Either the papers are getting desperate or we are: Alan Smith
Written by Damian

The Daily Star are claiming that Martin O'Neill is going to spend £8mn. on Manchester United striker or midfielder, Alan Smith.

Now, I like Alan Smith and think he's a decent footballer. He can be a bit of a muppet sometimes and when he was at Leeds I used to think of him like our Lee Hendrie, but at United I think he would have developed.

I think its fair to say that he's never going to be a first team regular at United and at 26 years old he' still to reach his prime.

He has played 93 times for Manchester United and scored 12 goals. Personally I think he would have scored more if 31 of those appearances were not as a substitute. I'd like him at Villa Park.

Is Martin O'Neill after the player though or are the Daily Star just clutching at straws? I suspect they are clutching at straws as I can't see the reason why you'd wait to sign a player like Smith.

Rumour likelihood: It's a rumour I'd like to see happen but one I just can't see happening. Don't put any money on it.

I don't think Smithy is the player for us, is he really better than what we've got? I would rather see Gabby or Luke starting up front with JC. To be honest I think this is just paper talk, surely MON must be looking for a player who will score 15-20 goals a season, and Smithy's past record doesn't suggest he can, with the amount of chances the mancs create 12 in 93 is poor, even including subs appereances.
So come on MON, go get us Defoe or Kone smilies/smiley.gif

I don't see a striker as too important since if Carew was unfit, we could adopt a different style of play, as we did at Blackburn and Wigan. But Smith has a good attitude, he's just a bit temperamental at times. Doesn't seem a likely transfer.

I wouldnt mind Smith but not for £8M. Its all about the price. Would we like smith at VP of course if the price is right. Did anyone read the rumour that Djemba Djemba is going on loan to a french club (lille i think?) If so that would be good news as we are still paying his wages arnt we while he sat around and did bugger all. Hopefully they will like him and take him off our hands.

I think that MON will go to Europe more for players as buying from other english teams. If Smith was playing in another country he would have a price tag of about £4M max. MON is no fool and will have many targets and will make top quality signings.

Randy is in fact worth about 2.45 Billion publicly so im sure its a lot more than that... but still 100mil is peanuts... would the FA allow him to pay that much out of his own pocket rather than the clubs. or is there no restriction on that

lerner is worth $1.5bn. which is approx. £730mn.

still, a lot of money and i'd be happy with £5mn.
