AVFC Blog Punt: Punting it away on a Villa win

I'm quite lucky when it comes to my football. The wife knows that as soon as the season starts if she wants me at the weekend she has to book up well in advance and not really expect me to do much while the football is either on TV or I'm out watching.

She also knows that if there is football on TV during the week, I'm watching it. I don't care what it is or who it is. Aston Villa comes first but then it could be any team after that. I love it.

But the season before last I got into betting. It started innocently enough; I'd pick five teams, pick the result and put a tenner on. I think I won on my second or third bet and it was a big one that pretty much financed the rest of the season. All looked good.

My philosophy was simple; keep it to a tenner and pick three bankers. My three bankers back then were Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea. I'd then pick two teams where I fancied a draw or an upset. At the end of the season I was up about £900 and I'd only started about half way through the season.

Well, last season wasn't as good as I got a bit cocky. I got cocky by having three or four bets and I mixed it up every weekend. I also forgot about my three banker rule.

I won't go into details but I was convinced that by the end of the season I'd be up. Well, it didn't work out that way. I lost about £600. It's not so bad when you factor in the £900 from the season before, but it still wasn't nice.

Anyway, this season I've decided to go back to basics. Well almost. I'm going to have my pick five with three bankers but then I'm going to have a bet on all matches on the Saturday. Each bet is going to get a tenner and I'm going to publish my bet each week and then tally up the results and put them in a little table.

The table will show bet amount, wins and losses each week so we will always be able to see exactly how much I've lost or hopefully won, throughout the full season.

If you want to get in on the action by all means join in and I'm talking to a couple of bookmakers about sponsoring this so we might even be able to offer specific rates based on what I'm getting or something along those lines.

So for the first week of the Premier League season these are my bets:

Bet One
Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Everton and Portsmouth - 7.64, potential win of £76.40

Bet Two
Sunderland, Newcastle, West Ham, Portsmouth, Blackburn, Everton, Villa - 822.87, potential win of £8,228.70

Now, I know what you're thinking; he didn't pick a draw. Well some weeks I will and some I won't but don't expect me to win every week. Just one out of every four should mean I break even at the end of the season and if one of the big ones come in I'll have a party and you can all come.

I will be putting up the table somewhere, probably on the home page, some time next week. Also, this weekly think won't be this long in future, it's only because it's the first.

I will go for:

Villa - Pool X
- 3 of the last 4 have ended that. Smells lowscoring with a careful Pool more concerned to not be thrown overboard, than to conquer Villa. And Villa are a rough nut to crack @ VP, the draw looks more than possible. Both teams would be semi-satisfied with it as well.

Bolton - Newcastle 2
- Big Sam the key reason. Bolton will have a hard season upfront, they've lost the man with the plan and a handfull of key players in the old Bolton spirit has gone away or are about to enter their 40's. Newcastle seem in good shape, the morale appears to be boosted, they have faith in what they are doing, and they know exactly what needs to be done to beat Bolton.

Derby - Pompey over 2.5 goals
- I admire Pompey, I admire Redknapp, and I admire the spirit of the team. A good mix of qualities, they have the potential to be a top 10 team and will not waste time in a match like this. On the other hand Derby is the team in the league with nothing to lose and everything to win. The first match of the year, back in the premiership, expect them to play with the heart outside their shirt, and expect them to push forward. Derby's defence will suffer this season, but they will score goals. I think we can see attractive and offensive football in this one with both teams scoring a few.

This treble pays around 20 times your money, and is my humble wager for the grand opening.
