Another one for Doc Bowles: Matthew Upson

I know Doc doesn't like the speculation but sometimes it's worth mentioning it just to judge what the press and other websites are thinking about your club at this moment in time.

While O'Leary was in charge every player we were linked with was also linked with Everton and usually one or more of Newcastle, Fulham, Blackburn and Bolton.

Today it's Matthew Upson, the bluenose defender. He's a good defender and not really a bluenose so I wouldn't hold it against him if he did join us. But as usual, it's only speculation and I'll believe it when I see it.

I wouldn't mind him at Villa if he kept the other two battling for their place. With Mellberg at right-back here and there and Laursen injured and pron to further recurrence I'd rather see us covered. The guy learnt his trade at Arsenal and Liverpool have been credited with an interest so he's got to be good. Saying that, he still didn't stop them going down and is injury prone himself...

i would hate to see us rush out and buy another central defender with Ridge, Mellberg, Cahill, and Laursen doing so well. Laursen will be back after Xmas, I think we could leave it until the summer. Definately a right back though - I wonder if we could attract Micah Richards or Lucas Neill??????????????
