Every now and then we run a quick question to get an idea on what Aston Villa fans really think and yesterday we went quick question mad with two of them.
It all started when the official site started the day with a few quotes from Dennis Mortimer on why there should be a star in the new 'badge'.
Now on the official web site they use the word crest but Dennis Mortimer uses the word badge and that small, nothing thing, topped me over the edge. It isn't and never has been a crest and the star will be embarrassing, if there really is one.
First, I think putting a star to represent the European Cup win in the new badge is wrong. What happens when we play in Europe and you don't see Manchester United, Liverpool or Nottingham Forest doing it. But I thought maybe I was all alone in thinking this as the official web site say they had 80% of people say they wanted it.
We all know that anyone could register for this survey; we just don't know if they actually support Aston Villa!
Now, the other quick question asked if it should it be called a badge or a crest because I was getting a bit fed up with the official web site calling it a crest when in fact it is a badge. The results were unsurprising.
Now before I give you the exact answers there are a couple of things that I'd like to say. Dennis Mortimer said yesterday that he'd only like a star for the European Cup, as it's the biggest thing in football after the World Cup. I disagree with this, as does Aston Villa legend Ian Taylor talking on the official web site last week.
Why don't Aston Villa petition the Premiership about been allowed to display a star for each time a club has won the league title? Or even do it like the do it in Italy or Spain; for every ten titles you get to put one star above the badge? Sure we'd have to win a few more but it's an incentive and fitting.
As for the star in the badge to represent the European Cup win, it's going to look a little strange when we are actually playing in Europe and 77.6% of you when asked agreed.
Wear the star with pride not as a gimmick. When we play in Europe again we can have it legitimately.
In reference to the badge or crest debate; 66.7% of you said badge while 25% didn't care. Only 8.3% said crest!
Now; it ultimately doesn't matter what we really think as one man owns Aston Villa and despite the spin and bluster we get told almost every one I've spoken to on the star in the badge debate agrees with me that it would be quite embarrassing.
That said, most of who I speak to believe that they can't release a new badge with a star in it or the rumoured 'AVFC' instead of 'Aston Villa' as everything they've done to date has been excellent' surely they can't be that short-sighted.
Well, we'll find out on Wednesday what it looks like and all the rumours; pretty much started by the club when releasing the badge survey results could have been all that spin and bluster that I spoke about above.

It could be worse, it could be 50 stars and a few stripes. ;)
I think there's going to rather a few upset fans come Wednesday...

Ian, I'm not actually fussed what the badge looks like and I'm actually not that fussed about AVFC instead of Aston Villa if I'm honest as that's all about brand development.
It's the star ... I want to wear the star on the shirt when we are playing in Europe, not when we're playing Doncaster in the League Cup. I want it above our badge as recognition; not in it.
With surveys and polls its how the questions are asked. If the question was asked slightly differently then the club would have got a different answer. It's because the Premier League don't allow the star above the badge that this is getting included in the badge ... almost as if we're looking at a way to bend the rules.
But, if the star does come out with the badge, it will all blow over in a few days and a few forum debates. There is a reason why Livepool, United and Forest haven't done it though ...
not everyone might like the idea of a star in the badge but if it does have a star we will get used to it
If you don't support the idea of a star being included in the crest, then you don't support the fact that we have won the champions league. Having a star on the crest is just the same as the clubs name engaved into the trophy. Its a mark of achivement, and we should cherish this achievement for winning the biggest domestic cup outside the world cup. being the best in europe is saying that you are the best in the world, and for me that is a huge achievement for the club!

We did win the european cup .. like you say; it's a fact.
i'd just like to see the star above the badge when we actually play in europe again ..
i guess what i think will be embarrassing is seeing two stars when we do actually play in europe. however, i've said somewhere else today that maybe the club will take the star out of the badge when we do play in europe ... then it ownt be so bad.
i just think 2 stars, when we do play in europe, won't be so hot ...
You can't really post this as the result of the vote, the vote was heavily skewed in favour of the answer that you wanted people to give which ultimately was no, because you personally don't want a star in the badge. If you wanted to publicise the results the question you should have asked was, "Do you want a star in the badge" with the options of 'Yes' and 'No' and not with the commentary that you put in after each of the options.

you are right, which was part of the point.
ultimately, though it doesn't really matter. the star in the badge (if in fact there is one) will be fine ... also on reflection i guess if we are playing in europe i think maybe the club might move the star to it's rightful place which will be above the badge ... and that is really my view. where is the rightful place to have it; it's not the right place to have one in the badge as the other three teams don't have it there so it's significance is less as it's only really villa fans that will know ..
i support the team not the badge, as long as we play well. i dont see the problem, but as of everyone who is nocking it before they see it,
il wait untill the wednesday's blogs when ur saying how good u think it looks
benny,
i'm 100% convinced it will look good ;D
and like i've said 174 times, i don't care what it looks like; round, triangle on bed of roses ...
and we really don't know what they're going to do with this 'apparent star' - it could be that it moves for european games to above the badge ... which i think it must do if thats what it represents .. anyway. until wednesday
The official club poll had 4500 responses with approximately 80% in favour of the star. Your poll had 49 responses. Another Villa web site had 48 responses to their poll with 83% in favour of the star. With all due respect, I put considerably more weight on the official poll and its very large sampling than I do on yours...and the results of yours do seem to be the odd one out. For as long as I can remember, we have all been bemoaning the fact that the club has not properly paid tribute to our 1982 win. Now that that is being done and we have an owner who is investing in both the team and infrastructure of the club, listening to the supporters, respecting our history and tradition and moving us forward in a sensible and positive manner...you complain about the use of the word 'crest'??? I couldn't care less whether the official web site calls it a crest, bagde, patch or logo...the point is we have more to be happy about now than ever in our past 25 years and you're nit-picking over symantics???

stop bloody moanin! why do you care what the shirt or the "badge or crest" looks like. its about the team, not its appearance, i wouldnt care if the badge was of steve bruce as long as vila made it into europe season in season out. we need to stop being so negative and realise that at least now the chairman is listening to what we want and not only that but doing it as well! so do us all a favour and shut up and stop writing such pointless picky articles unless you have somethin positive to say! Hi everyone, I am a villa fan from Hong Kong. Here is the logo posted in one of the forums in Hong Kong. They said that it is the new badge next year. but i dont know whether it is true

Past glories are great, and history is important. What I want is 11 men willing to die for that crest/badge/logo/shield.It matters not what's on the shirt it who's in it. Lets not forget Aston Villa is a Football Club not a brand - what's important is the football. Here's looking forward to 07/08 the 'bright future' begins!

just over 5% of the people that read the article voted in the poll and we had the poll running for less than a day, mainly on a sunday. we were never going to get more than a few votes but its done to prove a point; nothing else ...

why do i care? why do you care enough to post a comment? i care because it would be embarrassing ... embarrassing to me and generally the club; IF there was a star in the new badge ...
if it doesn't embarrass you, it doesn't but it does me and i'm the one posting this. if you have something to post; send it in!
