Juan for the road: Angel heading to New York Red Bulls

I can't believe I've written it but it's fitting, or atleast could be, if things turn out how they should. If reports are to be believed Juan Pablo Angel has signed for the New York Red Bulls.

The official site are not confirming anything, in fact they're going some way to confirming the rumours without actually confirming the move and Martin O'Neill has said he won't stand in the players way if he wants to move on.

If the very strong rumour is true then the player could have already left for the US if permission was given for him to join up with his new team and there may be no send off for the player, although it would be nice for him to get the last five minutes against Portsmouth this weekend.

There is a possible upside to the move; Aston Villa are on a pre-season tour of the US and part of the deal could be a match against the New York Red Bulls.

Another rumour, which if true confirms that Angel is off, is that there will be an announcement later this afternoon from Villa Park. If true I suspect it can only be about Angel and the club are confirming the deal; that or a new club sponsor for next season maybe?

I suspect Angel will be missed by most supporters, for a variety of reasons and I'm sure he'll be a star for the New York Red Bulls if the deal goes ahead as expected.

it would be best that angel left, for him and for the club. he's been an expensive mistake, but i'm sure he'll do ok in the not so spectaculer american league.

I expect this to be the beginning of the end for many of the old guard. I can't see Sorensen, Hughes, McCann or Hendrie returning for pre-season training and I have an inkling that both Davis and Ridgewell might be less fortunate departures as well - both want regular first-team football I suspect.

Still, I've always liked Angel despite the dodgy and too infrequent celebrations and I wish him all the best the other side of the pond.
