Is Martin O'Neill building the next England team at Aston Villa? Rumour has it Crouch is coming back
Written by Damian

When the previous incumbent sold Peter Crouch it was a mistake. Every Aston Villa fan will agree it was a mistake because he never really got a proper chance to show us what he had.

Some might not have thought he was great but on the above point, his chance at Villa, all surely have to agree. Well, after losing £3mn. on him when he moved to Southampton, it looks like we're going to be paying £10mn. to bring him back.

It is a rumour and as such it's filed as a rumour but it's also in the Independent that Martin O'Neill is going to spend £20mn. on Crouch and Carson.

If Crouch came that would then take the total number of England squad regulars to four, and with the hope that Gabby and Gardner could make the step up in time, it's quite a wonderful prospect.

Would you like to see Crouch back at Villa Park, would this signal the departure of Carew and if this happened would this mean that Martin O'Neill is planning to play 4-4-2? Leave your comments below.

Yes, we'll take Crouch back anyday. He never got a proper chance at Villa under O'Dreary. I remember him scoring two when we battered Leicester 5-0, and he was dropped the following week because Angel was fit.

Doesn't mean Carew should leave though, we need more options not less. Get rid of Harewood.

We definately need to bring in a proper striker to partner Gabby. I have never rated Carew, really. He does an ok job for the national squad, but that's about it. His finishing is below amateur level, and frankly I could do better myself in plenty of situations.

That said, I sure as hell hope we don't pay £10M for Crouch. Carson being slightly overpriced is fine by me, every solid side needs a proper keeper, but we should look elsewhere to add to the firepower up front.

i would love rodney back, at the expense of carew. i don't want two of the same in the squad but in all fairness when he left i was happy to see him go. at the time i didn't think he could cut at.

we had angel (23 goals that season) and vassell (who believe it or not played well for us then) who were our first choice and crouchy to me seemed like a player good enough for a bottom half team (which explains his mouth to southampton). i always liked him, i thought after he came back from his loan spell at norwich, he was a different player who had a good touch and a scored a few decent goals.

anyway only time told that he was better than he was at the villa and its no fault of our own considering we finished 6th that season and we didnt think we needed anyone of his quality (at that time). but if it means paying another hefty transfer for the big man, i'm down with that!

Hmm sorry Crouch isn't sold on me. I don't know what it is others see in him.

Just an English version of Carew, can't hit the target. Yeah he had a good spell with England but he is back to how he was before that.

We didn't give Crouch a chance, fair comment. Maybe we need to give Carew the same?

for ones who doubt crouch (and i was one) his goal record is one in every two games and apart from that he holds the ball up is great at brining others in to play with great feet which if you havnt noticed take the time to have a look noy at the way he looks but at what he does how long did rooney go for without scoring for england in a competetive match im not saying crouch is in rooneys league but if crouch hadnt scored for england for that period of time hed of been long gone

If you read the aritcle in the Independent, it says that Liverpool have already offered him to several clubs in an attempt to provoke a bidding war.

12 goals in 23 games for England means quality. We should go in for him as he is a proven premiership and international goalscorer.

With the issue of player quotas in the premiership becoming more burgeoning, why the f*** shouldnt we buy British. I believe Martin O'Neil has spotted a gap in the market, and in time, I am sure Curtis Dav ies will make the step up to the international scene under the wing of the Irish one.

Up the Villa !!!

Please not crouch back at Villa. Yes he has had the odd good game for liverpool and england but he is not good enough. it is like Phil Neville leaving Man Utd for everton. we all know he is avergae and being at everton shows it. Imagine if darren fletcher left Man utd to play for us he would be very average that is what Crouch will be. We dont want players not good enough for clubs in the champions league we want players that are and see the potential for us to be there in the next few years. Crouch is definitly not the answer!!!

I have mixed emotions about Crouch. I think he's a better finisher than Carew, but only marginally a better player if he is at all. And if you look at his goal scoring record for England (they're all listed on Wikipedia), the only teams of any repute that he has scored against are Greece and Uruguay, so I think you have to take the 'goal every two games' thing with a grain of salt.
With that said, I wouldn't be upset if he joined the team, I'd just caution a bit against the team throwing money at him expecting him to push Villa into the Top 4.

I have to agree with tonebone, Crouch is scoring because he's in a quality team. Look at the crosses he gets at L'pool, I know Young can whip them in but the quality of delivery is not as good as Pools- they have more players that are capable of putting in a good cross. Also Crouch's hold up play make look good, but look at his passing options- Gerrard, Alonso, etc..

As for England, the only goals of any kind of importance is away to Macedonia (cant spell) and Trinidad.

I find Crouch to be a frustrating player. He scores wonder goals out of nothing, but misses complete sitters. If he can improve his mental attitude, so that he doesn't fill his pants every time he's got a 6-yard tap in to do, or a penalty to take, he'd be great.

I suppose I wouldn't mind if he were in the squad, but not at the expense of anyone currently playing. He'd be a nice option to have, but I can't see him being a regular starter. And if it's for 10 million...Surely Villa could get more value for money with someone else.

i'd welcome him back he was great for villa and has done well since, hes always considered for the england squad and i don't see what harm it would do to have him back he can't do as bad as harewood has been doing

Defoe or Crouch - hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

We already have a player who can hold the ball up in Carew. Why sepnd 10 mil on Crouch who can do more of the same. I reckon offer 12 mil for Defoe who can play off Carew and in front of Agbonlahor. Go Villa !

crouch back anyday, the fact that he played for us before is irrelevant, he is a completely different player now, if he hadn't played for us before im sure everyone would agree that they'd be happy to have him. he's one of the top strikers in the league but i dont think he would leave liverpool. the fans love him there.

He will get us goals that's for sure but the club can do better with their money. I think if we are looking to progress further then we need somebody top class up there with Gabby, english or not.

The Crouch rumour has been going around for a long tiime. Over the weekend I heard a few things; Darren Bent 9.5m, Milner (another returnee) 4m, SWP 8.5m, Dica 4.5m, Hoyte 2.5m, Riise 6.5m, Bosingwa 8m, if not Crouch - LFC may offload Kuyt 10m. Carson done deal 9m. Also rumoured MICHAEL OWEN!! I kid you not - 9.5m. According to my mole Defoe is already lined up to go to the Arse, fee unknown.
We would probably then sell Marlon to someone like Charlton for 2-3m. Luke Moore would be loaned out to get first team experience along with Cahill and Osborne. What an irony if Sorenson went to Sunderland as first choice!! Almost as ironic as MON coaching an England team in Claret & Blue. lol

Haha Owen? that would be nice. Bosingwa would also be a great move. I read that we are after Marco Caneira another Portuguese international. I really doubt we'll end up with Shaun Wright-Phillips but him and Young would terrorize the wings smilies/grin.gif
