Barry off to Spurs as part of a swap deal?
Written by Damian

First off it's only a rumour and I don't even know who the other player in the swap part is but we've all heard the names mentioned the past few weeks so you don't need to be a genius to figure it out.

Spurs wanted Barry in the summer and Barry is a Spurs fan, or at least was so it's not impossible. However, I suspect that for every Villa fan that says Barry can go you'll get at least another one that says he's our best player.

I'm personally not convinced with Barry. He's not playing tomorrow and he didn't play at Everton and somewhere else this season and I believe we won both those games.

Sure, he's got a nice left foot but he's slow so not an ideal left sided midfielder. He's also not a central midfielder despite what anyone wants to try and say to convince me and he's lost us points this season for as many as he's gained us.

It might just be best for him to move on as a player but also Aston Villa. A new manager has to sometimes get rid of players not because they're not good enough but because they are too much part of the club.

In other rumour news, Aston Villa are apparently interested in Chelsea winger Wright Phillips, according to the official web site. I'd like to see him at Villa but only time will tell. Signings have to happen quickly if they are to have an impact on the league season!

Personally Villa should be signing players not getting rid of them, and correct me if I'm wrong, isn't he your top scorer? (granted most were pens, but thats only because some of the misfits you have up front couldn't take them, step forward Angel).Look up and down the country and the left side is a major problem for most clubs. Spurs' biggest problem area is down it's left side, and to snare Barry would be a coup.Intrested to see who you would replace him with!

Sorry mate but this swap talk has been doing the rounds for a few weeks and honestly if we wanted Barry we could just have him! He's not good enough for Spurs anyway.

Barry is an Ok player,Looks good in a poor in quality but motivated and trained by fitness merchant MON team.

Surely will help Spurs in terms of making the team more balanced but in all honesty i would rather invest in a pacey, tricky Lennon/Duff like out and out winger.

If the idea is to get Barry as he is a Spurs fan and get a player who would wear the shirt with pride and also as a cover for Lee and Assou Ekotto on the left then yes he is worth getting hold of.

Spurs do not need the money and Players like Defoe/Keane dont come easily and cheaply so a swap talk is way off the mark.

Carrick is a good example of how a club should never sell his best player but instead give him an improved contract.

same mistake twice in a season? that will cost Martin Jol his job.

look barry should not leave villa right hes an amazing left back/midfield 8 goals, 4th highest goal scorer in the prem and just an amazing penulty taker "cough, cough"(should be playing for england)and plus barry is good enough for any team i think, because i mean all you spurs fans are saying oh yeah we dont need him hes not good enough, so why did you go after him in the summer? because hes a brilliant player thats why, he gets better and better every game and plus i think villa should buy robbie keane and darren bent.

The over-zealous focus on pace is blinding to many in these forums. Barry has got ok pace, but loads ofg skills in other departments.

Barry wouldnt be a bad signing for spurs, would play him at leftback though, still leaves us looking for a left winger, wouldnt touch downing, too much money for a good player but not a great player. Dont think Defoe or Keane would want to leave spurs for villa, dont think villa could afford either anyway. You`ll probably see the normal, villa will sell angel to a spanish club, angel will then go on and score goal after goal, villa will buy someone cut price like james beattie and they wont improve. a great manager can only do so much.

Gareth Barry has been our best player all season without a doubt, even though he's been asked to play in differant positions.
There is no way that Martin O'Neill will let him go for anybody in part exchange, no matter who it is.
When the squad at Villa is bigger, and more settled, Barry will be in his best midfield role, and we will see even more from him.
Forgot to mention, he's our top scorer this season, without his goals we'd be well down the league.

Villa is not going to sell Barry; he is our best player and team captain. Wright-Phillips would be a spectacular signing as we need a goal scorer; I hope you are right about that one.

up the villa!

I'd love Barry to come to Spurs, i'm a season ticket holder, and have been to villa away games, and everytime I've been impressed by him. In a pretty average side he stands out week after week as a cut above, he'll fot right in with the other topquality spurs players, and we'd finally have a leader on the pitch which we've been lacking since the Steffen Freund era!! You can have Davenport...he's distinctly average so you guys should love him!

To compare Villa and Spurs doesn't seem fair, taken into consideration the money each team has spent within the past 2-3 years. If Martin Jol wants to buy a player its not an issue where as Doug Ellis didn't want to spend the money. This season is the first in a long time where the team has a quality manager to select new signings and a substantial transfer fund. Also when a left back is your top scorer, it emphasises a problem with the strikers.2 quality strikers 1 Defender and 1 midfielder would make a substantial difference at Villa.Just look at difference Harry Rednapp has made at Pourtsmouth with smart summer signings,Relegation contenders to Champions leauge contenders.

.. would we sell our captain and most consistent player halfway through the season, especially now we are in a 'make or break' position, also selling Gareth we would lose not only a captain, but and excellent fullback, a gutsy winger, and also a make shift central midfielder/centre back.. did i forget to mention the guy who takes all the corners!? he may not be the quickest but who else at the club has his touch, close control and intelligent play, when was the last time youve seen him get isolated? not to mention the numerous times hes played himself out of trouble.. how many games has he played for us? he'd never go to spurs, hes on the verge of becoming a villa legend!

Rumor I heard was a Barry for Keane swap...Spurs are keen to move a striker and obtain an attacking midfielder...makes sense in that respect. They'd have to make the money work, since Barry is obviously not of equal value to Robbie.

Whoever mentioned Aaron Lennon or Jermain Defoe...wake up, you're dreaming. This is clearly wishful and/or drug-induced thinking.

Lastly, to the person criticizing Spurs for letting Carrick go...ummm, 18 million pounds is a boatload of money AND Tom Huddlestone is doing quite nicely these days, thank you very much.

No doubt, Gareth Barry is a quality player and would be a good addition to our squad, however I don't think he is the missing link to our lwft side problem, I think we need as someone else has said, another Lennon type skilful player, we have plenty of workmanlike mid field players. Besides I think Villa would be mad to let him go, O'Neill isn't stupid and must realise if he is to improve the side he must hold on to his best players of which Barry is one. Villa played pretty well against us the other day, I'm sure we are not far away from being a top side, but definitly need one or two additions in the window. COYS

First of all he is injuried that's why he isn't playing. He is an amazing player ffs, for the first 15 games he in 1st position overall ranking in the premiership the site that adds up all the stats and takes away the fouls cards etc, And i wouldn't swap hiom for any Spurs player.

You hear YIDS say oh not Barry he is rubbish and isnt half the player of any of our current players. How much would it cost us to replace him how many points would it cost us to lose him. I think his the best Left back/left Midfielder in the country Joe Cole is right footed ffs. If you told me a swap deal for King, Defoe, Keane, Lennon, Robinson i wouldnt be happy. There's no doubt about it he is world class he should be in the England Squad. But "Ginger Sven" can't find the Midlands.

Players we should be after, SWP, C.Davies, Defoe, Nugent and my god McCann needs replacing, we need a player like Gravesen but younger and faster.

Gareth Barry is a quality player, i'd love him at Spurs, but barring him putting in a request to leave (I never knew he is allegedly a Spurs fan) I fail to see why O'Neil would let him leave, sure he hasnt great pace but is clearly Villa's best player, driving force when chips are down and a goal threat.

O'Neil is a manager with a great rep for a reason and surely he's seen the same as almost anyone who goes to Villa.

As far as calibre of players, trying to be unbiased as a Spurs fan but Barry is the only one I think would make the Spurs squad (on ability and need to fill a left position). Not meaning to offend but Villa's time under Ellis leaves you where we were under Sugar and its going to take time to re-emerge. At least you have the fundamentals in place now.
