At Tone

you did well to name 1 but can you name another. i think you have set your sights too high on who you want to sign. name me the 8 players you would like to sign but remember these points

- No player will leave a team playing in a european competition to join a team that finished bototm half last season.

- We will not pay wages in excess of 45000 a week

- if you bring in 8 quality players does that mean we drop 8 players in the current starting 11. if so who do you drop??

if you can answer these with a sense of actuality and realism then why not apply for the job when MON gets sacked aroung november time? - Villarevolution

Its Idiots like Jeremy Peace, who put ridiculous price tags on unproven young british born talent who are going to be responsible for a Premiere League with NO British players! This is the exact reason that Wenger, Ferguson, Benitez, Redknapp and co always look abroad first. - merlin1

Bass2001 - my point wasn't sticking with the board and only signing quality like Marloooon as you put it; but supporting the club and wanting players to come and play for Aston Villa because they want to not because we pay them £70k per week like the smaller clubs i.e WestHam (Lucas Neill - obviously went there instead of Liverpool due to the level of football not the wages!!!)
I totally agree with the 3-5-2 system; with Carson, Mellberg-Laursen-Cahill, Moore-Gardner-NRC-Barry-Young, Carew-Gabby. Early last season we played some great football with Moore out wide, he is disciplined enough to get back and cover as a wing back should do and he can also pop wit a few goals; our performances dropped last year when we lost Laursen but we also lost Moore at a similar time which led to us not been to play the two wide boys. - BigAnd

The wing backs cant be players like gabby and young though need to be more defensive. gardener and barry would be perfect and would allow players like young, gabby berger, etc to have a more attacking role and also bring them closer together so they can interchange and run together. At mo they are isolated and someone up front gets the ball and they have to do it on their own, happens everytime. When we get the ball upfront people should be making runs off the ball. For years now our off the ball movement has been practically non-existant andf I believe that it is one of our biggest problems. - Adam L

no one seems to realise? (adam l) ive been saying on here for last 2 weeks that we should revert back to a 3-5-2 formation if you search some of the previous blogs i have noted a few times we should be a 3-5-2 i agree with you on that but y leave bouma out he 's been one of our top performers since last season! and at the start of this one etc..
carson -mellberg-laursen-bouma
gabby - nrc - gardner - barry - young
moore - maloney

a solid, determined, fast side
if we all out attack and give it a go y need defenders the best form of defence is attack lol! ;D - TON23

Im with you too Adam L. 3-5-2 could be good. To be honest im looking forward to seeing Craig Gardener have a good run in midfield. The guy is brilliant. All heart and enthusiasm and hes a topnotch footballer. Petrov at the moment is a waste of space- hopefully hell come good at some stage in the future but he should be dropped for the next game.
Have to disagree about the strikers- would love to see Moore, Maloney and Harewood (in particular) have a shot. Carew has played brutal the last two games and Agbonlahor in my opinion is a tad bit over rated. Plus im bitter that he didnt pass to Reo-Coker last week! Maybe Maloney on the right wing?

But for God's sake, i hope Martin signs at least three players before the deadline otherwise were gonna be talking about lads from the reserves/youth teams that most of us wont have even heard of come Christmas! - IrishVillaFan

No one seems to realise something pretty obvious, if you havent got a right back don't play one. Play 3-5-2 it would suit us too. Petrov isnt good enough at all he constantly marks space and gets lost, its like having 10 men he doesnt actually do anything and upfront we lack a cutting edge. How often do we create a good passing move with everyone linking up that should end up with a goal.Carew needs an out and out striker next to him as with the two playing off him isnt working in this formation. They either go to far up and leave us open down the flanks or too deep and theres no-one upfront. To me gabby is much better as a striker and young will become an excellant player but we need a couple of top players around 26-27 to help the inexperience if we want to progress. Lets pay over the odds for once and make a couple of big signings.pay them what they want and give everyone a boost.if you can entice one top player the rest will follow.

Id like to see the following on sat:
(3-5-2)carson -mellberg,laursen,cahill- gardener,young,reo coker,berger,barry - carew,agbonlahor
Subs: taylor, bouma, harewood, moore, maloney.

I think this would be solid and allow creative players to do their job.Any thoughts? - Adam L

to BIGAND we are not fickle, we just need a bit of depth to the squad so we might finish in the top 8! very noble of you sticking with the boards decision to only sign quality like marloooon but other clubs smaller in size to us but with greater ambition ie pompey have done alright and mr anelka might be on his way there so why can't we challenge in the market with them? - bass2001

Six English clubs watch Hangeland.

The Norwegian FA confirms that Tottenham, Bolton and Birmingham are coming to watch Hangeland and Norway play against Argentina in their friendly game at Ullevaal. According to the Norwegian newspaper VG Newcastle, Aston Villa and Manchester City will be there with scouts as well.

Newcastle has shown the most interest, but the Danes are not willing to let him go before their last Champions League qualification game against Benfica.

I agree with many of the comments posted above but would also like to add that these are the same people who were and will be again chanting MO'N names last season and again this season when we are doing well - i never rated O'Leary as a manager but he was right with his comments about our fans been Fickle!!
Yes we need more players i totally agree but would we all prefer he just buys for the sake of buying to keep you all happy or actually gets the right people in who want to play for Villa and have the same passion about the club as we all do?
£15m for Davies is ridiculous but even comparing him to Ridgwell (i'm sure those who metioned him were moaning everytime he was named on the teamsheet last year!) is pathetic; Davies will be Premiership class if given the chance; don't think he is a patch of Gary 'Pele' Cahill though. My main concern is right back; Gardner is doing a fine job for a midfielder but we really need him exactly there to replace Petrov or at least pressure Petrov to perform. There is a long list of players i would have liked to see down the Villa over the years but we are and always will be a Big club and we need to prove that from the stands as the twelth man to encourage not discourage the team - top players want European football and we all have to respect that; once we are there we can then spend big money and attract top players. Give MO'N the chance to take us there and support the cause not moan about it daily as many of you seem to do.

i find it quite funny so many people think aston villa will sign 4-8 players, i doubt it if we even sign 1 good quality player, the next few days there are international friendlys, which means no players will be willing to get into talks,10days left and we have signed 2 players, loaned one for a season, honestly its been the most depressing summer in terms of being a villa fan, i remember in june reading everyones expectations of new quality players, its all been a huge let down, at this rate we will be playing under 16 players at christmas >:( - stavenfaa

i don't see anything we have now is better than what we had last year so therefore i think we will finish in the same sort of position as we did last year. there are no players available that we can afford and would come to villa that would make us better so i am not holding my breath for anything interesting in the next couple of weeks. same old villa always boring!!!!! - bass2001

I cannot agree that we need 8 players. Yes many have gone but jjloyd, hendrie, angel, djembax2, ridgewell etc were not being used last season. We got some good replacements in at xmas plus we have 2 a loan this year and then gabby and gardner have come through. So i think 4 maybe 5 quality will see us to a strong squad - steve m

At Villa revolution
u say u agreee with mon tactics and have complete faith in him. One of his tactics was to have a bigger squad than last year as he put that as the reason for last seasons poor run. Unless we sign 8 players in 10 days we will have a smaller squad than last year. do you have faith that he will sign 8 players in 10 days and if he doesnt do u then mean u have faith in mon's tactics even tho he is actually failing in meeting them and his targets himself??
He also wanted all his players in initially before pre season. Again he failed in that tactic to give the squad a build up together. Lets face it he has failed to get a number of targets - swp, defoe and above all Craig gordon actually choosing sunderland above us when Oneil wanted him. To say he is a quality manager in the transfer market is a strange statment. I give u Petrov to start - 8 million for 1 maybe 2 good performances.
I know we have a solid basis of players at present but we need extra quality above that to start in the 1st team and oneil has failed in bringing that in. Our current squad is v weak in depth and will not finish top half unless a number of additions are made in the next 10 days. - tone

£15mn. for a Championship experienced player is waaaay out of line. Henry, one of the World's greatest ever players, cost £16mn. for christ sake. Their chairman is just pulling at very thin string to keep Davies at the club, although i think he knows Davies will never play for them, even if he stays! - Dizzy Mugs

this is what happens when fans expect signings straight away. villa were probably interested in davies and 8 mil was acceptable until another club heard and also became interested. therefore the price increases. MON is a top quality manager in the transfer market and WILL sign players. i agree with his tactics and have complete faith in him and who he signs when he does.

if anyone can tell me when MON as a manager has had a bad season due to him not signing enough players? and to name two bad signing he has made? i will sell my season ticket back to villa!!!

He believes in youth before untested foreigners. maloney is a quality player who MON broght through the celtic team as a youngster. Foreigners are not always the best option, look at veron(28mil), crespo, mutu, kezman, balaban, brolin. all world class players who cost too much and flopped. most of the best players in the premiership over the past 10 seasons have been young talent brought through.

JUST BELIEVE - Villarevolution

Do you realise that we have infact only spent 4m due to sales. So spending the money on Davies and Bosingwa wouldnt be that bad. Im running out of patience, each day I get home and straight on to teletxt or here in hope of a signing and as usual theres nothing.
Why havent we just payed stupid money for just one player so it will keep fans happy and they would of then kept up their promice of world class signings.
I read these columns every day and the comments each villa fan comes out with are full of fustration and I cant help feeling we are being taken for a ride.
I really hope im wrong but ive got this feeling after a summer of much promice, we are going to end up with a few last minute panic buys that wouldnt normally get into our reserves.
Please MON prove my comments wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - Wardy
