Martin O'Neill has finally admitted defeat in trying to bring quality players in for lower fees than other people are paying at the moment.
Too little too late for me. The transfer window has been open since the last day of the season and with 8¼ days left MON has finally realised he has to pay big money for players.
Well, several Premiership managers could have told him for nothing, and the fact they are paying over the odds suggests he must already have known that.
So has our summer been fruitless for this very reason? Has MON finally realised that he's got to start paying big money to get some players in now, just over a week away from the end of the summer transfer window and after the season has started?
I'm very surprised but I think like when Graham Taylor came back out of football to manage Villa, O'Neill may also have been out of the game a bit too long. The game has changed and MON has insisted on doing what he used to do best, get value for money. But you can't do this anymore and to keep up with big spending clubs you've got to spend big.
This is the first season for a very very long time that we've had a huge budget spend. And it's the first season for a very very long time that we've had a manager in charge that doesn't want to spend it.
Now maybe the General and Randy have been telling us porkies about the 'significant funds' and MON's been told to get value for money or that he's got to sell before he can buy.
I hope that is wrong but at the same time I don't really want a manager in charge that has wasted one of the best summer's we've had for years to strengthen our squad based on old ethos' that don't apply to the modern game.
MON keeps coming out with reassuring statements before saying some very stupid things and I'm getting a bit worried about Aston Villa Football Club.
Finger's crossed we get some players in and we do well. MON will learn from this that he can't get value for money any more, except on the very odd occasion.
But let's hope it hasn't cost us by then. Fulham at home at the weekend and it should be our first 3 points of the season. I'll be very very worried if not.

*despairs*
So MON has only just realised all of the above? Man, where do we get these guys from?
i think you make some very good points, and ill admit i am one of the very fickle fans of aston villa, but i think at least he has admitted it now, rather then september the 1st, with some time to go, and if heas come out and said this now, maybe he has been thinking it for a while, so im going to give him the benefit of the doubt until september the 1st at least, i think some players mon wants in might be persuaded with a bit of £££.
defoe is a good solid player who would do great for villa, and it baffles me why he wants to be 4th choice in a team
hopefully mon will spend millions bringing in players that will bolster the squad at this stage if anything it would give the fans something or someone else to talk about ;D
Better late than never :-*
as long as we get the signings that we wanted its ok by me!!!
AVFC Top 6 finish!!!!!
hopefully tonight will be taken as a very big indication on defoes future - behind a midfield based non scoring alan smith and a harldy played owen - IMO if he is willing to stay as spurs 4th choice striker and continue to not play for england then you question his ambition
MON better get get crackng then! I assume he's now admitted to having made a mistake and now needs to go all out to appease some of the fans (myself included). Stop quibbling over price and take a risk or two. Truth is you could overspend and pay £8mill for a player who's only worth £4mill but get 5 or 6 years out of them whilst on the other hand you could pay peanuts for a quality player and they could get injured. There is always risk involved signing anyone but to not take that risk could cost MON his job. Remember MON it's not your money its RL's let him worry about spending it !!!
i dont understand why everybody has been panicking soooo much about the lack of transfers so far, they will happen have some faith and dont judge till the 1st. there is no need to rush were only 2 games into the season and by the performance against newcastle we look very capable of having a good season. imo we need a couple of defenders and a good established striker, and i think we,ll be onto a winner .
it ses on teamtalk.com dat MON might go after Curtis Davies and Jose Boswinga and is set to pay "over the odds", bets bit of news i have heard in weeks, come on MON pull ya finger out ;D ;D
He obviously relised this sm time ago and has ppl in place for big fees, but has decided to make this statment so he can justify the money he has paid for them
Wooooooooooooo! Let's hope MON goes and spends millions in the next few days i'd personally love to see defoe at Villa and with all the uncertainty around Jols future lets hope it unsettles him and he'll leave plus with that i can't see davies going there if they're going to sack jol. Maybe we could finally sign Bosingwa, Hangeland or someone better! i'll deffo keep An eye on things ;D
As I Hate Blues said, MON has known this all along. His targets have been in place, and if he can't get the prices to go down, he'll pay the going rate.
You can't possibly think he's only just realized this. He wasn't out of the game that long. And he can read the papers same as us.
jesus christ!!!! the manager speaks, problem is, he's saying what most of us have been saying for weeks, you have to pay what ever it takes to get the players you want, it's sad, but it's a fact.
how much bloody time has he wasted to come to this conclusion, what did he expect with all the dosh that's being poured into the prem through tv and other media, plus the fact that most prem clubs have been sold to billionaire businessmen or companies, wasn't it obvious the price of players would be inflated. i just hope he has left himself enough time to put thing right. lets just hope he gets the right players.....no more marlon harewoods.........please
O'Neill always does his business on the deadline. It may be stressful for both him and us, but that is the fact. Let's look forward to all sorts of action at the end of the month, but let's also be positive about the fact that a) Nigel Reo-Coker looks like a fantastic signing and b) Martin Laursen after his surgery is effectively a capture from AC Milan. Just how good was he at SJP?
We also shouldn't forget that under MON Gabby, Craig Gardner, Gary Cahill and Luke Moore have all received U21 honours.
Keep the faith!
I think MON has done some of the deals already and is just letting us know that when they arrive they may be a little more expensive than we thought. He's covering his own arse, not that he needs to, everyone is that desperate on here it seems the price no longer matters as long as they are a decent name.
Keep the faith
Keep the Faith ffs!!! He has just admitted he has ****** up!! All of us could have told him at the start of the transfer window the prices he would have to pay.
He has 8 days to rescue what has been an embarrassing summer!! Get it sorted!!
I don't see why this is so bad.. if we can survive until January we'll have £80mn. to splash out, by then Martin the Magnificent will be prepared! Bring on the All-Stars!!
but mon wasnt thinking value for money last january was he...come on ash maybee ..but petrov dont make me laugh...
so whats changed since january....
