Don't worry and relax: Put your trust in Martin the Magnificent

Hughes has gone and if you look in that little box to the right you'll see that quite a few have gone before him. If this was two seasons ago, I would be getting very worried.

The thing is, it's not two seasons ago and I'm not in the slightest worried. I'm actually very very excited.

I intimated the other day that we should just leave it all to Martin O'Neill and what today has done, if anything, is strengthen my belief that we are getting some real quality and very soon.

The manager is going to want a full pre-season with his new players and just because none have been signed doesn't mean the deals are not as good as done.

It could be that it's just a case of lodging formal bids before completing everything. There is also a rumour doing the rounds that there is a big press conference coming up where quite a few players will be unveiled as new signings.

The bottom line is, we all had faith in the manager when he arrived and we should all have faith in him now. The signings will come and I expect when they do, they will be thick and fast.

Before I go I want to try and defend my position. Yes I may very well be deluded, but for me, the manager has three more seasons, so his first summer transfer activity shouldn't be one we get too worried about.

If we end up starting the new season and have only brought in three more players I'll not only be concerned but I'd be flabbergasted. If we've got no cover for right back when Delaney is injured then I'll probably also have a little pop that he shouldn't have let Hughes go before knowing he had someone else. Do you see where I'm going?

A new right back is already lined up as are probably most of the players the manager wants to bring in. Martin O'Neill is not stupid and he would have only allowed Hughes to go once it was sorted.

Anyway, I'm off to play some football now and probably a beer or two after. Enjoy the rest of your evening and lets hope that Friday press conference rumour is true. Oh, and the one about Bruno Alves and Daniel Guiza.

Mon would'nt let players go unless he was pretty sure we had replacements being lined up,i dont see any reason to panic.

Relax Stevio. Drop the sleeping pills mate. Set your troubled mind at rest. While I type Martin Hugh Michael O'Neill OBE is negotiating deals for players beyond your wildest dreams, players that will knock your socks off mate, mark my words mate. Martin likes to move in the shadows, he's a viper mate, a scarlet pimpernell, and you'll look back and see that he did it right. Mark my words mate. MITM!!!!

You have got quite the insight, I must admit. I love reading your blogs as they very, very often match my own thoughts. Hope you're right about the press conference!

i have to admit im getting bit worried with the lack of signing and the amount of players leaving i hope we regret doubting MON but there's be no players we been linked we recentley and the ones we have r rubbish or not good enough to take VILLA to the nxt level .ie. Haerwood, Koumas

I just hope that everyone who thinks that we have lots of signings lined up are right. I must say that im not of that view, but maybe im being pessimistic, i would rather bring in players before letting others go, and if i had them lined up why not sign them???
This press conference thingie is something ive heard too, i hope its right too, im just a little disappointed at the moment....

The suspense is killing me!

Love to see who the new players are and what the new kit looks like! Official site claims sometime in July and suggests it because Nike and Villa haven't agreed a date... not sure why but hey ho.

Is it just me or is it fun watching all of you guys whinge about there 'not being long left' there's 2 months left to buy players you fools.
Plus, such players as Gabi, Osbourne, Gardner and Cahill are all more developed and they'll be getting more games and can be more reliable. So we don't need to be that desperate to bring in players, a right-back will be in within a weeks time, NRC will be signing this weekend before he leaves for his break. If you were so delighted when MON joined last season, why are you doubting him now?!

When Randy joined he had 150 mil to invest in this club, he's spent 10mil on players in January, he spent 12mil on Bodymoor heath, 4mil on Holte Hotel and he's investing another 15-20 mil in the North stand and Villa Village, leaving a transfer kitty of 110mil for the next 3/4 years, we'll be seeing that paid off with some top-class players, just not this season as we have nothing to offer except for a training facility of the highest quality and a decent manager.

Looks like Bent is joining Spurs today so hopefully Defoe or Keane will be available for transfer. Neither will want to be in a rotation policy any more than they already are.

Saying that, I'd rather we went for Bent but if we can get Robbie Keane for less then that will be a real bargain.

the_flabster Wrote: | 00.30BST | Jun 29, 2007

Luke i dont think Keane will be coming since he has only just signed a new contract. Defoe is a possible as he will want regular playing time to get in the england squad. Wouldnt mind Defoe but not for anything more than £8M. WHU apprently want him aswell and if they outprice us (which the probably will) he may go back. I expect MON to sign more foreign players as they are better value for money.
