GC is certainly one of the greatest. Totally agree with all the comments on his skill and tenacity in the tackle. A Sid trademark tackle was when the opposition player was going towards the Villa goal with Sid in pursuit. Somehow Sid would lunge forward in a slide tackle type action, collect the ball, get back to his feet, turn in the opposite direction, and move forward with the ball towards the opposition goal. This was all in one breath taking movement. Is this on any video clip anywhere? |

Two memories of how great a player he was: 1. He was by far the best player on the park when we played Juventus in the EC QF in 1983. And that was up against a midfiled of Boniek/Platini/Tardelli. 2. He almost won us the league under GT MK1 in conjunction with McGrath and Platt. So many, many goals seemed to be McGrath to Sid.....killer pass to Platt....and goal. |

| In Sid, Platt and McGrath we had 3 of the best ever English players to be in the game. |

Apologies to everyone for being so off the point. However i have read a few good reports on Salifoe playing for the reserves and wondered if anyone who had been to the games could give me an honest opinion on how good this boy is. Is he good enough to break into the first team asap? Again sorry for being so far off topic! |

Too right..Sid Cowans was a hero and still is. Fair play to Adam for such an in depth post. I'd nearly forgotten some of the great times / players mentioned. UP THE VILLA |

I'll spell it out once more - The whole island of Ireland is part of the British Isles (geographically). However, it is not part of Great Britain politically. What we lack in our midfield now is anyone approaching Sid Cowans. I think Petrov was brought in to provide that role (creativity) but has been found sorely lacking. Mind you, Sid was one-in-a-million. |

I think if we throw Sid some boots he could do a good job for 90 minutes still he'd be slow but he's still got the class. |

| Gordon Cowans. Six stone soaking wet but could tackle like Norman Hunter (if any one can remember him) pass like Glen Hoddle (dont want to remember him!) and shoot like Steve Gerrard. Fantastic player so underated in his time except by Villa fans. wish we had him now. Thanks for the memories and good luck Sid! |

I'm from Bari and I saw and appreciated Cowans when he was here. He was a great football player and in that period I become an Aston Villa supporter. I hope a day to visit Villa Park. Forza Aston Villa. bye |
