Carew to Porto and Bosingwa to Villa?
Written by Damian

The Mirror published a story about Porto showing interest in John Carew back in early July and at the time I surmised it could be a sweetener for us getting Jose Bosingwa.

Well, with only a day and a half to go, it looks like we're probably going to be seeing lots more of these rumours starting up again.

I like John Carew but we do have a few striking options, with both Moore and Gabby preferring to play up front and while it is probably easier to find another striker (Defoe anyone) than a right back, there is every possibility that this is true.

Anyway, we'll see very soon, if this or any of the other rumours not yet dismissed by the club are true. Only a few hours to go!

I'd let Carew go if we got Defoe or another top class striker in.

As far as I'm concerned we don't have any top class strikers and the younger players need to be led by example.

Luke will come good but he needs to play with someone class.

the thing is, i don't think carew was ever a target of MO'N, it just worked at the time to get rid of baros .. i might be wrong but baros ended up with the manager that brought him to england again and we got a player that wasn't happy in france

I think Luke and Gabby (and Defoe if it happens) will be more efficient if they play with Carew as a target man.
So for me I would keep Carew and go for an other RB if that means we can't get Boswinga. I'd love to see Carew/Defoe together up front.

No No, we need Carew he is class, just lacking confidence, he'll come out of his shell. Want Defoe but as partner to Carew, with Carews size and hold up play he'd partner Defoe so well, Carew does the hard work Defoe scores over 20 in a season. Dont let him go big man!!

i like Carew as a different option, however from what i see, when he is on the pitch we seem to lob the ball upfront all the time. Whereas (Wrexham and pre-season) without him we put the ball on the deck and pass. I wouldn't like to see the back of hom, but if we were to get Defoe and Bosingwa instead, then I wouldn't be totally uphappy at the deal.

Yea we definately need a goalscorer! I would like ta see Moore gettin a run instead of Agbonglahor for a change,as I believe he's much more of a goal threat...That deal sounds very promising and would leave us able to sign another striker such as Defoe smilies/grin.gif

Yes i have to say at the moment i would let John go if we could get Defoe in, From what i have seen Luke is a better header than John anyway. Moore and Defoe up front, Mouth watering, there would be at least 30 goals in that partnership.

i also like carew and the professional attitude he has shown at villa since arriving but also feel he has waisted a huge amount of good chances, luke moore is capable of being a top goal getter, if we let carew go in a swap i think it would be better for all concerned as i feel he is holding our young strikers back as the are played out of position or left on the bench to accomerdate carew who is not justifying a first team spot for me

Do we have this cash or not? Is it possible we even have to consider exchanging our most experienced striker for a right back? This pot of gold promised months ago does not exist, Lerner get the cash out!!!

I think if we can get Ashton in then we can let Carew go for in exchange for Bosingwa, we do need a target man type of player, but im not so sure about Carew

no way, i wouldnt b happy if we let john carew leave, hes probably the best striker we have with his expirience and everythin, he is a totally different player to moore and defoe, hes abit of a target man and thats what we need with someone like moore playing off him. i think give him time and he will be bangin the goals away for us

Let Carew go! Bosingwa and Defoe is better players than Carew will ever be. I'm a Norwegian and thinks Carew is not the player Villa should be looking for... For every goal he scores he'll needs about 1015 chances and if Villa will be up on the table we need a striker that score goals!!! Bring in some experian players to combine with the young fellow from our own ranks and we will in time have a very good squad.

Carew has to stay. He is a Champions League quality player who is unstoppable when on form. Carew and Defoe would compliment each other, not compete with each other

My problem with getting Defoe in was the sheer amount of strikers we have, meaning that some will be dissappointed. If we can get Defoe, and get rid of Carew for Bosingwa, everything that MON has been dilly dallying over for months will be forgiven. Who needs a target man if we want to play on the deck without long balls. Make it happen MON.

One thing. Is it just me or is Damian the only person to mention the Carew/Bosingwa swap?

It is pretty obvious that Villa have approached Porto for Bosingwa, and yes, highly likely that Porto targeted Carew as a possible sweetener, but that nothing has happened yet suggests that it is not something MON wants to happen. Why then the speculation?

It seems more like an agenda to hound Carew than discuss realistic transfer activity. I can't understand why. MON plays with a big man and a poacher, this is fact. That is why he favours Carew, and why he brought Harewood in. We have Moore and Gabby as poachers, but they can't have all the pressure on their shoulders, so we could do with someone experienced like Defoe to come in. That makes sense to me.

Carew and Defoe up front, with Moore keeping them sharp, sounds a dream to me.

I watched bosingwa last night in the Porto - Sporting Lisbon game and he looks a very good player indeed... Lightning quick and gets forward a lot too, reminds me a lot of Cafu...

Would love to see him down at VP..

Right on man, let's jump on the groovy Defoe bandwagon completely forgetting that Defoe is utter garbage and can't ususally hit a cow's arse with a banjo, oh and we have better than him already.

Carew is a better player than Defoe. He is twice the target man Crouch is. Benitez slapped a £15mn price on Crouch, Rafa is a masterfull coach he knows how important having the options Crouch brings is to Liverpool. With Carew it is not all about his chances to goals ratio, it is also about the assists and work, and keeping two defenders off his strike partner.

Defoe is very far from being a 1 goal for every 3 chances striker

Carew is a spartan, we need him at the club. I'd like to see Defoe in and would be happy to even lose Moore to get him. Ashley obviously has to stay, although I'd say Gabby is a fringe player at the moment as I haven't seen one good ball from him yet this season - lots of pace with no finishing ability so he could go for all I care. Defoe is class, nothing short, stick him in the box and he'll bang em in. I know we have some talent up front, but apart from Ashley we don't have anyone with a truly class finish. Defoe alongside big strong Carew as a holding player is what we need.

As I said a couple of hours ago, Wigan have just bought a striker from Holland, Vassell may also be on his way there, get ready for Heskey to appear at the training ground v.v. shortly!!!! That will mean Carew to Porto and Boswingwa the other way!!! COME ON ITS ALL HAPPENING NOW!!!!!!!!!!

Villa Dave is spot on with his verdict on Defoe. There is a lot of fans who just want to see Villa spend more than Spurs, West Ham and Pompey, regardless of a players lack of finishing ability

£15M for Peter Crouch would be my target. He can score goals, but he also creates so many free kicks, flick-ons, takes defenders out at corners, comes back and defends well, lays the ball off well and is always 100% heart and has said that he would like to come back one day. The only reason some people don't seem to like him is because he can be clumsy and he's misses some right sitters at times. But the fact, he keeps getting back up and trying means he's worth his weight in gold and he's still young.

We made a big error selling him but I think a high bid would bring him back.

Even if Defoe comes we need Carew to support him.
Man Utd might use just pacey strikers but MON is definetly a 'big man-little man' kind of manager for attacking. However, we need to stop lobbing the ball at Carew in games, he's even said he prefers the ball to his feet since he can pass and dribble as good as he can head or in our case, have the ball kicked at his face and bounce to a teamate.

You are all bloody mad, Why sell Carew?.Mr Lerner promised to fund Martin O'Neills plans for January and this transfer window.Either he hasnt done his part or Martin has struggled to attract the players he wanted.IF M'ON can attract players like carew and curtis davis(maybe) then why cant he attract the likes of boswinga and defoe?.Defoe at VP is garanteed first team football, He'll be the first name on the list.So keep Luke Moore as a 3rd striker, Defoe and Carew upfront with ashley on the left, gabby(with his pace to burn) on the right and Barry and Reo-coker in the centre.Im praying to the forever faithful Villa god that davis, defoe and a DECENT right back, sign tonight or tomorrow before 12.00.00am.

oh by the way, The sporting lisbon vs porto game Boswinga was dreadful.

WOuldn't want to sell Carew he is quality and will be one of the only players who has experience of european football for next season. I just have a feeling that the RB situation might force the hand and in all fairness Porto are in Champs League and its better weather too!!!
Come on MON, Davies in by 10pm, Heskey to follow overnight, Boswingwa by Friday 5pm followed by Glen Johnson, Routledge and finally SHAUN WRIGHT PHILLIPS!!!!!!!!!! all by 00.01 01.09.07.

Carew lately not been at his best, looks unfit.

Once he regains his full fitness there is no question he is a huge asset to our team playing with a smaller striker, god please let it be defoe!

Those two together are the ideal strike partnership to compliment each other .... lets just wait and see, i have faith in MON to deliver the goods

A name im surprised we havent been linked with is Adriano, was quality a few seasons ago, but was poorlast season, but wants to leave inter and has one hell of a strike on him, i wouldnt complain if we made an appraoch for him although i read its likely to west spam who get him. On the Defoe front i dontthink this will happen either, I am a massive fan of his and think he is probably the best consistent english striker and i dont understad why he doesnt play. If he cam to villa hewould be guaranteed first team football and could see him putting away 20 a season. And i dont think we should sell Carew either. a great target man who, whenfit, is a big asset to the team

Blog speculation at it's worst. Not even loosely based on a recent article. MON thinks the world of Carew and there's not a chance of him going anywhere. And with the purse strings seemingly removed from the purse, there's no need to entice feeder clubs with our few genuine stars.
