Martin O'Neill in for Marlon Harewood?

The Daily Star are reporting today that Villa are in a head to head battle with Birmingham City for the signature of West Ham striker Homer, otherwise known as Marlon Harewood.

According to reports Birmingham City had a £3mn. bid turned down last week and are expected to be making an improved offer this week. The question everyone will be asking today is if he is good enough and if that is where we've set the bar?

Now, it's not for me to say but if you played professional football and had Aston Villa or Birmingham City to pick from, unless your entire family were Birmingham City supporters and it was the dying wish of your favourite grand parent, you'd fully expect any professional player to pick Aston Villa.

I don't even know how to compare the two choices. For me it would be like having to pick between going out for a few beers with my mates, knowing I would have a great night, meet a beautiful woman who then introduced me to her best friend and we all left to go back to her place, that she teasingly referred to as 'the dungeon' or staying in for a colostomy. It's a no brainer. Let's just hope Liam Ridgewell doesn't like staying in.

Anyway, if you didn't know already, the nickname of Homer for Marlon Harewood comes from The Fiver. I just didn't want any of you thinking it was all little old me.

Would you have Marlon Harewood at Villa Park? He's scored 47 goals in 142 matches for West Ham; that's a goal every three games. Let us know below.

Only if he was the last signing of the transfer window. I expect our first signing to signal our intent and ambition. I don’t think 'Homer' would convince the big names we are heading in the right direction!

not a complete wate of a player, but definately not someone who would start for us.

he would be bought for backup i presume? yet i think luke moore is a better back up than harewood so i dont really think it would be worthwhile

He looks and plays like a grunt. Dont like him. We want classy players, not physical ones. Carew takes care of that part.

Good goal rate but i haven't seen much talent in him for quite a few years.
Then again, MON and John Robertson are reknowned for making mediocre players into top quality. With Sneijder out of the question, Babel off to a Champions League club and Drenthe going to a bigger club as well, it's down to NRC and Marlon for now.

Good signing as a backup to carew, it would be perfect. He'd be happy to play second-fiddle and he would add to the depth of the squad - direct replacement for sutton.

No thanks!

He was a one season wonder at West Ham and if Birmingham are after him let's do ourselves a favour and let them have him!!

It is also possible that players sign for smaller clubs because they feel they have a better chance of playing first team football, or is Aston Villa so fantastic that players would sit on the bench (if they can make it) rather than get out and play, just because they're employed by Aston Villa? Kightly of Wolves was cited by both Aston Villa and Manchester Utd, but signed for Wolves. Why? work it out, you're the clever one (apparently)

Apparently we are going 'Head to Head' with Blues over this one

Hmmmmm....who would you choose !!!

Now I know people will disagree, but the strikers we have in abundance are the little nippy ones, the only big bastard is Carew. If Carew gets injured we have no back up at all for him

Now for 3 Million, I think Harewood would be OK back up for Carew, not the best by any means but he is a better player then people give him credit for

His scoring record at West Ham is 1 in 3, which is the same as Carew at most clubs

remember we need to build a squad rather then just a fantastic first team

anyone agree with me, I expect not smilies/grin.gif

I suppose he'd be so-so possibly as back-up. We do have a few slighter, fast attackers (Gabby Moore Young Maloney) but only really Carew who's big and powerful. (still don't know what's going on with Sutton!?) So he would give us more of a physical presence up front when used, but he's not a player to get you really excited is he?

harewood scores 1 in 3 in the championship!

in the premiership its more like 1 in 4 to 1 in 5

1 in 20 for forest in the premiership
16 in 40 for west ham the other season
and 4 in 30 last season

16 of his goals coming in one season the other 5 goals in the other 60 games is not great. west ham want near 5 million! they must be having a laugh. david nugent is available for 5 million, roysten drenth is available at under 4 million and can play anywhere on the left. much better alternatives put there

AVFC signing Marlon Harewood, give me a bucket. The only possible value he could have is backup and i think we are pretty much covered in that department if we sign a proven top class striker. Id be very disappointed if villa sign him.

I was chuffed when I heard 'Homer' might be on his way to blues.
Now I'm just depressed.
MON has always got the best out of players but this might be pushing it a bit too far.

Having Harewood as a sub would strengthen the team---not tremendously, but he would add needed depth. That said, I hope that we have the 5 million going elsewhere this summer. Harewood should be an option only if our more ambitious signings don't materialize (i.e.: if our more ambitious signings sign for bigger clubs).

3 million??? not a chance, mind you bent at 18 million, do you think hes better than tevez? i dont and wham nearly went down with him in the team! Press will link all wham players to any club whos buying and all at inflated prices (london based team, london based press) O Niel is no muppet and harewood will go to a championship club on loan prob charlton, or around £1million

I think that we all need to take stock. We're getting a bit above ourselves aren't we? We're not Chelsea, we're not Man U and we're not Arsebal or even Spurs or Newcastle. We're a mid table outfit at best at the moment and I seem to rememeber that the likes of David Dunn, Mario Melchiot and yes Emile Heskey all chose the scum over us not too short a time ago. The very fact that we're even in for Marlon Harewood shows that we haven't reached the heady heights of the 80s yet. We're in danger of getting arrogant with nothing to be arrogant about. We've done nothing yet - just got a new owner who gave me a free scarf with a sh*t slogan on it. I'll be doing my crowing as and when we do something and as and when we're not linked with the likes of Harewood and we're signing Ronaldino. The arrogant writings of internet warriors is what gives people so much ammunition to fire at us for being big headed about winning absolutely FA in how many yrs? but apparently we're massive???
