, seriously if Randy just started going mental buying like chelsea did, how many of you would honestly not be happy with buying the worlds best? I suppose you have to think what you want to believe what you want. And I am not saying that would ever happen or would be a good thing, just you know FUN

Not happy either, this is not a good step however without the reasons why we should not speculate and just wish him well and thank him for the hard work.

Things are good because the profile of the club is so much better now that it was when MON joined. We are being linked with better players every window-even if we dont sign them!

I wouild like to make the point that the main reason why I go to the villa from Liverpool these days is just to see I.Osbournes face on the big screen when the teams are announced. It is without a shadow of doubt the funniest thing you will ever see. MON please play him at every opportunity.

My mate is O'Neills PA's husband. The story goes that we were close to securing the services of Ronaldinho but would not pay for his full time dentist. Our CEO was pullin out the stops but Lerner would not bank roll the expensive dental work.
This is a true story.

Im more perplexed at the fact that this has happened with only 3 days untill the end of the transfer window, its the timing of it all that makes you wonder that he didnt leave under good circumstances.

The one and only Bill Howell claimed tonight that MON was ready to buy a superstar!!
I wonder if Fitzgerald's resignation was anything to do with this. Maybe he's disagreed with something going on being the scenes or maybe he's messed up a transfer deal...i'd love to know.
C'mon MON...let's have some singings

I would like to see "signings" and not singings as i had previously stated. I thank you ! smilies/wink.gif

It does seem rather odd timing. Most definitely would seem to have something to do with the transfer activity, or lack thereof.

I apologize for my ignorance here, but exactly what is the CEO's role at Villa in between RL and MON as far as signing players goes? Does he have to approve the deals? Can he scupper them?

Is it your opinion, Damien or anyone else, that he's left on his own because the business wasn't getting done, or does it seem more like he was pushed out because he was holding up the business? It would seem to me that the timing and lack of activity point to the latter.

hi kohoutek

the role of the CEO in this instance was pretty much the same as Managing Director - i may be wrong but i think the whole CEO thing is an Americanism - MD works fine for me

FitzGerald was top dog in the business. he had a financial director (CFO) and operations director (COO) and an executive board (advisors/experience)

general krulak has said (notice any trend here) that there is no budget and that all martin o'neill has to do is ask randy and he'll get his support - some quotes from krulak:

1. MON knows Randy will support him
2. he doesn't need to ask the question before the window opens [talking about if there is budget]

general krulak has also said 'he's [randy] not in it for the money' and 'randy is in it for the money' - which one do we believe?

but to transfers - you'd think that if martin o'neill was fully responsible for which players and he only had to go to randy for money - that mr fitzgerald was simply a facilitator in getting the paper work done - so while the timing is a coincidence i don't think it is because of that ...

i dont think he was holding up the business but there is every chance that he wasn't fully aware all aspects (he was only in the job 13 months) - but then he only had to ask and there were people at the club that could assist - the CEO is top dog - he has people, the CFO and COO to jump in an help

timing is suspect, but i dont think we'll ever know for sure why he left. maybe he was promised all these funds to get the business done and he didn't get all teh funds he thought he was going to get? so when he asked for £5mn. to do something - it didn't come ... just a theory, because i don't buy much of what krulak says

Sell Reo Joker & get a decent midfield general who can pass & tackle.

It's just like Ellis all over again our Chairman hasn't spent a single penny of his own money..............Very worrying.
