Excellent article - I look forward to the next . I too remember watching Charlie play many times. Particularly memorable were the lofted curling passes down the left wing, ocassionally goingout of play. It is also worth remembering how often Charlie moved up front. I think he might well have started a number of games as a makeshift inside forward in the late 1960s when the team found scoring difficult! Charlie's full back parther for 10 years from 1963 until 1973 was also an excellent player for the club, Micky Wright - any chance of him featuring as a Greatest Hero ? - DavidH

On a tangent, i think barry is going to start against croatia tomorrow but not because i think he should. i read on the villa website around 7 aclock this evening that Barry was looking forward to the Croatia game and that it will be the biggest game of his career. suggests that he thinks he will start but to support this, it mentions on the bbc website that mcclown is telling this players at 6 30 this evening who is playing tomorrow. i'm putting 2 and 2 together and probably getting 5 but do you think that barry knows he is going to start and thats why the comments on the villa website suggest he will.

any thoughts??? - Alex Taylor

I had the privilege of seeing Charlie play for the Villa on many occasions and i agree with much that has been said above. He did have chances to play for more successful teams but always remained with the Villa. A loyal servant and a very good player who should be remembered. - moocher

...never saw him play, I only remember the tail end of Saunder's villa career (the best bit!) but he was always ready to get rid of those who didn't fit into his plans. All the best managers are ruthless. - JR
