Rumour and speculation: Eidur Gudjohnsen and Justin Hoyte
Written by Damian

It's now a statistical fact; for every eighty-six Aston Villa rumours you hear, one of the stories you thought was a load of rubbish, turns out to be true.

I'd love this one today to be number eighty-six because these are two players I'd love to see in claret and blue. The only thing is, it's not the eighty-sixth rumour, it's one of the eighty-six.

Hoyte is a young right back with potential who quite understandably is finding it difficult to break into and keep a place in the Arsenal starting eleven. He's also English, which is also a plus point in terms of it seems to be exactly what Martin O'Neill is after.

He'd be a very good addition to the team and not just because we don't have a recognised right back, but because he appears to be a very good player who, you'd think, should only get better under Martin O'Neill.

Onto Eidur Gudjohnsen and the player I'd really like to see at the club. Okay, he's nearly 30 years old but he has a real eye for goal and knows how to score.

He did it at Chelsea and while his game to goal ratio isn't that great at Barcelona you don't lose that natural ability, you've just got to be given more starting opportunities to speed up finding it again.

Please, don't forget, these are rumours though. But wouldn't they be nice?

Eidur will go to West Ham as they will pay him over a 100k a wick! Hoyte will stay at arsenal as he is back up for Sagna. Arsenal will not leave themselves short when they are going for the title.

I really, really want good players in January but i have got a feeling we will be let down again!!!

Three points against man citeh will see us in sixth for christmas though as i have foreseen all the results going our way, so that will cheer me up!

Would still love Defoe to replace Moore though......

Up the villa!

i have always rated eidur. he's not the natural finisher you make out, although he does have an eye for a goal. he oozes more quality than anything and would give us an extra dimension up front. someone who could conjure something from nothing.

however i agree with northstandholteender and think that he'll end up a west ham just because they don't care about giving players really high wages even though they dont deserve them. lucas neill anyone!!!

I Don't want eidur at Villa in all the years he was with chelsea i never seen anything WOW out of him. If Villa want a striker who can produce magic from nothing and has a real eye for goal and won't be on stupidly high wages it's Anelka if we look like getting europe then i think a real possibility. Hoyte is a intresting link with all the RB's we've been linked to he's one with quality, I Watched highlights of the carling cup and he played well so he could be a quality signing just need to wait and see if it's true. Also sign Defoe to replace Moore we'd have very nice strike options if we could land him and Anelka.

One last thing Abou Diaby i'd like Mon to make a move for him for the CM he's got a great touch and vision could be our french version of merson.

I'd like to see them both at the club. Gudjohnsen is a quality attacker and he can create as many as he scores.

If we so get Hoyte, I hope it will be as a back up for a new right back, though. He may have potential, but he's not in the same class as some of the other right backs we've been linked with.

Forget Hoyte, we should go for Lassana Diarra from arsenal

We could go for Diarra, and that is probably a valid link. MON went for him last summer, but he chose to sign for Arsenal instead, from this article on Damian's second favourite site in the whole world

Sign both Diarra and Diaby both are capable of playing on the flanks and in the Middle, Also Diarra has played at RB.

gudjohnson is struggling at barca because they asked him to play as the front line in a forward 3 and he simply cant do it - question is would villa just do the same (only replacing ronaldinho and messi with gabby and ash which would obviously be better!)
and as for hoyte being RB back up at arsenal - dont forget they can put eboue in there and play either theo or hleb at MR

Robbie said:

Well, MON did hint at the fact that he has an RB lined up for January that he couldn't get in the summer, and has just denied making a move for Bosingwa, so i would guess it could have been hoyte. I've seen a fair bit of him for Arsenal, and he looks like he can do a job for us there...but i don't know if he's a great talent...certainly no better than glen johnson. I think we can do better. Also, i was under the impression that hoyte was being kept by arsenal whilst Eboue was away on African Nations duty...but i spose they do have sagna and diarra in that position. It could well happen, but we might be able to get better.
Gudjohnson on the other hand, i'm even more undecided about. Is he still quality? Was he ever that good? What's he going to be like in our team, bearing in mind we're no chelsea or barcelona? Can't see him making goals on his own, like Defoe would.

Gudjohnson for villa, big YES not only would he score goals but gabby's tally would be doubled as the man makes more than he scores. Yes Please Santa

Diaby is a qaulity player, but i cannot see him leavin the 'Wenger Boys', (excuse the pun), Diarra isnt as good as you seem to make out so i would pass on him, but i would love to see SALIFOU, get a chance, see everyone seems to have forgot about him!! smilies/shocked.gif
Gudjohnson is a larsson type of player, but not as many goals, so another no!, BUT AIDEN McGEADY would be the best villa buy since Young!
i saw in the birmingham mails 'your shout' column some idiot slagging off carson saying he doesnt come for crosses so bin him off, but we have to remember he is still young a the best british goal keeper bar none!
Justin Would definately jump ship to villa in favour of more fist team footy!
and one last thing please MON keep Cahill!

Either Gudjohnsen or Who..? Sorry bad joke smilies/grin.gif

Gudjohnsen suits the EPL and would be worth having for a couple of seasons before he takes off again. But wait a second, we have a player like that already - John Carew..

Justin Hoyte on the other hand would be an exceptional buy and would do his potential England career the world of good getting regular appearances.

brett said:

i agree that carson doesnt come for crosses, but aslo agree that hes the best young keeper around, unless we go abroad for someone like ochoa or akinfeev. I would still like villa to be linked to some of the names spurs are being linked to, alves wont happen but now its ujfalusi, also castillo whos gone to man city would have been a great signing, MON should check to see if lucarelli feels the same way about ukraine

Robbie said:

By the time i took the villa job on Football Manager this year, MO'N had already bought that Ujfalusi fella. I'd never heard of him before, but the guy is a genius on that game. Considering the amount of scouting work that goes into FM, he must be worth a cheeky punt. I do admit, the overwhelming feeling is that the scouts at villa really don't buy find young players from around europe, like castillo, and instead, we buy the players from england that every knows are good, and therefore we have to pay huge sums for them. If only we can get an great young player from the continent, i think we'd get excited. Where was we when Elano went to city?

Forget both of them. I'm not a fan of Gudjohnsens and i'm certainly not impressed by Justin Hoyte. If we want someone to replace Moore, a cheeky bid for Tommasso Rocchi at Lazio would be worthwhile. Also, Valon behrami at Lazio would be a good right back, with good attacking and defensive ability.

Isaksson should be available this January from Man City...and Larsson looking to make a final bow in england. He'd certainly be a good player to have if we're shooting for a top 6 finish.

Diarra has said he doesn't want to play for arsenal anymore and wants to leave in january because he wants first team football. He'd certainly get that at villa and he can play in several different positions so i say we splash the cash on him, he looks a very good player from what I've seen.

I personally would be very disappointed with either of these. Gudjohnsen has peaked in his career and will continue to age plus the money he would cost us wouldnt be worth it. Hoyte does not impress me, he had a loan season at Sunderland and was awful. I hope neither rumour comes true!

i think we should go for gudjohnsen, mcgeady and hoyte because hoyte and gudjohnsen are not getting played week in week out but i dont know about mcgeady.but what have we got to lose if they want to come then its a bonus but if they dont there is just as much quality out there.

up the villa

well i dont think for one minute these rumours are true, gudjohnsen all though a decent player is not what we need, if we are after a goal scorer who can get us 15 or 20 goals a season i cannot see mon for one minute think he will be the man for the job,now if he was 3 or 4 years younger maybe, but saying that look at phillips banging them in at the albion who we let go for nothing and hoyte well im not so sure he would make the team any better, the idea of buying players is to make the team perform and to do this we need players who are better then we have got, not players who are on equal par or below, why not give salifou a chance and bring back cahill they wont cost us, only there wages. we do need a right back somebody about 25yrs old just ready to come in to his prime not someone who wants to turn up week after week for the money thinking they are bigger then aston villa fc or someone who wants an easy life before they retire,we also need another winger unless he uses gabby,in that case a goal poacher.

Looks like it wasn't just the Daily Star with this story. When I went out to catch up with a few mates they told me that they had seen the story in the Express as well. I always say, if more than one paper has a story such as this then there has to be some sort of truth in it. Besides the Express normally is really good on Villa transfers etc

i didnt know you could play football manager too much, and i didnt even get round to suggesting MON should go for Bojan smilies/smiley.gif
but i agree that villa dont seem to be throwing their scouting network all over europe
as stupid as it sounds there seems to be alot of very good players in eastern european leagues that dont want to be there, castillo reportedly paid the £3.5m loan fee himself so he could join city

I'd prefer Giovanni Dos Santos, can only dream though!
December 21, 2007

Robbie said:

Yeah, dreams of Gio Dos Santos and Bojan are only the things of FM unfortunately. But really, it's not hard to find good players at poor clubs elsewhere in Europe...but it seems that our scouts only work in the Scandanavia and British areas. I'm still sure that they picked Salifou's name out of a hat to try and prove that they were doing something.
