O'Neill back in for Spurs striker Defoe?
Written by Damian

The rumour got woken up by international man of mystery, Bill Howell of the Birmingham Mail and it's been picked up by the Daily Mail, but is there any truth in it?

I'm not so sure but one thing is for sure and that's Defoe isn't getting any football at Spurs and I suspect he's the type of player who likes to play.

Martin Jol however is no mug and he'll want to keep Defoe, but if he can't guarantee him first team football will that be enough for the striker?

The thing is, while I rate Defoe very highly, he won't be guaranteed first team football at Villa and we do have a few striking options.

It's not to say he's not better, because he probably is and he certainly has more Premier League experience than any of the strikers we've got, but it's about form and staying in the side.

I quite fancy Luke to show us what he's got when he gets a proper chance and it's quite clear Gabby is a favourite of the managers already.

Rumour likelihood: I'd love him to come to Villa but he's got UEFA cup football this season and he probably knows he'll get games at Spurs over the course of the season; 6/1.

defoe is a great player and i wouldnt mind him at the club but one thing about villa this season is we do have very good attacking options, i dont think we need to fork out 15 mil or a price around that figure for defoe when we have carew, moore, young, agbonlahor n here the harewood

I would welcome Defoe, even though I'd prefer us to direct our money tp another mid and to a RB. Although I agree that we are strong at the stiker position, we haven't scored a goal yet from open play.

How can you possibly even question th emerit of signing Defoe? He is absolute quality and would easily command a first team place (unless his form dipped drastically). The guy is getting to the peak of his game, has bags of quality, experience, is an international and has a good attitude to boot.

For what its worth, he would be a major piece of the jigsaw (together with NRC, and Bonsingwa). Please don't give me this guff about Moore - yes he has potential but no where near Defoes ability or record yet.

Go in MON offer £17m and get the job done

I think we could save £15m by starting Luke in games, he did more than anyone in pre-season. Im sure Mon knows what he is doing and luke will become even better for it!

I'd be more than happy if we sign Defoe, Boswinga and Davies or Hangeland before the 31st August, would make it quite an impressive transfer window after all for me !

we havent scored yet at open play but weve only played 2 games and i wouldnt mind defoe id just sooner him spend his money on desperately needed defenders before he buys another striker

Maybe MON is getting Luke's appetite ready so he is even more raring to go.

Defoe won't come to Villa but I'd love him to. We've got some good striker's but no-one that will score as many as Defoe (well, except Moore! smilies/grin.gif)

Defoe is a class act and we should pay what it takes to get him. Everyone says are strikers have got what it takes but how many goals do you see them scoring this season. I would be surprised if our top scorer had more than 10 league goals at present. Defoe given a full season would score far more!!!!

My thinking on who we'll sign is as follows. Hangeland will come if Fc Copenhagen fail to qualify for the groups stages of the Champions League, which is fairly likely as they're playing Benfica and lost the first leg at home 2-1. He'll be the fourth centre back and will also share the holding midfield role with NRC. Rosenior from Fulham will come to provide cover in both full back positions. Bosingwa probably won't come as Porto's price is excessive, so Glenn Johnson could well sign, although it's possible that we could sign someone we've never heard or thought of (but O'Neill has!) to be our first choice right back. I think it's also possible that should we find someone suitable to replace Davis we'll sign them, though it's possible that such a transfer may happen in January, when players from teams knocked out of the Champions League will make themselves available. Curtis Davies would be on top of these signings, and might signal the end of Mellberg. Having said that, the Davies deal may be dependent on getting Hangeland or not.

I would love Defoe but not at 15 million, i would prefer Nuno Gomes, he would add a different kind of flair to our front line and would cost a 5 million!

yes we have those players but are any of them 20 a season players? maybe carew could be but that remains to be seen. Defoe would be an amazing buy but i doubt he would go to a team not in europe and if MON doesnt buy soon we're not gonna be in europe again and won't be an attractive club to play for for another season.

£15 mil is too much for defoe! We don't really need him anyway its defenders we need although if we could bag a 15/20 goal a season man i would be happy (Defoe is not one in my opinion!) if we do ever sign him i'd like him to prove me wrong!

There is a very wide margin between Defoe and every single attacking villa option. He has the right attitude, the man is a natural winner and will score more than any of our strikers. Why do so many Villa fans think Luke Moore is the option? He has not shown anything to suggest this. If Luke is as good as all of you think then why hasn't he shown this yet, Rooney has, Defoe did at his age, Bent has even Anichebe at Everton offers more than Luke.

The Cas...Defoe has been around in the prem for a while now, with a talented midfield to rely upon. Moore hasn't, but he has just as much natural goal scoring ability and given a run, it will show. You can't compare an established premiership striker with a rookie, who has a handfull of games under his belt. MON will nurture Moore into a good forward, he is at the right age. I'd still buy Defoe if he was genuinely available, but these are just made up rumours, so I suggest people ignore it.
