Tick tock tick tock: Can you feel the anticipation?

There is a lot of talk about which players are coming and a lot of the names getting mentioned are not the quality that Martin O'Neill has talked about, so I'm setting myself up for a surprise or two.

I'm expecting it mostly because this is how Martin O'Neill conducts his transfer dealings and despite the hope that he'll sign a player or two early on in January - we really should know better.

Despite us playing over 10% of the season in January with the small squad Martin O'Neill talks about we've actually done quite well and as I said yesterday - we'd all have been happy with where we are right now, if it was offered to us at the start of the season.

I don't think we were in for Woodgate, as some of the papers are saying and I don't think we're in for Wayne Routledge or Nedum Onuoha, despite all the paper talk. I think we may have a new defender and possibly a midfielder or striker and while the names might not have been mentioned I think they'll be the right type of players to move us forward.

Why do I think this? Well, mostly through hope and optimism but also because January wasn't a surprise to Martin O'Neill; he's known since September where he needs to strengthen and he would have done his homework and had his targets lined up.

So, I'm preparing myself for some news tomorrow or Thursday and while it may only be one or two players I think, if they do strengthen the squad, then we've got to be happy - because right now, it's all about strengthening.

Adding real quality is difficult in January and while it may happen, if enough money is offered, I'm expecting that to happen in the summer.

The names may be a surprise, the numbers might not be what we want but it is happening. There is a wonderful opportunity now to compete for European football next season and it has to be grasped with both hands and most importantly, Martin O'Neill knows this.

We've been led down the garden path when it comes to transfers, it seems we dont have the big money to compete with the likes of Newcastle, Mancity, Spurs and Westham, we were led to believe last summer that we would get quality top class signings and we know what we got!! january is very disappointing upto now, i dont expect anything exciting and the summer will be the same as last, makr my words, but as long as we have sell out crowds at VP thats all the board care about, money suckers from our poor fans!!

We've already signed the most crucial player we needed in this transfer window - Martin Laurson. I guess anything else will be fortune. I get the feeling MON's not getting too far with other options at the moment; lots of striker talk is all well and good but we need a solid right back and a better quality holding midfielder. Another winger would be nice - Gabby is visibly knackered and needs a rest, he hasn't had a good game in the last four or so matches, but who can blame him. I'm getting the same vibe in this window as I did the last one, more going out than coming in. :'(

So the mighty West Ham, Spurs, Man City and Newcastle have signed who this Jan? Every one assumes we're the only club taking our time. Spurs have finally signed a CB even though they've needed one for about ten years! Man City have signed one player on loan. Newcastle and West Ham? Nowt. I keep hear we're being left behind, but by who? The only big business done this window has been by Chelsea (because they're falling behind) and the bottom clubs (who are panicking).

That's more like it Damian. I much prefer your posts when they're positive :)

VijayD, cast your mind back to last January. What a steal and exceptionally good buy Ashley Young has turned out to be, eh?

MON will only buy the right players if they are available. He will not buy if they won't improve the squad. He has said this repeatedly. He will not buy overpriced players with massive egos either. It's as simple as that.
I for one, do not want us splashing cash needlessly and am perfectly happy with the way things are going.
Some people are just never happy.

I can't belive after all of the rubbish that we have seen in recent years, you so called villa fans can't be a little patient with the transfer situation, we all know we need to strengthen and i'm pretty sure O'Neill knows as well. Snapster was right, O'Neill only buys players who want to play for villa, work hard and learn. I can't think of one player O'Neill has signed who has not performed or who is not starting to re-discover their form. Lets wait for the summer and anything by thursday will be a bonus. The money is there, we have the manager, we have the chairman and only glory is in the future, but it will take longer than any true villa supporter would like, but as a villa supporter you have to realise this. Oh yes and come on Laurson.

I am shocked, but have now accepted we are not going to sign anyone. It is going to cost us a place in Europe come the end of the season. The Blackburn game highlighted this for me. Gabby was shattered, Barry didn’t look fully fit, nor did young(especially when limping for the last 15mins), Petrov or Carew. These players need a rest every now and again but we don’t have that option to a severe lack of depth. I am certain we have had to play players this season when only say 80% fit. We have been so lucky with injuries and suspensions. To put us in that position when we rely on luck once is unprofessional, twice will be plain stupidity. By his own admission MON has said if we had had injuries that other teams had we would not have been able to cope. So why risk it twice??? All of you who are saying don’t worry, he knows what he is doing, look where we are in the league etc ---- u wouldn’t be saying anything of the sort if we had had injuries and “hadn’t been able to cope” as he put it. You would all be furious – so why is he putting the club in a position where that could happen???

Ghosthunter
Ghosthunter Wrote: | 19.50GMT | Jan 29, 2008

tonebone - at the end of August loads of people where moaning at the lack of activity and said we'd struggle. It's all well and good saying if we were in a different position we wouldn't be saying this and that, but we're not. We are where we are and still you're moaning.

If you think MON is so dumb that he doesn't know he needs to get some players in your slightly puddled. MON clearly has a way of doing his business and getting the right people in. We may not like it, it may not make the transfer window particularly exciting but it's working, and better than a lot of other teams at the moment.

Just chill out and enjoy it a bit.

Of course i am happy with where we are, but we arent going to have as good a run with injuries as we have had so far. If we dont sign anyone we are going to have to rely on a huge chunk of luck to get into europe.

I can't believe I was ever worried about MON and villa, after reading the insightful comments on here my opinion has changed 180 degrees, I now no longer want any other signings ever because I am told MON is a genius with who we have signed and I would rather the club save money than buy a star player needed or not just to give the fans a little excitement, money in the bank is far more enjoyable. I also stupidly looked forward to european football but apparently I am wrong to want that as we may not do so well and it is far better to not even try and maybe go out than actually enter it. Now I can sit back and laugh at all these silly clubs signing players for money like, Torres, Santa Cruz, Tevez, Anelka, haha suckers, they may win you things and provide excitement but we have money in the bank!

We all did exactly the same last year when it looked like no-one was coming at all. It was only on the last day of the Window we made any signings. By look of Defoes body language against Arsenal he's leaving, Crouchie still may come back, Wright Phillips is a no no now as he's gatting a game but i'd rather be linked to these kind of players than bog standard Championship players. He's just keeping us waiting to the end but i have faith... as someone once said "If you build it they will come"..!!

What's this about "we'll miss out on Europe if we have injuries"? We may have a small squad, but it's still a squad. As I posted elsewhere: we have squad players for most positions; Sali, Maloney, Taylor, Osborne, Harewood... granted that defence is one worrying area. We will be ok, even with suspensions and injuries.

Badger
Badger Wrote: | 22.34GMT | Jan 29, 2008

taglor, how often do you need to be told it's all about availability. MON keeps saying it, so why don't you listen?
Do you seriously think MON isn't trying?
Top players want to go to top clubs and we're not quite there yet.
Top clubs don't want to sell their better players and if they do, they ask stupid money. Despite RLs wealth, I'm sure he doesn't want to spend say, £20mill on a player who's only worth £10mill. I bet MON doesn't either. As has been said, loads of clubs have spent big money and it's been futile.
I'll be very suprised if we get no-one in and if we do get players, I'm sure MON will think they will improve the squad.
After all, he's the only person who counts, regardless of what we think.

So it's not that he doesn't want to, at all.

Then when quizzed next year about European football and the need for further signings, I'd show my empty pockets and say 'whoops, spent the lot sorry'.

All I can say is I'm glad he's in charge of spending and not some of the clowns posting on this site. I'm guessing some of you still spend your week's pocket money on Day 1.

Tonebone, you're absolutely spot on mate. I'm just surprised that an idiot like MON didn't realise earlier that he'd need to buy more players. What a fool he must be!

So, let's send him down to the player supermarket to have a wander round and choose a few gems. I mean, it's not like there will be a queue of other people wanting to buy the best players too, is it?
