| Really boring did we have a shot on goal? Made us look like schoolboys, really s**t effort from villa really disappointed with their lack of effort at least I didn't pay to watch it unlucky who did. Your right Damian and this is what I was worried about start of season, I mean how can you get excited now? what have we got to aim for? Europe maybe but that's not till next season, just fast forward season, we finish top 3rd yaawn and start all over again august. Villa you have been great lately but that was so bad that I would rather watch adverts. really embarrased with my mates again no one takes villa seriously. and it was telling that schmeichel thought carson is s**t |

| Simple as, Utd were always going to win. It's easy saying we should have been more attacking, but when we haven't got anything left in us to attack how can we? Big JC wasn't fit, and i don't usually agree with MON playing him when he's not fit...but if he wasn't there, i don't think the ball would have ever stuck in their half. Luke Moore is far too light weight and doesn't pose any kind of a threat against a team that can defend. I haven't seen any reason to keep him lately. The defence and midfield were pretty decent, but we were understandably tired. And there's plenty more to play for...with FA Cup games to worry about would we be able to keep a push for Europe going? And were we ever going to win the FA Cup in the first place...of course not. |

The better team won no doubt about that, but tactically I think we were poor and we didn't look very confident. We didn't take any chances, if we played the same style of football we had in previous games we may have pulled it off, but instead we played defensive. I can understand why MON would opt for us to play in that manor, but United didn't look at all that threatening till Rooney came on and I think if you're gonna break down a defence of that quality, then you have to give it everything. I just hope next time we meet, that we put the track record behind us. We have to forget about what quality players they have and just play our brand of football, which has been working for us this season to great effect against the likes of Chelsea and very nearly Arsenal. We are a decent side now, there is no reason to totally change our game just because we are playing Man United. |

Some perspective needed here. Just what did Manchester United do for 80 minutes or so? True, we can moan about the performance/ result and wish we could send midfielders bombing into their penalty area for the whole match!! Realistically, where would that have gotten us? I think United knew they had to defend well, and I suppose they did - getting really tight to us, especially Gabby. They were as cautious as us. Carew played but was nowhere ready to and Laursen was great/Davies not bad at all. Petrov had one of those days when he is not certain enough when we have not got the ball. Hargreaves came on and basically stopped us going down the middle in the second half - that was that. Playing teams like these reminds us how far we have got to go to strengthen our squad. To be honest, I couldn't give a stuff that we did not give the BBC their 'glamour' game of the round. I still think we will push ManC and Everton all the way for a UEFA cup place and eventually get one!! Is it six of our players that have played every game so far this season - Melly, Laursen, Gabby, Ash, Barry etc. Bet they wished that they had the opportunity to come off the bench to win it for us. Up the Villa. |

Yes today was disappointing and we are out but we are playing the best team in England if not the world For god sake. Our season is not over. If u think about it it hasnt changed. With the sixe of our squad at the moment a cup run can only hinder us in the league, which is what matters. If we finish 6th with over 60 points(an unbelievable total but looking realistic) then the season is a success. At this moment we are in a great position in the league and dare one say it with another good run could have a chance of grabbing 4th spot with a few games to go. At the start of the season we all knew we wouldnt win the FACUP(no one but the big 4 have for 12 years) so why is are season over because we lose to the probabele winners??? if we were in Newcastles position in the league, which i admit i for one at the start of the season thought we might be, then i could understand this negativity. But we are not - lets get behind the team, beat reading next week, then the liverpool game is absolutely massive!! |

poor effort. y did carew start? he was clearly not mobile enuff to take on their defence. we changed our game plan purely cos it was united. hanson summed it up - the villa that have played excitin attakin football never turned up today. the english players had a chance to impress fabio, n they didnt take it. i thort davies looked quite good today on a positive note. but we were to negative and yet again its ronaldo who does us again. moore looked sharper in his movement then carew did, understandable given his injury, but why start him. havin him start just encouraged us to lump the ball forward and it was all predictable an boring. if moore had started, maybe we'd have played our passin game. but i guess we havent got a big enuff squad to cope wit aimin for europe and challengin for a cup. this has to be sorted. |

Sure, we might have won tonight, but I truly believe we'll go on to win another night. The future is still bright. Utd are still lucky. We'll have our revenge soon enough. |

| Its about whats important and a top 6 finish ia a lot more important than a good cup run. A top 6 finish means you can attract better players, increase merchandise sales, ticket sales, and develop and build the squad. The FA cup no longer has the attraction it used to when I was young. We struggled to fill the ground today and when you look at the other games played today the gates have been appalling. At the moment the cup will be won by one of the top 4. For everyone else its about who needs a cup run for the money and we don't. The objective for this season has not changed and todays result has no bearing on what we all want to achieve. |

We lose to Man U and all of a sudden our season is over? Our form against them is awful, and yes I thought that today might be the game where we started to do something about that but it wasn't to be. I'm also disappointed about the manner in which we lost, seeming to play for the draw. However, we have the smallest squad in the Premier League and it's starting to tell with our players looking tired. Us being out of the F.A. Cup sucks, I love the F.A. Cup, but at least it's less games to tire out the lads or, even worse, for us to pick up some injuries. The focus and objective of thsi season was never to win the F.A. Cup, it was always about nailing a good - hopefully European - place in the League, and that is still very much on the cards, so no, the season is not over. Damian, and everyone else saying that our season is over, let me ask you this: If we manage to sneak fourth this season, will you still say that we haven't achieved anything this seaosn, or that it was 'over' in January? It's a pretty big 'if' I know, but I'd have probably said before the game against Man U that it's more likely than going all the way in the F.A Cup. We're 3 points away, with Liverpool full of uncertainty and you know that when (if?) Man City lose at home in the league that could rock them severely and send them on a blip. Of course, if our season is over we may as well not even try to make those 3 points up, right? |

I think the perspective that the season is over is a pretty pessimistic viewpoint, but one that also shows real passion for the club. What we need to be mindful of is that Villa are a young side on a steep learning curve, and that every game should be cherished as an opportunity to be part of a bigger picture; the development of the club based on prudent investment and strong management, with a core of dedicated fans. I would much rather be in our position as opposed to Chelsea, who see development as plonking 30 million pounds or so down to buy off another team that has put in the hard yards to make a player. Also, if your season ends when you can't win the cups or league, then there are 12 or so clubs that shouldn't have any supporters as they've got snowballs chance of achieving anything from day 1. |

An Aston Villa team doing the best we could to contain the best team in the premiership whilst trying to nick a win. For the best part the strategy worked. Defensively we were very good and Curtis Davis comes out of this game with huge credit. Look at our bench compared to Man U? We had no one they had in excess if £50 millions worth of talent. We had Moore, Ma (lonely), Gardner. We are a team in transition and still two years away from where MON would like us to be. The lads ran their nuts off last night. The effort was there for all to see. So lets not get negative and take the lost for what it is. |

If our season isn't to be over and we are to push for that european spot, then how can we contemplate spending 15 - 20 mil on a defender, we need that type of money spent on our forward players, we should be looking for someone that can create something in the last third, for that money we should be able to buy a player that can turn a game, and please someone that can pass the ball on the ground to one of our players. I'm dissapointed but still optomistic for the rest of the season and clinching a sport in europe, COME ON, UTV... |

I'm disappointed the way we conceded the first goal - it was sloppy after we defended so well for the first 80 minutes. We came close to getting a result. Had we been more gung-ho, we'd have gotten stuffed like we did earlier in the season. We don't have a Rooney to bring on and change the game, yet. Gabby needs to learn to play off Carew more effectively - getting on the ends of his flick-ons. I was impressed with Reo-Coker and Curtis Davies. Carson looked shaky and Bouma will have been disappointed with the goal, but we had much more of the possession and, although I felt he should have come on earlier, Maloney looked as thought he might be able to help us nick that 1-0 win. Close, but no cigar. The improvement continues. P.S. Winning something is not the only target during a season. Improving our league placing to secure European football and getting the players that it will attract is a completely valid. That was always going to be the main target this season. The season is NOT over; If you really thought it was, you wouldn't bother watching any more games, posting on message boards or taking any other serious interest for the rest of the season. Not likely. |

I thought we played quite well. The ball was in ManUre's half for a good majority of the first half, but Man U defended well. Ashley Young had trouble getting around Evra, which is more of a credit to Evra than a knock on Ash. There are two things that I would have chaned in the tactics- one, obviously, is to stop trying to play the long ball all the time. While it may work from time to time, we do have midfielders skilled enough to get the ball up to the strikers. The other thing O'Neill might consider is switching Reo-Coker and Petrov. With Petrov on the right, the formation almost switches to a 3-5-2, with Mellberg playing up to fill the void Stan leaves by constantly tucking in. The few times Reo-Coker took it up the wing, he looked loads more comfortable there than Petrov does. Other than that, I liked most of how Villa played yesterday, and have a feeling that we do have a solid chance at either European competition for next year. |

it was a dissapointment yesterday, the performance the attendence the away fans, but there were also positives aswell, like curtis davies performance which was brilliant. He looked like a clone of laursen, good in the air, good on the ground, read the game well and looked comfortable throughout, and the deal is done with the baggies and im made up cos he will be a future england international if he plays like he did yesterday. I think it was melbeg and bouma that were the poorest yesterday, and I think they should be the ones being replaced, and also agbonlahor needs a kick up the a*se aswell, I don't think MON will bring in top class signings in this transfer window because like always the prices inflated and you can never get what your after if your not willing to pay rediculous money. It's like us for example paying 10 million for someone like beattie who is a bag of sh*te instead of waiting till july and bringing in someone like Owen or Martins who wont cost much more. We need to remember if we can push for at leat a eufa cup position which is a very good possibility then we can offer the better players continental competition and attract a better calibre. We need to be patient, give MON support and help Villa back into europe for next season! UTV |

I work 9 hhr shifts for the nhs with 1/2 hor break all day, my wife is a nurse and tomorrow has to go on a ward infected with norovirus (which I have done as well) so when I spend a part of my time off watching and investing in a team of course I'm going to feel sick and ripped off by players paid 10 times a nurse in a week come up with the grabd total of 1 SHOT ON GOAL. Absolutely disgusting, blind support does not make a better fan, just to justify their ineptness to make value of the time you have invested doesn't make it right and surely you cannot find solace or happiness in these meager crumbs of justification. Moving away from the man u result...Ive just found this on the sky sports comments board "ASTON VILLA NEWS : There are two new signings to be announced at Villa Park by Wednesday 9th Jan. Aston Villa will confirm the signing of Kevin Doyle from Reading on a four & half year contract, It would have been completed last Thursday, however, Reading manager Steve Coppell is yet to decide whether he wants Villa's Luke Moore as part of the deal or straight cash (which is 6.5M) he won't play against his former team though as Aston Villa face Reading in their next fixture. Secondly Giles Barnes will sign (not too sure on length of Contract / or fee) but he will definitely be available to face Reading at Villa Park 12/01/08. Martin O'Neill is playing the waiting game with Porto over Jose Boswinga as Aston Villa were told in the last window to come back in Jan with a bid and although Porto are reluctant to sell they realise the player's contract is running down and theres little or no chance of him signing a new one, Villa will get there man however, this may have to wait until 30 / 31st of January at a cost of 8M. Villa also set to go for two more (as yet my informant at Villa Park is yet to furnish me with these details) but as soon as I receive them I will post on this message board." A good start to the window if its true! |

Im as big a Villa fan as you and yeah i'm disappointed too, but was it your opinion that this was the season we would win the FA cup, league cup or Premiership? You are kidding right. Heres how it is and, please, respond to any point honestly. 1. Just the Second Season after complete new ownership and new management/coaching staff. Now forgive me if i'm wrong but from the start of the season, what gave you the opinion Villa should be challenging for honors this season? 2. This season was only ever about one thing - getting into Europe. Yes i'm sure along with every other fan that a cup would be a bonus, but thats all it is. This is how it works: You get into europe through consistent league performance. This attracts players to come to a successful club playing in europe. This attracts young prospects to come to a good club. This builds squad numbers and THEN momentum to challenge for honors. 3. Maybe when you were young Villa were one of the top 3 clubs in the country and therefore getting into Europe wouldn't be enough. They're not anymore! The same way chelsea and Arsenal weren't winning much at the same time. Where did we finish last year? Times change. Damian, some of your articles are just so out of touch with fans perspectives. And this is proven in every comment section of every post you write. |

at essjaydee, I don't think Damien is out of touch at all. I'm probably not the only one who think s he's quite often right. People just take things he writes too literally (if that's possible). When you read 'that's our season over', read 'that's our season over now in terms of winning anything'. Of course Damien knows the season isn't over in terms of having absolutely nothing to play for. I've just re-read Damien's piece and it's explicit - 'that's the season over, inasmuch as we've only got next season to play for'. When I read these comments, I find most are either short sighted or not really thought about. I take comments more seriously if Damien says he agrees. I think all he was saying was is that he's disappointed we didn't win, as it means we won't win anything now. I feel the same way - I half feel Man United were there for the taking. The other part of me feels like they could have scored 4 again if we'd have took the lead. Anyway, if Wilf had been watching his man, we might be going back to Old Trafford for a replay. essjaydee - read the article properly before you waste your effort - in fact, I'd be interested in what particular issues you feel Damien is so out of touch with? The only thing I disagree with him on is his assessment of your comments being 100% correct. And possibly his views on Martin Laursen, but I can see what he means. Maybe he's right about the long-term and all that. Damien - keep up the good work. |

LOU, thanks, heard from a source that Doyle was at vp now and wanted to see if anyone else had heard this. PS. anyone who questions why villa went out against man utd need to look at the subs benches, they have the squad to drop 5/6 players and still put out a very decent side!! The telling factor is they could bring on Wayne Rooney and we could bring on Luke Moore, no disprespect, but they're not the same class. We have the smallest squad in the league and the xmas fixture pile-up took it's toll, we ran out of steam in the 2nd half of the Spuds game and realy didn't offer anything against Manure, we desperately needed this week to rest and get ready for the rest of the season, bright times still ahead. up the villa. Sign Carson he is young and English with bags of potential.A new RB because we need one.Extend Laursen's contract he is class.Barnes is young English quick and has skill.Moore doesnt want to be here so do a swap for Doyle who i think would stick more of our chances in the net.We have to lern to live without Melberg because i think he will be off in the summer, shame because he is a legend.Sorensen and Harewood just arnt villa standard and the young lads i want out on loan all have great talent they just need experience.Thanks. |

Yeah, ha, I go on there if I'm ever in need of cheering up. I don't quite think we're about to spend 70 odd million this month do you? I'd like the pair of them, though the price for Doyle seems a little excessive. Milner I'd love to see back at VP, I think this would be a perfect time to sign him too, before they sack big Sam and bring in someone with a brain! I've also seen us linked with Bobo Balde a lot recently? Not too sure what I think about that though, yet. |

Though talking of foobtall-rumours.com, It would be rather funny if everyone submitted an equally stupid rumour and see which ones got posted! |

I think that the EPL is really 4 mini leagues; top 4 (Prem1), UEFA places (Prem2), mid table (Prem3) and relegation battlers (Prem4). The last few years have seen us in Prem3 and Prem4, we are now in Prem2. Our season now comes down to WINNING Prem2, or even getting up to Prem1. D'ya see what I mean? ALSO, if Arse win Carling Cup and Manure win FA Cup there will be extra 2 guaranteed UEFA places (correct me if I'm wrong). Anyway, we fought hard to stifle ManUre, succeeded until last minutes. Quite an improvement on our last game against them. |

| @ Steve M, thanks for being a fan and reading everything I write, I appreciate it, I will keep writing as long as I like and if you don't agree maybe you could just realise not everybody thinks exactly the same? hard to imagine for you I know. Anyway I agree with you about everything you say and everything you will ever say as well |

| The plan didn't come off,but at least we tried. Ultimately the game was won when fresh super quality players were able to come on and give fresh impetus to a very defensively tactical game. If we had 'charged, cavalier-style' I think they would have tonked us. Some say that our players get paid millions, so why are they tired? It really doesn't matter how much you get paid, it's what the body can take; legally. There were plenty of willing horses getting flogged to death. I was impressed by the desire and discipline we showed for long periods. We have made great strides and are continuing to do so, if we had played LUTON or STOKE I'm sure we would have performed better than LIVERPOOL or NEWCASTLE and got a convincing win as we are a good counter attacking team. It's very disappointing that we're out,but it's more important to keep upbeat and look forward to new signings which will see us being a regular top 6 or top 4 team in the near future. |

Regarding Damian: next time i think about writing anything, whatsoever, i'll make sure that instead of just writing down my opinion i'll email every one first so i can agree with what every one else thinks Slating my opinion with barrels of sarcasm i dont mind, im a villa fan after all. But if your going to dish it out, be respectful enough to take it. You've come back at two people in 505Anthony and myself for disagreeing with your own opinion. which kind of makes your comment above rather hypocritical, ironic and overall amusing. Regarding JP: in fact, I'd be interested in what particular issues you feel Damien is so out of touch with? Sure, no problem, and thankyou for commenting back to me respectfully, without slaughtering my opinion. just reading through the comments of fans, there's a recurring theme... 'Lets put this into perspective', 'this season has always been about next year', 'whats more important, a top 6 finish and europe or a good cup run' are just three different comments and i could've picked a lot more. So when a statement says 'Our season is over', and the overwhelming majority say otherwise then it is of my opinion that the statement is out of touch with the fans so i commented on it. |

I don't necessarily agree with everything Damian says, but I always think it's well-informed, and quite often correct, and that's why I always check the blog. As far as the ManU match, look on the bright side - we don't have to worry about them dumping us out of the FA Cup again for 12 months. If we're truly getting the big group of players Xandeh says, it'll be interesting. I for one hope that Michael Owen isn't signed, though, because the only thing he offers us is the chance to have an item in the paper every week about how MON is hoping Owen will be fit soon. |

at andy5759. there are potentially 3 euro places for league finishs if all goes to plan in the cups. if a team already qualified for europe wins the league cup, it doesnt go to the runner up but to the league. if another already qualified wins the fa cup, it goes to the runner up but again if they have qualified, it goes to the league. this happened last year and up to 7th place qualified for europe after chelsea beat arsenal in the league cup and then also beat man u in the fa cup. |

| There are a lot of rumours circulating about Doyle and Barnes. Ive heard a few times now that they were both spotted at VP on Friday. Apparently the hold up with Doyle is Reading are still considering if they want Moore included or just cash (6.5Mil), who could blame them for second guessing? This move would also see Harewood sent out on loan to perhaps Derby, or Sunderland. Also Riise seems to have come back in to contention as a signing for us, due to a reshuffle at Liverpool as Benitez tries desperatelt to keep his job. At 4.5mil its alot cheaper than 15mil plus for Bosingwa. Hopefully there is some truth there at least these names have come up a few times before! |

| @ xandeh, tha is the biggest pile of bulls**t i have ever read, guarentee 9/11 of those players dont come, why would we want michael owen, fair enough he is one of the best strikers in the world but he cannot stay fit long enough, so i cant see why he would try to sign owen over anelka, wayne bridge wont come either he isnt first choice at his club now so why would he come to villa and be second choice there specially as u have just said bouma is going to sign a new contract (which i believe he will along with laursen)but i also believe mellberg is off in the summer |
