My grandfather also lived in Endicott Road three streets away from Villa Park, as did I until 1963 when I left as a three year old. My grandfather told me of one of Pongo's party pieces which was to juggle the ball then volley clean over the stand. No way of knowing if my grandad was rembering clearly after all the years 1 - martin hill

I took my dad to Villa Park the year before he died in 2001 and he talked to me of Pongo Waring. My dad was born in Endicott Road - three roads from the Villa ground - in 1921 and he said that Pongo lodged in the road when he was a boy and that he used to 'run errands' for him. My father explained that, in those days, players didn't earn very much money which was why he was lodging in the two ups-two downs. Can anybody verify this? I'd love to find out more. - Elaine Fields

Hi I am researching Billy Walker and know he was born in1897 in Wednesbury and died 1964 in Sheffield but cannot find evidence of a death certificate. Does anyone have literature on him or can point me in the right direction. I would be very greatful I am a distant relative of his, - Vincent Thompson

What I would give to see Pongo and Billy Walker in their prime together. My old man did and says they were the best he ever saw.
PS He also there when Drake scored 7. Why didn't he score 8? He only touched the ball 7 times! - salty

An eighty eight year old friend of mine reckons Pongo was the best striker we've ever had. He goes all misty eyed when talking about him, says he was better than they say, when asked if he was as good as they say.

Doesn't he still hold the record for the fastest every Villa goal? Something like 9 seconds from kick-off? - PaulE

Great article! As a wee tot back in the early 70s I was taken by my grandfather to a Villa All Stars match and Pongo - well into his 60s then I guess - made a brief appearance. Can't remember much about it...only that my grandad was overawed to see his all-time Villa hero in the flesh and that I made an embarassed getaway, autograph book in hand, from the shed-come-changing room when I copped a view of naked Pongo readying himself for the shower! - pongogidman
