Bill Howell reveals the secret thoughts of Martin O'Neill

According to Bill Howell at the Birmingham Mail Martin O'Neill is 'stepping up his bid' to bring Jason Koumas to Aston Villa.

When I merrily clicked into the article I was full of hope and anticipation but again I was let down as there isn't a quote to be read anywhere, apart from at the very bottom and that is from West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace, talking about loan deals.

There is no doubting that last season Koumas was a revelation in the Championship and from the twenty or so games I saw he did stand out. He also has Premiership experience and he wants back.

I've had a taste but I'm at an age now where I want to be playing at the top level. It's a big jump but not a massive one, and I just need that chance.
Jason Koumas talking to FourFourTwo

Earlier this month Koumas revealed, according to the Daily Mail, that Martin O'Neill had shown an interest in him; it now looks, if this is to be believed, that the interest has increased a level or two.

According to Howell the deal would be worth £5mn. to West Brom and maybe a season long loan for a couple of Aston Villa 'fringe' players. Is it worth it? I'm not so sure, but I've been wrong before.

Not sure he's the type of player we need if we want to be pushing the top 4.

We need to be going for quality, not squad players.

you dont go from mid table to top 4 after one transfer window, so that is stupid to even consider.

koumas is perfect for our CURRENT situation of breaking into top 6 on a regular basis and getting regular european football back at the club.

best player outside the top flight and obviously should be playing in the premiership. Flair player in midfield with creativity one of his best assests, something we lack.

aslong as albion dont want silly money for him i say go for it

im not sure on this but i just think of when tim cahill went to everton and how well he has done there. maybe it is worth the risk but at what price. we cant spare many players though

Koumas is a quality player who can play in the Prem without a doubt! Good signing for us to push us up the table a little further.

Loans for the fringe players is always a good thing for their development as long as we have a call back clause in case of injuries!! Gary Cahill is the perfect example - MON will not pick him over laursen or Mellberg, but you can almost guarantee Laursen limping off at some point!!

He's a good player but not a very good player. I had hoped we only buy very good players this summer.

Koumas should only be brought in to bolster the squad, i cant beleive we are talikng of him as 1 of our 1st signings .Frustration at the lack of transfers is starting to creep in, perhaps the better players are too good for us and the likes of Koumas is all we can attract and as for letting Cahill and Osbourne move in the opposite direction, does this mean we will also be signing another centre half and midfielder?

I think that Koumas would be a decent signing. he's the kind of player who would be a menace in midfield. someone who would be a good substitution. he deserves a chance in midfield and a new challenge. If i was MON i would sign him.

Guys, get real, Villa don't have a chance at challenging top 4 next season, no matter who comes in, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and United will all be twice as strong as us (as usual) and so will Tottenham, Bolton, Portsmouth and the other European challengers. For our situation, Koumas is perfect, he'll add strength in depth in all midfield positions and gives Petrov and Gardner, Young, Barry and Maloney a kick up the arse to make them play better. We're all setting standards too high for this summer, we won't sign Sneijder, we won't sign Drenthe and we won't sign Forlan, so this transfer is actually believable.

Dizzy Mugs ... you said portsmouth will be twice as strong .. haha didnt they sign a chunk of our deadwood (mccann & samuel) .. also the thing is teams like the spurs ... they should already be in top 4 and they struggle i think they have a better team than liverpool .. but they have no heart .. i think mon will bring the hunger back as last season we displayed signs of it ... im not saying we will finish top 4 but we will defintly challenge top 4 and make them work as hard as they ever had to steal even a point for us, i think next season alot of people wil be very very very suprised with what we do

I think he would be a good signing. A lot of people seem to be moaning about the calibre of player we are being linked with, but lets face it, we are not in Europe and thats where the top players want to play. The lure of working with MON and for progressive club can only go so far, its that all important European competiton and challenging for the title is what most players want.

I think he would do a good job, we lack guile and creativity and he has that in sack loads.

Just because he is coming from a Championship club doesn't mean anything. Where were Bent, Cahill, Johnson, even our own Ashley Young a couple of sesasons ago.

Speculate to accumalate........... i'd also go for Nugent as well!

i have just started reading an article sayin that MON is going to be completing a deal for reo-coker and koumas in a £12 million deal what a double deal that would be but i think we are desperate for a right back smilies/smiley.gif

Koumas! Probably the most realistic target i've read. I think he'd fit in well with our current players and add depth to the squad. A quality player for West Brom but the step up could prove difficult. I'd rate his chances of breaking into a regular first 11 before the likes of Osbourne and Gardner.

Roe-coker on the other hand would be the best signing possible at this time, Sneijder, Drenthe, Forlan, alves and so on would be great for us but they would not come to us YET. We need to progress steadily but surely over the next 2 seasons to secure 5th/6th spot.

As well as signing a right back we need to sign another forward, Carew has his days but hasn't totally impressed, gabby isn't a 20 goals a season striker and Moore probably the best goal machine we've got missed a huge part of last year through injury, lets hope he stays fit. being linked with Nugent and harewood adds to my worries. There's no possible way we could get the likes of Bent, so why not go for a proven goalscorer unsettled at his club. I'm talking of YAKUBU, he'd be just what we need and if Nugent and harewood are worth around 5m payin 10m for the Yak would be a bargin.

What do you think?
