Star in new badge to be unveiled next week?

It looks like there will be a star on the new badge which will be unveiled next Wednesday as the official website is talking about it to former Villa captain Dennis Mortimer. I for one think having a star on the new badge is an embarrassing mistake and it feels desperate.

I'm all for the new mantra; 'proud history bright future', but surely putting a star into the new badge to represent a European Cup win that happened 25 years ago is clutching at straws.

You don't see Manchester United, Liverpool or even Nottingham Forest doing it!

What happens when we play in Europe and we can legitimately put the star on the shirt above the badge? It's going to look fairly stupid having a star in the badge and then one on top.

Now, I'm not knocking anyone here but on one of the threads on one of the forums someone at the club is even defending the star saying it doesn't necessarily have to represent the European Cup win but could be 'where we are going'.

Well; it's either for the European Cup win or not and people at the club shouldn't be saying it represents the future when we were led to believe it was quite specifically for the European Cup win. It looks like to me that they know they've made a mistake and are now trying to back track.

But, the question was asked and it was asked on the internet. Another reason why this isn't a good idea is because how do the club know that the 4,500 people that responded are Aston Villa fans? If Birmingham City had a questionnaire that I could register and answer I would; why wouldn't they do it for one of ours.

The star is not allowed to be shown above the badge in a Premiership match it can only be displayed in European competition. Incorporating it into the badge just doesn't feel right to me which is why I've set up the quick question to the right.

I hope we make Europe next season, maybe even this season if Spurs get in and we get in because of fair play, but if this new badge has a star in it I've got a feeling we might be in for some stick.

Lastly; call it what you want people but to me it will always be a badge, not a crest. If we let them start changing names now on the small things soon they'll want to be changing the names to some of the bigger things.

Added about five hours after initial post: The more I think about this the more I'm convinced the new board are not going to have allowed this to happen.

I can't for a second believe an embarrassing mistake of this magnitude would have landed on the desk of so many people and not get noticed. A star in the badge to represent a win in Europe, then we play in Europe and have the real star above it. We'll see on Wednesday.

Star or no star, you'll still support Villa no matter what. You can't really make judgement on the new badge until you've seen it. Some will like it and others will hate it.

Some people will just never be satisfied no matter what you do.

I'll wait until I see it. I'm excited about the new badge/crest, star or not, as I was never a fan of our current one when it came out.

By the way, on the vote, Villa are referred to as 'Aston Villa Soccer Club'. Has Randy's American influence started creeping in... ;)

The new badge must include a star, even though it was 25 years ago, it still happened and we still won the cup. you can't take that achievement away from anyone. I think this is a new dawn for the villa. we need to change our appearance to make villa a brand for a foreign market, you can't be a big club without large scale marketing.
