Goals from Gabby and Davies are good enough to see a professional Aston Villa beat Wigan

This isn't a match report, more of a news alert; Aston Villa come from behind to beat Wigan 2-1 and it was done quite impressively.

I say it was impressive because John Carew went off very early, replaced by Luke Moore and the pitch was bloody awful; probably quite good for a team like Wigan who like to fight instead of play.

Anyway, we went one down in the first half to a, don't snigger, Titus Bramble goal and things were looking quite strange. I say strange because the pitch really was not a pitch to play football on and it made the whole game quite different.

It was different only because we didn't see the type of play we are starting to produce on quite a regular basis, as in across the floor and out to the wing. This resulted in Shaun Maloney getting subbed in the 60th minute but not before Curtis Davies scored in the 55th to level things.

I really do feel for Shaun Maloney because he doesn't ever seem to be able to do enough. In fairness today though the pitch was, as I've said, very poor. Good for Wigan but not Shaun Maloney.

So, ten minutes after Maloney left the pitch Villa took the lead when Gabby headed in from very close range after Ashley Young crossed after taking a nice pass from Luke Moore and then going past a Wigan defender.

We still looked dangerous and Wigan really didn't threaten, apart from the last few minutes when you'd expect them to pressure. Overall, an excellent result, even if I did lose my bets; thanks to Portsmouth.

Great to see the lads come from behind again. Not that I like them continually going down 1-0 before starting to get serious, but at least they're showing character and an ability to get goals. Must be a right of passage for a new CB to score on his full premiership debut.

Does anyone know how serious Carew's injury is? Bloody shame with him coming into form, finally.

This is a relief for me, more than anything else. 3 points was important today and it sounded like very difficult conditions.

Job done.

Great win for the villa boys. Listened to it on the radio and by the sounds of it, it was terrible conditions but neva mind the conditions it was the same for both teams.villa just showed how good they can be in the end by the sounds of it. Now were in the top six joint with everton, hopefully they lose tonight then its onwards and upwards and hopefully 3 points against spurs then europe is a real possbilty with the transfer window open then.

If we can beat spurs which won't be easy with the scoring form they are in. Then come january if we can get a RB, RW, CM (maybe) & CF i think we're capable of finishing 5th but it all rests on who we sign and players staying injury free.

*********

Two seasons ago, Ellis and ODreary were running the show. We weren't relegated, and now Villa are rightly eyeing much more ambitious goals. Which we would've been all along had it not been for a long spell of miserly and unambitious ownership.

It's about time for Villa to be condescending to the likes of Wigan. In another year or two, Villa fans will be condescending to everyone in the premiership but the likes of Arsenal and Utd.

well done to curtis davies he's got a lot a stick over the few months, great debut an a goal i hope he stakes a claim an does well in the next few games an push hard to keep zat on the bench an show us a 10 mill rated player, young did it no reason why davies cant

Joint top 6 an if it was to end in a draw tomorrow only 3 points from 4th not bad at all smilies/grin.gif

This spurs game is a tough one to call there coming back to form there slowly creepin up the table i hope its as good as it was at there place but i think were gettin stronger an wiser as the season goes on i think we can push them to the limit

its great listening to other managers talk of how scared they are of us cathchin them on the break with such great pace an skill .

I Don't want to be negative but i have a feeling we're going to lose to spurs. I'm going to give 3 points as to why i think this. 1 Malbronque he's hit form on the left hand side and i can just see him giving Mellberg a torrid time. 2 Berbatov, Keane & Defoe all three are scoring goals for fun and it's lot of pressure on the Defence to deal with. 3 Maybe No Carew and Young even if it's just carew out we'll miss his big presence and ability to hassle defenders. I Hope i'm wrong though.

When CD scored the equaliser, he made a gesture of an upside down V with his finger on the other hand crossed over when running to celebrate. A lot of players seem to be doing this at the moment, what is it supposed to mean?

Just found this. I have heard of him but hav'ent seen him play. But if he is considered a good prospect at sevilla, he can't be a bad transfer target for us!

Re: the A celebration. Ive been wondering about this myself, Ive seen Andy Johnsen & Cameron Jerome do it all this season along with other players (I think Marcus Bent did it.) There was some discussion about this on 606 and alot of people have said it is a clothing like logo that they are paid to promote. Now i have my doubts about this answer. Anyone know for sure?
