Cahill to join Ridgewell at Birmingham City?
Written by Damian

Rumours are rife that Gary Cahill will be off this month and top of that list of rumoured purchasers are Birmingham City, closely followed by Paul Jewell at Derby.

When Ridgewell decided to leave and join Blues I was more annoyed at O'Neill that he'd let a player go that I think has huge potential but this time, while I still believe Cahill has huge potential, I'm not actually that bothered.

I'm not that bothered because if Martin O'Neill doesn't think he's good enough for his plans then so be it - Martin O'Neill is the manager and getting annoyed doesn't do anyone any favours.

Cahill, for me a very good defender, would also probably welcome a move if he thought he was going to get more first team football and 'at the end of the day', it's only a job for him.

Also, if we're to believe that one of these clubs is actually willing to pay £4mn., the price talked about, then it also probably makes sense to do it.

The funny thing is, he'd probably have had more opportunities this season if it wasn't for Laursen playing out of his skin and us having no right back. Still - if he does go, this is paper talk after all, then it will be interesting to watch him progress.

I think he's a better player than Knight and in 2-3 years could be one of the best, but if he is to leave then i pray its to derby rather than small heath.

I dont want anymore of our academy talent being snapped up by that lot

I for one will be sad to see him go. I think he has huge potential. If, as seems more and more likely, Olof leaves at the end of the season, that'll only leave us with Laursen (assuming he signs), Davies and Knight at centre back for next year. I always think you should have at least 4 specialist centre backs in the squad. With Cahill in the mix as well, I think we'd be looking pretty solid in that department.

I want the Midland clubs to be strong. I support The Blues but want Villa W.B.A. etc all to do well. Its great for the local games. What is the point of Our teams being in different divisions.Hope we get Gary .

I think he'd want to stay, but his chances have been much more limited to last season and the season before. Hopefully he'll get some more chances if he does stay, but at the moment it seems he's 4th choice in a group of centrebacks who are immune to injury and fatigue lately.

There's a story on the official site today about how much MON badly wants to keep Laursen, so it looks like we are going to sign him up on a new contract smilies/cheesy.gif

I have to say I'm absolutely delighted because in my opinion, and I'm not being biased just because I'm a villa fan, I think he's the best centre back in the premiership right now.

If Oneil doesnt think he is good enough then fair enough, but we really do need to get in a lot of defenders. Mellberg is off so we would be left with Laursen, Knight, Davis, Bouma and O,hallaran. Imagine a few injuries we would be utterly screwed.
I really dont understand why Oneil has put us in this situation this season. Ok we are doing well and have had few injuries, but if we had had 5 or 6 key injuries like say West Ham we would be down near the bottom of the table. Oneil is lucky we havent but why keep risking it.

I don't want Cahill to go. And I really wish that we still had Ridgewell (instead of Knight).

As much as i love martin oneill i think this would be a huge mistake as i cant work out signing Knight and possibly selling Cahill as Gary is a better player.

I'd like him to stay and progress. If Olly leaves, we'll still have 4 decent centre-backs with Cahill. If Cahill goes too, we'll be thin on the ground.

Well, I'm not bothered to be honest... I'm more worried about the fact that we are now almost half way through Jan and all we keep hearing about is who is f*cking off!!!

I'm fed up of reading about Cahill, Mellberg, Harewood, Laurson, Maloney, and the fact they could all be gone pretty soon! How about getting some fresh faces in, or are we gonna leave it to the last minute again and bring in more squad players like Knight & Harewood. Stop all this pithering and sign the f*ckers up... including Laurson - the bloke was desperate to sign for us before the season started, and now we leave it and he can F**k off for nothing... AND HE PLAYS THE SEASON OF HIS LIFE!!!

AAAAAAGGGGHHHHHHHH!

Not been on here for a while but would just like to say well done to the lads so far this season. just been comparing to last season and we are 13 points better off now than we were this time last season which to me speaks volumes on mon's judgement on all things football, so if he decides to let cahill go then so be it. mon was proven correct with the likes of ridge, davies, samuel, smiler, baros, angel etc. but do agree that we have been lucky with injuries so far. good result on sat played well but one thing that concerns me a little is that everything goes down our left. mon will know this but imo isn't one to buy for the sake of buying. yes to defoe. no to swp as he can't cross a ball. keep reading the rumours but don't care till a press conference has been called. utv.

cahill should stay hes better than knight. and maybe davies not sure yet. i really dont think he will go to blues, he is to good for them. i think he would be good in a mid-table team like west ham or blackburn.

What on earth is O Neill doing ! Yet again he is obviously comtemplating selling the Hero of the 3-1 Defeat of the Scum to the Scum .

I think Martin may be losing the plot a bit here. Gary Cahill was a regular in the Villa lineup last Season and did a fabulous job at the back when Laurson was injured ! I dont think selling him to the s**tsters Small Heath Utd will go down very well among the Villa faithful ! and whats more i bet he would score against us at Villa Park in April ! No Way Martin O'Neill , you dont sell good players to the Scum and then expect not to get stick !

We may all hate Alex Ferguson but at least he did not sell Gabriel Heinze to Liverpool for obvious reasons !! O'Neill take note ! A deffinate no brainer .

We should keep hold of cahill his a brilliant young player how could he show his face at birmingham city after that wonderful over head kick ?

I say we should just keep him out on loan for the rest of this season then for next season try and loan him out to a premership club

As for signing henrik larsson forget it. Can u really see it happening ? I cant

If it was Spurs, Everton, Blackburn, Newcastle, Man City, West Ham sniffing after him then then maybe there would be a case for keeping hold of him. If he is such a huge prospect as people are making him out to be and its going to be a huge mistake to sell him how come the only clubs interested in him are a club thats going to be in the Championship next season and Derby.

A player is only as good as the clubs that are after him and if he is free to leave in the transfer window and out of 20 teams in the Premier League only 2 at the bottom end are after him is he really good enough for the Villa?

I think Cahill's a good player, but he's not even making the bench this season - weve been more than fine without him!! He's obviously not in MON's plan so why not cash in on him. If someones willing to pay £4mill we should go for it and put towards a top class right back.

I think that if all these stories were true then we would sell nearly our whole defence, a lot of it is just paper talk and I can't imagine the smallest squad selling all of these at least not without cover.

MON was right to let Ridge go he will never be a player who would feature in a top 6 side. Cahill has more potential but right now that is what it is. He is not as good as Knight, Davis,Laurson, or Melberg so he is 5th choice and that might not be good enough for him. If Melberg goes and he moves up to number 4 he might stay.

Send him out on loan again, he hasnt proved much yet(or hasnt had the opportunity). Why do we have to make a decision on him right now? Let him learn his craft on loan then if we have an injury or suspension he can slot in. Why the hurry?

if the paper talk is true and we have been offered 4-5 millon for him sell him off to the highest bidder there is suppose to be several clubs intrested so lets take the cash and say thank you very much...cannot be bad for a 4th or 5th choice player even if he has got potential
