just heard around tallaght, here in Dublin, that robbie keane is suffering a lot under ramos new regime at spurs. Reckon a cool 10 mill wud entice keano, used to combine brilliantly with quinn for the republic, big Johnny Carew knockin balls down to him, magic!! no chance of getting hoyte, wenger wont cut the apron strings!!. From what I see, noone is giving Kevin Doyle any credit. Doyle said in Irish papers today that he didn't intend to ever stay at a club like reading and I reckon we should get in there before he rots on the bench at Chelsea, a cool finisher and no one at reading puts in more effort. - headdball

Northern Villan - Not one person has mentioned Messi, Ronaldinho or Kaka, and I doubt any Villa fan is expecting that. The 'biggest' player anyone has mentioned is Bosingwa, and that's only because of the ridiculous price tag Porto have put on him. This Villa side just needs an extra bit of quality and experience and hopefully that will bring a little more consistency. There are plenty of top players that would consider a move to Aston Villa, probably not from the bigger clubs but certainly anything below, whether that be from a team within the Premiership or from a foreign club. - Az_

The 5 year plan probably consists of selling Villa to other players for at least 3 of them! Haha. Im happy to make Europe this year for the extra games we get. What annoys me is people carrying on about whos the biggest and best Villa fan. Randy is the biggest fan, because hes the one with all the cash falling out of his pockets! - Leroy

Foreigners don't always adapt, it's a calculated risk you need to take, a gamble usually afforded by teams daring to win something. Bergkamp was a donkey at Inter Milan then became a top player at Arsenal. Davids flopped at Milan then played well at Juventus. Tomasson was a disaster at Newcastle then progressed to better things at Feyenoord (won Uefa Cup) and AC Milan (Champions League). Spot a pattern yet? All of the above ended up moving from a big club to another. Where did Balaban end up after Villa? At Club Bruges. I remember the odd comment made about the croatian, I don't however recall Barcelona and Manchester Utd challenging us for him otherwise like hell Doug Ellis was gonna get him. And now back to the "not big enough for certain players" chestnut. Let's use 1 example above all: Atletico Madrid. They were relegated in 2000 and spent 2 seasons struggling in the Spanish second division. This season they finally managed to qualify for the Uefa Cup for the 1st time since 2000. Hardly giants at present, are they? I knew you were going to pick on the 1996 Wikipedia comment, it was the flawed bit I wanted you to comment on and right on cue you did. Now, let's have a look at the Atletico Madrid squad: Maniche, Abbiati, Reyes, Forlan, Motta, Luis Garcia, Maxi Rodriguez, Simao. Not a bad line up for a club hardly able to display a history of glory over the past few years, is it? Plenty of flair, passing ability, firing power and ability. Flair we have a little in Maloney, Young
and Petrov at the Villa, firing power comes through Agbonlahor and Carew. And that's it. The rest are good players or promising youngsters. What we need now is to complement them with established European performers. Defoe would be welcomed, don't get me wrong, although I'd question his motivations as he is being forced out and seems far from happy to leave the bright lights (and the sh*t traffic, and the smog, and the stabbings) of London. Chimbonda is ok but I have serious doubts on his overall quality, I watched him carefully last night again and his passing can often let him down, he was caught out of position on a number of occasions and his attitude is also questionable. I doubt Bentley would come and besides, we are already wasting some of Young's potential by playing him on the left so why not look for a left sided winger instead and allow the ex-Watford winger to finally do his stuff on the right? The Atletico Madrid example stands as testament that - if you have ambition - it doesn't matter about recent history. Let's put the "not ready to challenge for big names yet" theory to bed once and for all, lads. - Michael P

however, iv got to agree with you one one thing Michael P, Kevin bloody doyle!? we do not need him and should be aiming much higher than that. id rather give a youngster a chance in the first team than spend £8m on someone that hasnt even had 2 years in the prem. - Villa_PeteD

"although most of these were won before the Second World War and the most recent was in 1996" This is exactly my point. we have no divine right today to automatically be challenging the at the top. We have to build a squad and a team capable, and we are doing that. At the moment we are 7th. With money spent in January on Bentley, defoe and chimbonda we will finish 6/7th. Then in the summer go out and invest in a couple of top quality players. We cant simply go out now and buy the best in the world, this isnt fantasy football or champ! And its interesting you mention balaban. he was the next big thing at the time and considered a real coup, just goes to show that buying abroad isnt the best option. sometimes its better to buy proven quality, someone that we know can cut it and score in the premiership i.e. defoe - Villa_PeteD

To a degree I understand your point PeteD. Years of Doug Ellis, Lee Hendrie, John Fashanu, Ian Ormondroyd, Garry Parker, Graham Taylor (during his "2nd coming"), Julian Joachim, Hadji and Kachloul, Balaban and the likes are enough to dumb anyone into mediocre expectations and into passive submission. May I remind you however that - and I quote Wikipedia - "Aston Villa is the fourth most successful club in English football history, having won 21 major honours, although most of these were won before the Second World War and the most recent was in 1996". We also are supposed to be backed by an American multimillionaire hell bent to bring back the glory days, we have a top ground, top training ground, a few good players, a decent manager (long balls aside) and a healthy league position. This alone should encourage someone at this club to get a move on and finally have the balls to bid for anything either than kids or Tottenham rejects. To top it all up, Villa happen to play in what is currently the most attractive - in terms of money at least - league in the world. I have heard the "let's get things done with common sense and timing" for 2 years now, since MON was appointed and Lerner took control, and in my book it would be time to attempt to step up 2 or 3 gears and show real ambition. There is also the fact that Mr Lerner took over a club in good nick with regards to finances, something that cannot be said for example for Man City with Shinawatra or Chelsea with Abramovich, which means he didn't have to bail us out in terms of debts and as a result should have left him with enough cash to make the odd silly bid for players worth the money. As Damian said, it is all about selling the club. If you are going to move forward at the speed of Miss Daisy then players will not come regardless of glorious 5 year plans or shiny training grounds. If you - however - display the ambition to step up a few levels and go for it, there's a very good chance top names will take notice. As we are now, in a good league position and with something to build on, we should attempt to sell the club and add to what we have so that we can remain in the top 6/7 and hopefully qualify for Europe. If we instead decide to buy Barnes, Doyle and the likes, chances are we will continue to be praised for nurturing British talent after finishing 8th or 9th and - once again - have little else to cheer about. We have enough kids to please Gary Glitter for a lifetime, we have had enough donkeys to rival Spain's outbacks, I dare to say it would be time to inject some momentum to this eternally futuristic vision of a winning Aston Villa.

When managers take over other clubs, there is always going to be players sold, simple as! are you telling me when fulham bought Davis of us in the summer that he was one of our rejects! No chance, he just simply was'nt Oneill's type of player, when O'Leary was in charge and Davis was playing week in week out he looked one of the most promising youngsters in the premiership. We need to be realistic, being linked with Queresma is great but if you could choose the bright lights of London or the scenery of Madrid or Milan youre not going to want to go and live in Birmingham are you! these are all factors that effect a players desiscion when they move clubs, as you would if you went for a job in another country or city. I am glad MON has not gone out and spent 15 million on a striker from italy or spain, I would rather him buy a player that I have seen can actually play in this league, ie defoe, chimbonda. look at what Houllier did at liverpool, Ok he won a few trophies, but he spent over 100 million on pure sh*te, do you want O'Neill to do that, is it worth the gamble and bankrupt the club? instead why don't we show our support and get to the ground and watch the Villa instead of the 33 thousand that were there on saturday and show some support to our team and get back into europe! - Northern Villan

taglor, you need a reality check. im being realistic, not saying we shouldnt go after good players. you surely couldnt be unhappy if we went out and signed chimbonda, defoe, bentley. maybe even diarra too? they are quality players and would help cement a european place. then once we have got europe we can go out and sign a top draw left back and exciting CM, someone like a sneijder, van der vaart, etc. but those players just wont come yet. And yes, you do have to speculate to accumulate, but i dont see how £25m on a RB that was valued at £8-10m 4 months ago is a wise investment. - Villa_PeteD

Also at on the pee, I live on the coast and you expect me to go to all games and pay them to watch players that don't excite. And yes I'm sure you go to every single home and away game and have done forever and ever in your dreams. oh I just remembered I have been to every game they ever played and I also train with the team and I stay over at each of their houses every weekend and share a percentage of a wine bar with MON and part own an NHL team with Randy. blah blah blah - taglor

Thats brilliant Villa_PeteD, why aim for good players lets just all be happy paying millionaires to not use the money wisely. My spurs mate just called me, absolutely pissing himself that we may get 2 of their rejects, I'm sick of it, if MON buys some more crap then Iv'e had it with either him or the Billionaire Board, cause somethin ain't right. If Randy is a businessman surely other investments he has made he realises that you have to speculate to accumulate or maybe he doesn't know football as well as, on the pee, the John Motson of comments - taglor

Well said northern villain. These idiots who seem to think we will attract world class players at this time need to get a reality check. Whilst we have made massive improvements you have to build slowly. The quality of player we have signed has generally been an improvement, harewood and knight apart but I would be very pleaseed to get chimbonda and defoe. I would then add bentley and a quality left back and we would have a team to get us into europe. Then in the summer we could look at a couple of world class players to add to an improving squad. - DSB1

well said again that man (Michael P)

european football isn't an issue ... it's all about selling the club and the money - you've got to be able to sell it but you've also got to be able to pay the money and the salary ... it's all about 'where do we really want to be in another 3 seasons' - Damian

well said northern villa. weve gota be realistic. not point going for players we arent gona get. lets just get behind oneill. people criticise his signings (including me in terms of harewood and knight) but for someone that has supposedly made a lot of suspect signings, were not doing too bad. finished 16th with oleary, oneill now has us 7th. if thats what dodgy signings does ill have a few more please. - Villa_PeteD
