This rumour started in January when Martin O'Neill went fishing in Watford and caught Ashley Young. It appears to have resurfaced.

Now, I'm not sure he is a striker, on an email I've read he's an attacking midfielder and while I'm not going to split hairs on exactly what position he plays in, he does look good at YouTube.

He's played 99 games for Steaua Bucharest and scored nearly fifty goals. He can be a defender with a goal to game ratio like that and it's as good as any striker we've got right now.

Now, while I could look good on YouTube he's another player that I've not seen much of or can't remember seeing much of him, so it's all I've got to go on.

It is also, just a rumour. Take it with a pinch of salt or anything else you'd care to take it with.

Many clubs across Europe have managed to attract players of quality despite not being in Europe or not having a huge history of recent success, witness Hamburg getting Van Der Vaart 3 seasons ago. The problem lies with ambition and willingness to spend cash: I suspect that behind O'Neill's justifications in terms of not wanting to spend over the odds for players lies a lack of funds or at least a safe approach on Lerner's part. Over the next 48 hours we'll know whether that's a wrong theory or it's how things really stand at the club right now. Should I be right, we as fans have been taken for quite a ride over the past few months.

I'm a Romanian and a Steaua fan. Trust me, Dică is a world class player, if he had pace, he would now be at Real Madrid and would cost about as much as Ronaldinho. He's a great player with European experience (he scored against Olympique Lyon last year in the Champions League group stage), but I really hope he won't leave Steaua, who will qualify again for the group stage to play in a team with no European ambition.
