Marlon

Hi to all you claret n blues (wrong ones but hey ho!!). Many of us in the East End wish that Marlon hadn't left. Had a poor last season with us, but aside from Tevez, who didn't! He wasn't a whinger and always gave 110%. Im my opinion he was unlucky to miss out on the world cup as in the previous season he must have been close to being the top English striker in the premiership. Delighted he seems to be becoming something of a cult figure in the Midlands. Good on yer Marlon. Look at us now, Bellamy injured, Ashton a shadow of last season, Cole struggling and we're looking forward to Zamora coming back!! Dont even get started on Boa Morte (am I right in thinking Morte means "dead"?! (Certainly is from the neck down!). Marlon is a great lad, you did fine business there. - HammerForever

Madejski is a great big concrete morgue - any atmosphere got left behind when they moved from the old Elm Park. Spacious, but horrible. Prob won't have to go there again in the near future anyway.
Pity about that penalty for the goal diff. - alittlemonkeygoesalongway

Ultimately we need a right winger, keeping Young at left and a playmaking midfielder to have continued success in the future. Barry and Reo-Coker are not a 'combination'. Barry has a poor game (which he did vs Reading) Reo plays well. NRC is a ball winner no doubt, but he needs to work on his passing as he gives it away just as quickly. Barry needs a hard running midfielder who isnt afraid to go forward (as we saw when he teamed with Gerrard). I think theres definately room on the team for both, but not neccessarily at those positions. By the way, now that Spurs won the Carling Cup, is there a chance were going to miss out on euro like we did a few years ago when we finished 6th under O Leary? Its becoming obvious we REALLY need to do it this year.......... - Leroy

You always get some Blues bell end (Matthew Leedham) popping up with drivel (that means nonsense, bollocks - I feel the need to translate as most of your fans are like you Matthew, are total pillocks). After a couple of draws they think they can push for Europe, on Sunday April 20th we'll have a good look at your prospects as you pick the ball out of the net on multiple occasions at Villa Park, and with a cracking goal difference of -13 and a tally of 23 points from 27 games, i'd concentrate on staying up. I fancy the Blues to join Derby in the championship next season, that is unless Martin Taylor continues tackling in the same manner that he bundled down Eduardo on Saturday, if you can't beat em, kick em off the park eh Matthew… Get on the Newcastle message board where you can join an equally disillusioned set of supporters, the only difference being they will stay up to fight another premiership season. - Jimmy Villain

UEFA Cup Qualification
Places in the UEFA Cup are generally awarded to competition cup winners and teams who finish in various runners-up places in the top leagues of Europe. There may be more or less teams from any given country depending on team successes.

Qualification of both UEFA competitions is fairly complicated, with different methods of qualification depending on the standing of the winner and domestic cup competition regards the runner up. An example of qualification for an English team could be the winners of the League Cup and FA Cup qualifying, as well as the team finishing 5th in the Premiership.

The FA Cup winner may not automatically qualify for the Champions League, owing to its league position, but if it does, the FA Cup runner-up goes to the UEFA Cup; however, the League Cup runner-up will not. Furthermore, if the League Cup winners have qualified for European play, either by league position or through the FA Cup, then 6th and 7th Premiership teams may enter, to boot.

Unlike the world cup, the previous winners of the UEFA Cup do not necessarily have automatic qualification for the current UEFA Cup or UEFA Champions League, although they may be admitted at the request of the club association.

Im as shocked with harewood's emergence as everyone else. Hopefully between them (Hare, Gabi and Carew) we can score a lot of goals. I know its out of reach for this season but theres no reason why they cant get around 40 between them next season. The defence chip in well, all we need is a few more from midfield and we really could challenge for the top 4 next season.

Does anyone know what happens now spurs won the league cup...where we have to finish for Champions Leagur/UEFA/inter toto etc? - villain

I dont think anyone predicted Harewood would have this impact. I said when we first signed him that any player is useful but I did say I felt we overpaid for him considering Santa Cruz was about the same price. But I dont think anyone on here can honestly say they werent really angry at his signing after the Spurs game. No one said anything good about him then but he has proved us all wrong. Well done to Marlon. - the_flabster

Dizzy Mugs, couldn't agree more. Carson worries the hell out of me, he seems to do the very simple things with a great degree of uncertainty which really doesn't breed confidence through the rest of the team. He's made a few decent point blank saves, but so often he spills the ball, or just parries the ball out into the box. I can't help but think that MON has noted this, and is on the lookout for someone with a bit more certainty about his keeping, hence why we've not heard anything about a permanent move. I know everyone wants him to do well, and do it at Villa, but if we're having to pay in the region of £10mil, i'd sooner have someone else. - Robbie

I wouldn't pay 9m for Carson. He is too slow to get across to shots and postional play lets him down. He looks totally gormless in games to me and he doesn't feel me with alot of onfidence. As for Gardner I don't think he is good enough for were we want to be-way too slow in an area that needs pace and his touch is poor as is his positioning. A bit morequality and we would be a very decent side. - beer_belly

Agree with most that has been said, however I believe Carson will come good in the long run as he has proved to be a good shot stopper. Can I just add that I thought our support on Sunday was wonderful....again. Keep the faith. - villadaz

Young, Carew and Gabby were villas best players by miles!! Carson as aluded to on another thread was very poor and Gardners lack of pace and positioning were shown up a few times (not questioning his effort though).
Interpreting some of O'Neills comments regarding his sales in the transfer window - I do wonder if we will ever have a big squad?? because he likes to operate with a settled side and thus he cant keep everyone happy.

Carson 7? For me, he looked very uncomfortable in goal, and also lacked the concentration we've seem him lacking most of the season. A 5 rating from me. Everyone else i agree with. - Dizzy Mugs

My comments from that very post on The Hare:
Guys, I know I was quick to slag this signing off but take a look at his goals on YOUTUBE, a lot of which are first touches and snapshots! I'm not saying he's Gary Lineker but it's a different option at the end of the day... and we have been short on those for years!
Yes I slagged the pants off him on another post when he first signed (through shock more than anything!) but he continues to prove all the doubters wrong... To be fair it could be Ronald McDonald wearing our number 9 for all I care as long as he put the same effort, commitment, energy and strength in as Marlon has! He looks like he wants the scrap every time he comes onto the pitch!

He has certainly done himself no harm in these latest performances, keep it up son! - Woodinho
