Portsmouth midfielder Pedro Mendes for £3m?

According to the Sun, Martin O'Neill is keen to buy Pedro Mendes in January for £3mn. Remember the key words here; the Sun and keen.

Mendes joined Portsmouth with fellow Spurs team mates Sean Davis and Noe Pamarot for £7mn. in January 2006 and has done a very good job for the south coast outfit, but this isn't the first time we've been linked with the player.

We were loosely linked back in the summer and while we've got quite a few midfielders at the moment he is a very good player, who won the Chumpians League with Porto and would only add to the squad.

Most will probably remember the goal he scored for Spurs that never was. It was against Manchester United when he shot from fifty yards and Roy Carroll managed to get to the ball when it had gone three years over the line but the goal was never given.

He doesn't fit into the Martin O'Neill philosophy of buying young talent, as he's 28 years old, but sometimes it's about balance so who knows, this could very well be the first rumour for January that I would quite like to see happen.

As a Pompey fan I would hate to see him go, especially for as low as £3million. Saying that he just isn't playing, while we trust Harry most fans I know are surprised by this.

Saying that the way we've been playing, 4-5-1ish with powerful midfielders such as Muntari, Mendes just doesn't fit, however with the big teams out the way I expect we will go back to 4-4-2 and I expect to see Pedro in the first team again.

If Villa to snatch him though you will be getting a cracking player, think Spurs fans still want him back.

If this were to be true, I would expect either Osbourne to go on loan or someone else to be shipped out, like a certain sulky Bulgarian who hasn't lived up to the hype or his potential, because you would not imagine a player like pedro mendes would come to the villa to be backup to the first team, with him being late twenties.

I think for £3M this would be a good move. He would add experience for our young squad and is pretty skillful.

I think if we are doing well in January we will be able to convince a few more high profile players and if we do get UEFA cup we will almost certainly be able to add alot of quality to the squad.

This would be a good buy bearing in mind that it is probably Patrik Berger's last season. Also i am suprised he has only played two games for pompey so far this season, but i think a lot of flair players at a lot of clubs arnt getting to many games this season with managers prefering to keep it tight with more solid steady type players, i think its becouse a lot of teams are expecting to make it into europe.

I don't know if he would be a good buy. I still have a lot of faith in Petrov and in many respects i believe petrov to be a better all round player. osbourne showed some decent leadership skills last season and I wouldn't like to see him get the boot. Mendes- under achiever or a bad settler?

I like him and for 3million if the story is true is a bargin scores some crackin goals even if he is going to be on the bench its a good signin because we lack those sort of players that can come on and change a game

would be a very shrewd bit of business! I for one hope it goes through, and maybe some one will take Petrov off our hands for 6.75m!!!!!!

Personally I would LOVE to see Mendes come to Villa, sure he's not a young pacey Brit, but I think MON can stray from the normal formula a bit. Pedro would be a big fan favorite, and maybe if Barry does go to Chelsea like the rumours suggest then he'll look even better to Mr O'Neill cos I doubt he'd be able to replace him with some fancy £15m big-name midfielder anyway ...
